Now I know why MWDX seems to go dead after 3am. Many of the SE Asian MW stations sign off for the night. 909khz seems to disappear around 1am, 783khz at 2am & 837khz at 3am. The two signals on 610 & 740khz also disappear at 3am.
Good on them for saving power. Many AM and FM Aus stations would do well to do the same, with nothing live on, only automation, why bother.
I can remember staying at Goondiwindi one night in the early 90ās, the next morning the translator for NOW FM was carrier only before 6am, might have been a technical fault or actual.
B Rock had technical fault with their automation, missed the starting pulse from 2MMM for The Nightshift, carrier only all night, Luke mentioned it on air, thought Caralis had booted him already.
Picking up 98.5 Apple FM Bacchus Marsh up in Bundoora Vic. Iām surprised given the distance.
agree with you wholeheartedly.
Everything is 24/7 these days, I think it would be a backward step to switch off overnight, you probably have shiftworkers still listening even if itās not live or local too.
Probably, it just seems a waste to me to not put to air anything of worth.
The way some stations are getting so tight, Iām surprised some havenāt tried it.
Given the Asian networks sign off despite millions of listeners (they have 100x our population after all), most Australian stations could sign off given prob only a handfull of listeners during the small wee hours. I donāt mean stations like Triple M but most if not all community stations & narrowcasters. Even commercial stations like 2XL would only have a small number of listeners overnight.

Good list!
What about Melbourne stations?
I canāt see them listed, or are you only listing the more distant ones?
Iām only trying to do long range stations that may be harder to catch than just Metropolitan Melbourne.
In the car last night, 2215 AEST, dawned me to try for Coast - AM 1359 - New Plymouth.
Instant success with 4WK Toowoomba consigned to history from AM.
0015 NZST there, still an upbeat Saturday night program playing party music fitting of the format.
Heard a song finish, quick sting ID for Coast and then a remix of the 80ās song beginning with Miami and a couple of piano keys, I forget its name, well known.
11Āŗc, clear weather and discernible reception despite proximity to a petrol station and far too many fast food outlets.
Likely better reception out on friendsā boat, but fishing duties to organise.
Hi guys
Dxing up at Cairns with dxer2_2000 lastnights MWDX highlights with the XHDATA + loop antenna. Most signals were booming & clear.
1170 & 1467 Korea
1458 & 1593 Taiwan
1107, 1053, 1134, 1179, 1386 Japan
1089, 1206, 1521 (Urumqi), 585 China (amongst others)
909 very strong with two Asian signals
1305 (back to back music), 1494 poss Philippines
1260 4MW strong with local prg & clear ID in english
585 Port Moresby very strong (now 24hr operation)
On the hire car radio (i30) we had Marshall Is 1098, Tonga 1017 & 1089 unid, poss KFBK 1530 from N.America. 1035 Solomons seems to be QRT
According to Online Radio Box, it could be āAnd The Beat Goes Onā by Whispers.
Iām picking up something on 1359 here up at Wedderburn. Not sure if itās Coast or 4WK. Itās just audible but it has its moments. It sounds like Footy or something atm.
Itās probably most likely RSN from Mildura.
Yeah that would be more like it. I can pick up most Mildura and Swan Hill stations from here clearly but this one is a bit choppy. Other than that 7SD and 3GG are coming up here stronger than yesterday.
Cairns? I didnāt think your allergy to heat allowed you to enter the tropics, even in mid-winter Very nice stuff, as weāve come to expect from you two
My DX report is somewhat more pedestrian. Driving home last night with another Geelong supporter in the car we wanted to keep tabs of the score (bad decision in hindsight). With local options limited I simply dialled up 774 and listened to the ABC broadcast. My passengers were somewhat surprised that they were able to clearly listen to footy broadcast from Melbourne while in a car north of Brisbane
I guess AM night skip can be of interest to even the non-nerd types, you just need the right way to demonstrate it
Nice one!
Donāt they have the AFL on 936 News Radio up there?
If your car had Bluetooth, audio streaming via an app could have been another option.
BTW - I FMDXāed in the Jet on the way up - was able to receive 104.7 Canberra around Narrabri. Also heard 103.5 2VM/t Collerenabri over SE QLD. Toowoomba could be heard up around Rockhampton. We also received 2XL/t 98.7 Perisher over Sydney (just after takeoff)
Wishful thinking I know, but it would be just magic if a fully fledged AM, FM RDS and DAB radio tuner was was available on every airplane seat (built into the back of the seat in front of you) connected to an antenna on the underside of the plane. I wouldnāt want my flight to end then!
