Extraordinary weekend. Only one game decided by more than 3 goals. Good for the competition.

There was also the first draw of the season - North Melbourne and Brisbane finished at 10.11 (71) apiece in the twilight game in Hobart.

What a round!

Coincidentally, the Brisbane Lions also drew with the Adelaide Crows away from home in the final game of round nine last season.

Speaking of the Crows, their Round 18 clash against the Bulldogs have been moved from Ballarat to Melbourne. It will be held on Saturday, July 12 at 1.20pm AEST.

Some sad news in the AFL world today - former Carlton great and media personality Robert Walls has passed away aged 74.

They clearly learned the lesson from the port game. Ridiculous they played with half the stadium being a construction site.

Michael Voss, Carlton coach, also worked with Robert Walls at Network Ten in 2007 and 2008, on their AFL coverage (both were expert commentators). Voss was also Ten News Brisbane’s sport presenter.

I find Nick Watson so frustrating to watch. Last few minutes and he is playing for a free kick to win the game. To win the game off a free kick seems so cheap. And instead of doing that why can’t he try to win it off skill. It’s such a frustrating thing to watch from a neutral fan.

What’s the logic behind having 2 Saturday twilight games this round?

I couldn’t figure it out either, yet only one (very one-sided) night match.

Speaking of one-sided, would it be impolite of me to mention how the Cats went yesterday?

Not at all. I think there were hamstring injuries yesterday than port goals. It was a bloodbath in the game and on the injury list.

No different to how some rounds have two Saturday night games. When there are four games scheduled on Saturdays, a double-up will have to occur somewhere, whether it’s afternoon, twilight or night.

In this case the AFL would have wanted maximum eyeballs on the Bulldogs and Essendon game having it standalone. The twilight slot is also the preferred slot for home games for GWS.

Wait until later in the year when we get two friday night games at the same time!

It is quite different because the Saturday night games have been starting at different times. Giving us at least 30 minutes to check out the other. Both twilight games started at 4:15. Could have at least had one start at 4:15 and the other at 4:45 (they were in two different time zones.

I would prefer that as they start at different times.

A lot of bad press lately, especially the past week and this weekend about AFL House, chairman and CEO in the firing line, along with Laura Kane and admin payroll in general.

Caroline Wilson yesterday and Shane McInnes at the of 3AW Football today, as well as Michael Warner’s recent book and comments to radio today and other media talent and articles.

Will Goyder, Dillon and Kane survive coming months? I’m not so sure all three at least will still be in their same roles.

There’s been some absolute shambles recently. Also wonder how major partners, like Seven and Foxtel, are viewing things. One point is this year’s AFL numbers regularly losing (albeit different metrics) to NRL on FTA, commercial revenue from the lucrative goal ads aside, not to mention the previous management’s current broadcasting contract with no Saturday AFL on FTA in Melbourne.

I definitely think the AFL’s 25 year golden run is well and truly over, peaking around 2016.

A post from respected Stephen Quartermain this afternoon (he’s come to the spotlight the past 72 hours with his viral touching Robert Walls tribute):

After starting this season with 9 straight losses, the West Coast Eagles is finally a winner. The West Coast Eagles have broken through their first win, beating the Saints by 28 points at Optus Stadium. Well done West Coast Eagles on your first win of 2025!

Still unsure why Dreamtime at the G was moved from its 20 year successfully held timeslot of Saturday night

Appease Foxtel? Were they concerned about the election? Some other reason?

It should be noted, in the new broadcast deal, there was a note about excepting Seven for Saturdays if a marquee game fell on that day and Dreamtime was stipulated.
