Given MacQuarie owns 3AW, some of their AFL Matches are also heard in Sydney and Brisbane through their Second Network covering Sports, especially Friday Night Football.
3AW only airs selected twilight games involving Victorian teams.
New name? Wonder how that went at the focus group!
GWS are playing Hawthorn in Canberra tonight, but there is no coverage on commercial radio locally, only ABC News Radio.
That’s hardly a surprise. There hasn’t been AFL on commercial radio in Canberra for a few years, iirc, except for the grand final.
Caroline Wilson revealed on 3AW’s Sportsday this evening that the station would broadcast Sunday’s crucial match between Richmond and West Coast, which starts at 1.10pm AEST. This is only the second time this year 3AW covers an early afternoon match. Note the 3AW website is still listing the station will broadcast the late afternoon game between GWS and Western Bulldogs.
SEN will broadcast the EJ Whitten Legends Game from Melbourne’s AAMI Park on Friday night, August 30.
Have they been told the result already?
The former Adelaide, Sydney and Collingwood player will call Sunday’s game between Richmond and West Coast for Triple M.
It was also revealed today that Triple M will join 3AW, SEN and ABC in broadcasting the Tigers-Eagles match in Melbourne. On Saturday, Triple M, SEN and ABC will broadcast the top of the table clash between Brisbane Lions and Geelong, while 3AW sticks with the earlier game between Carlton and St Kilda.
There was no NIRS call of the Lions / Cats game at the Gabba yesterday. Are they still doing it? It was on 4BH.
According to today’s Herald Sun, Wayne Schwass will call his last AFL match on Triple M this Sunday when Richmond take on Brisbane Lions at the MCG. The former North Melbourne and Sydney star has called time on his 17-year media career to focus on PukaUp, the organisation he has set up to promote awareness around mental health.
It says that Schwass worked for ABC, i wonder when he did that?
Maybe just after his retirement from the Swans?
There was one case where 3AW aired the Good Friday Appeal, but MMM, ABC and SEN did the Perth Match on Good Friday. And there was a case of 3AW taking 6PR’s call of a Eagles-Cats match at Geelong this year too…some abnormal stuff happened with the radio coverage this year.
Triple M and SEN/AFL Nation are also covering the charity game.
What would you guys think about Rex coming back and doing a select number of matches with Shane McInnes? Maybe it could be Saturday nights when 3AW has 3 matches
That’s not a bad idea, especially with Dwayne Russell leaving 3AW at the end of the season to join SEN/AFL Nation, meaning the station will be down to five callers (Bruce Eva, Tim Lane, Matt Granland, Shane McInnes and Tony Leonard).
In other news, 3AW is sending its own team to Perth to call tomorrow night’s elimination final between West Coast and Essendon instead of relying on 6PR commentary. 3AW’s team is Dwayne Russell, Bruce Eva, Matthew Richardson and Leigh Matthews.
I believe that Daniel Harford did some ball by ball calling this year, no? if so, maybe he could call more often.
Anything which puts Rex on a call team occasionally would be amazing! And he works really well with Shane McInnes.
I’m hoping that 3AW give David Schwarz some games next year. He is on contract with Macquarie and calls some games for 6PR.
AFL Nation coverage for week one of 2019 finals. Interesting that SEN is not taking AFL Nation’s call on Saturday.
Was wondering why a few familiar voices weren’t being used on Saturday.
