Just watched it all from last night on Kayo and surely there’s got to be more to investigate with this after a very similar thing with the Big Bash a few years ago and they said they were going to make sure it wouldn’t happen again.

Just watched it with the kids and now showing them the 1999 scoreboard fire at the MCG. Wonder if the sprinkler incident is on YouTube as well and the other Gabba game where the ground was so wet there was like a wake coming from the players when they were sliding on the ground.

And that’s Port’s season over.

I was at the game this afternoon. Fantastic result. We missed Howe but our new recruits, particularly Mitchell and Hill have been great.

Energex said it was a cable joint which caused last night’s power failure at The Gabba.

Likewise. Port cheer squad went quiet somewhere in the first quarter

The AFL demand that Tassie needs another stadium, I’d love to see them demand for the Gabba to have a power upgrade there. 3 times in only a couple of years is pretty embarrassing and opens up the various sports to a lot of additional drama - e.g. imagine if Melbourne did manage to get across the line right at the end last night. Would that 40 point turnaround have happened without the long break? Not to mention the affects of the flow on the game, the interest levels for the crowds and the risk of injuries for the players.

They are getting one…

I was at the Gabba last night sitting in my usual seat up in the top tear of the Northern Stand as i’ve done for nearly 30 years now for AFL matches and fair to say the night an incredible, bizarre and entertaining to say the least on the biggest night of footy in Brisbane for many years.
It was a very warm night - very humid and sticky and very little breeze which is unusual.
About 4 or 5 seconds before the failure, all 4 light towers dimmed to about 50% brightness - all light bulbs remained on then a very loud bang and then darkness. It was chaos and amazing at the same time. The crowd was cheering and yelling out all at once - people turned there phone flashlights on around the ground and it looked so good! It turned into karaoke for a bit with Country Road, Sweet Caroline and Horses being played over the PA. Everyone was in good spirits that’s for sure.

In my stand which is the Northern Stand on Vulture St, there was no power at all - only emergency lighting. No canopy LED lighting, no PA, no corporate boxes had power etc. The LED’s you could see still going were on the Stanley St side - even when the 2 light towers were back up on the Stanley st side, it was still very dark - TV didn’t do it justice as to how dark the ground still was at that time.

Energex confirmed today that it was an underground feed in cable on Vulture st which ‘failed’ (in their words) - this is exactly the same issue that happened in 2019 for the BBL game except that time it happened on the Stanley St side of the ground.
Energex haven’t gone into specifics on what caused the cable to fail (that will come out in the subsequent investigation) but bare in mind the both sides of the ground have multiple redundant mains power feed-in links so its a shame this keeps occurring.

I love the Gabba and the old girl does need an upgrade even though this technically wasn’t the Gabba’s fault but im happy we are getting new Gabba for the Olympics which will hopefully fix these infrastructure issues long term.

West Coast did a similar thing to Melbourne back in 2021 following a delay for lightning at a match in Perth. West coast kicked 4.4 to 3 behinds following the delay to get within 9 point of the Demons who’d lead by 33 points prior to the delay.

The current rules is infinitely better than what happened at Waverley with the match being completed several days later with different players made available.

There was a controversy right at the end, with Fremantle claiming that they should have been given a shot at goal, after Kangaroos defender Daniel Howe kicked the ball out of bounds to the right back pocket.

As I turned on the tV I noticed that The West Coast Eagles are wearing Caltex on their neckline. I just don’t get why the Eagles are wearing the Caltex Brand on their neck, given that New Balance is their apparel sponsor?

Because they are sponsored by Caltex…? Clubs can put sponsors under the chin now.

Brisbane Lions have Maccas in that spot (I think they’re also a New Balance signed squad)

Yep, other teams do this:

While some teams don’t need the extra cash so just go with the guernsey manufacturer:
