Al Jazeera

They still have the space at the shard.

Yeah, it’s still their London bureau (I think the space is shared with AJ Arabic?). They just don’t do bulletins from there anymore.

Wow. Great find! From memory there weren’t any Newshours, though - just half hour bulletins. A good number of the Brits who normally worked in the Doha newsroom were flown to London to help out. There was a lot more taped programming that week, as you can imagine.

In a move that surprises no one, the Israel government decided to yank Al Jazeera off air.

It was slightly amusing when, during BBC Workd News’ coverage earlier, they used a 10 year old video (obviously from YT) of Fauziah Ibrahim presenting to illustrate the story.

I have to say, I don’t think Al Jazeera English does itself too many favours by constantly having a bright red caption across the bottom of the screen that says ‘GENOCIDE IN GAZA’. Yeah, it probably is a genocide at this point… but I’m not sure that’s necessarily for Al Jazeera to decide.

They take a lot of liberties, throwing the most lurid phrases around where Israel is concerned, but treating the other side with kid gloves. For example the Israeli hostages being held in Gaza currently are not hostages, but ‘captives’, according to Al Jazeera. And many of their on-air staff have simply forgotten how to be impartial. But it’s all overlooked, because (understandably) it’s much more socially acceptable to be pro-Palestine, than pro-Israel.

Not that any of this excuses Israel banning them, obviously. In a supposed democracy, it’s utterly shameful to go round banning news outlets.

Hmm… think I’ve seen that male anchor somewhere before!

If they do, then they absolutely deserve to be yanked with that clear bias.

AP’s equipment were confiscated by the Israeli government, who accused them of breaching the new media law by supplying footage to AJ. They are to be returned after the US condemned their action.

I very much doubt anyone here will have the answer… but I’ve noticed over the past few days that there have been no sports bulletins during the Newshours (usually there is a ~10 minute sport section at the end).

I’m assuming this is because there is obviously so much going on in the Middle East right now that they simply don’t have the time for such frivolities… I hope that is all it is and not a broader change in direction? If anyone here does know… I’m all ears.

Mubasher, AJ’s rolling news service, unveiled new graphics last month:

The pointy arrow in the supers reminds me of Gray’s outgoing local package, but otherwise looked quite nice:

They also updated their social media visuals earlier this year:

Hossam Shabat, a journalist who worked for Al Jazeera Mubasher, was killed in northern Gaza on Monday. Witnesses told the network that his car was targeted in the eastern part of Beit Lahiya.

Reporting from Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum said Shabat, 23, had been previously wounded in another Israeli attack “but he insisted on continuing news reporting” in Gaza.
