The club Presidents have voted unanimously for Tasmania to get the 19th license. Now just the Commission to stamp it as official.
Its a pity that unfortunately this momentous occasion has become so divisve because it’s going to make things harder than they should be over this stadium component and Labors lack of support for it.
Though having 19 teams isn’t ideal… will be interesting to see how long it stays like that for…
Will we see a 20th team, or will there be a merger or one club dies or gets forced out?
There wouldn’t be an addition until earliest 2032 I’d say. Whether a merger or a club dies off by then could be the case.
There won’t be a 20th team - we’ll lose one
Canberra (where I am right now for a few nights) is already a crowded sports market with the Raiders and Brumbies, I don’t think there is room for a 3rd full time team.
Darwin might be a bit small.
If there was a 20th team, I would personally like one in Darwin, with GWS moved to Canberra permanently. Then all states have a team which would cement it as “a national competition.” If there is not a team in each state it is not “national”. Period.
I just want GWS sent out of Sydney. I don’t care where. Hell, send them to North Korea, good spot for them.
It will be “all states” when Tasmania joins.
Having Canberra and Darwin would make it all states and territories represented (other than Jervis Bay and external territories before anyone gets pedantic!).
Hawthorn Kangaroos
Seemed a bit anti-climactic that it wasn’t fully “real” today - a few articles confirming it, but then nothing directly from the AFL.
Collingmond Tigpies!
My money is on either GWS or the Suns - although there is an option with GWS to move them to Canberra that might save them.
Now that Tasmania is all but confirmed (and that will likely happen tomorrow), the AFL really need to look at how they can make these two work or have a serious think about where they see the futures of the clubs going.
Agreed, at least the statement from the AFL with 5 words made up for it. Made the sports news on 7Tas with that statement.
In other naming news, there could be issues if the team is named the Tasmanian Devils as that trademark is owned by Warner Bros. 7 News had a story about that tonight. I’m sure there will be a resolution reasonably easily, but if not, that’s probably not a bad thing!
Former Tassie Premier hints at discussions with Warner Bros to procure Devils nickname (sen.com.au)
The ABC this afternoon had the call out for new names and some were good and out of the ordinary - The Tassie Turbochooks was good for our native hens and someone suggested something about the Southern Lights with the greens and purples of the Aurora Australis as the colours which I thought was different and could have some potential and is relatively unique to Tasmania.
For a bird team - The Tasmanian Plovers could join the other birds or the formal name The Masked Lapwings.
Here’s the proposed uniform for the Tassie Turbochooks.
Nah, the name is way too gimmicky. The Southern Lights sounds good though if they don’t go with the Tasmanian Devils.
I’m sure they’ll put “Tasmania” in the team name, I wouldn’t be surprised if that was it - no nickname just ‘Tasmania’.
I hope they are more inventive with the guernsey than the map of tassie ones for the state rep team over the years.
Come on! Everybody loves the map of Tasmania! snigger snigger You can just imagine all the jokes if they had that included on their uniforms.
It’ll be North Melbourne
