AM and FM DX

Good bandscan there!
Thanks for posting…

Here’s my thoughts on the gaps you’ve noted:

88.3 is a repeater in Camden, not Moss Vale
88.5 is probably 2RRR Ryde
90.9 Did it really have RDS?
91.6 Voice Of Islam (temp broadcast)
92.8 Probably a New Zealand station?
99.1 Another WSFM repeater - this time for Richmond/Windsor
101.1 Hot Country Nowra (same programming as 105.3 I think)
101.5 JJJ Canberra
102.1 JJJ Newcastle
107.7 2GO Gosford

I’ll help you fill in some of the blanks.

88.9 - Radio Skidrow (2RSR), Sydney CBD
89.1 - RBM FM (2BLU), Katoomba
89.7 - Eastside Radio (2RES), Waverley
90.5 - Alive 90.5, Baulkham Hills
92.1 - 2MFM, Sydney
92.3 - 2UUU, Shoalhaven Heads repeater
92.5 - Youth Radio, Southern Highlands
93.3 - Radio Five-0 Plus, Gosford
93.7 - Koori Radio, Sydney
94.5 - FBi Radio, Sydney
98.5 - 2OOO FM, Sydney
99.5 - Move FM, Katoomba repeater
100.1 - 2HHH, Hornsby or Life FM, Bathurst
100.3 - 2MCR, Campbelltown
100.5 - 2RPH, Kings Cross or Newcastle
100.9 - 2BCR, Bankstown
102.5 - 2MBS, Sydney
102.9 - 2ST, Bowral (although KO from Newcastle can come over it in ideal conditions)
103.5 - ABC South East, Batemans Bay
103.7 - Sky Sports Radio, Nowra
104.3 - Radio National, Orange or Power FM, Batemans Bay
104.7 - hit104.7, Canberra
105.1 - Radio National, Batemans Bay
105.7 - JJJ, Sydney
106.1 - ABC Classic FM, Newcastle
106.7 - 2ST, Ulladulla
107.3 - 2SER, Sydney (although Max FM from Taree can come over it in ideal conditions)

That would be the Voice of Islam, which is broadcasting during the month of Ramadan. On a not so good radio, it can cause adjacent-channel interference to 2ST 91.7 from Jervis Bay in the Illawarra region.

That could either be 2NSB, Chatswood or B-Rock, Bathurst.

If SouthCoastTV managed to receive all of the major commercial, ABC and community stations from Sydney then I’m a bit surprised that he didn’t get SBS Radio Sydney on 97.7FM!

Also, I wouldn’t expect it at this time of year but could Power FM from Bega possibly be received over Fine Music Sydney at Flagstaff Hill the conditions are right? In any case, it’s certainly a good bandscan from SouthCoast!

It is possible, since I have managed to receive Power FM from Bega on 102.5 at Windang back in January 2013. It’s also a good spot to receive the Batemans Bay FM stations, which is receivable pretty much all the time on a good radio.

@SouthCoastTV, another good DX spot to check out in the Illawarra is Hill 60 at Port Kembla, which is more elevated than Flagstaff Hill, and has a really good line-of-sight towards the south, as well as towards the north.

TV-Expert & Radiohead, thanks for identifying the stations which I did not list down in my original post! I really appreciate it.

Sorry, that was a mistake on my part. I was able to receive the station (also with RDS), however I accidentally left out the station in my original post.

Thanks for the tip TV-Expert. Coincidentally, I actually drove to Hill 60 earlier this afternoon (before I went to Flagstaff Hill), however I didn’t stay there for too long because of how bad the weather was at the time.

Admittedly, for the 88.3 WSFM frequency, I only went by what was listed on Wikipedia. I thought it seemed a bit suss that Moss Vale was listed as a repeater.

I believe Power FM Batemans Bay was the station that I was able to receive on the 104.3 frequency.

For future reference, I’d recommend looking at (& perhaps saving) this PDF file from ACMA, which lists all the FM stations across Australia in frequency order: http://www.acma.gov.au/~/media/Licence%20Issue%20and%20Allocation/Publication/pdf/TVRadio_Handbook_radio_4%20pdf.pdf

I did a bit of research and there is an adult contemporary radio station, known as More FM, which broadcasts on the 92.8 MHz frequency from the city of Nelson (on the South Island). The station appears to target the 25-44 age demographic. If that is indeed the case, it is very plausible that a “rock” song could have been playing on the station at the time.

I’m just waiting to receive that in Melbourne!

92.8 was almost certainly either an image of a local station or pirate/MP3 transmitter. Although E-skip can happen in winter, it’s extremely fleeting.

Had to go down to Morayfield this morning, while I was there I noticed that Triple J from Mt Nardi was booming in on 96.1, I didn’t get Zinc back until I passed Wild Horse Mountain on the Bruce heading back north.

I noticed some enhancement into Brisbane last week esp to the south. It disappeared on the weekend with the rain but seems to be back today.

Some enhanced reception into Brisbane today. From the north the Wide Bay signals are strong with even the Bundaberg commercial stations on 93.1 and 93.9 at listenable levels. Rockhampton on 103.1 also at good levels.

To the south Coffs Harbour and Mt Dowe ABCs are stronger than usual with RN on 100.7 over the top of Toowoomba station.

Hot FM Rockhampton coming in this morning on 107.9.

Seemed to be the makings of some tropo tonight but not sure if much has eventuated. Driving home I was getting adjacent channel interference on 99.4 from JJJ Wide Bay from as far south as Pimpama

Done a quick check, and there seems a minor boost from along the coast, so I’m not seeing much, but I dare say some of our more coastal members may be experiencing some enhancement

2GB 873 coming pretty good in Inner Melbourne.

Temporary transmission now on air in Brisbane (blank stereo carrier at moment) barely receivable at my place bu stronger the closer you get to CBD.

Located at RNA Showgrounds - so will expect programs to start wehen RNS Show does on Saturday.

Thanks!

Interesting choice of frequency (89.9)

Right between Radio TAB Beaudesert and Radio National Gold Coast.

I know there aren’t many spare frequencies around however.

There was a dance music station on 89.9 from the RNA grounds in May as well for a DJ festival - http://evmshowcase.com.au/.

The other frequency that had been used was 94.5 for River Fire one year when News Radio was only on that frequency in Gympie and Lismore.

I think I picked it up driving across the Riverside Expressway this evening (was just blank), but no sign of it here. Though I am pointing almost at 90 degrees to it with a horizontal antenna, so not doing myself any favours

A friend of mine claims that he was still able to receive 94.9 Power FM in his car about thirty minutes south of Newcastle earlier today. Although, I somehow find that hard to believe…
