3AW and SEN will broadcast tonight’s AFL Draft from Sydney Showgrounds at 7pm AEDT. Both stations will have analysis of the draft and speak to draftees or their families.
Michael Christian will not commentate any AFL matches for radio next year, to concentrate on his role as the sole member of the league’s match review panel. He had called Saturday twilight and night matches for 3AW in the past two years.
Nick Butler likely replaces him, if not, who is also in their stable?
SEN has confirmed it will be the only station to broadcast every match of this year’s AFLX series, a seven-a-side competition played on a rectangular field. AFLX kicks off on Thursday, February 15 in Adelaide when Adelaide, Port Adelaide, Collingwood, West Coast, Fremantle and Geelong play at Hindmarsh Stadium, with the other matches being played at Etihad Stadium (Melbourne, North Melbourne, St Kilda, Carlton, Hawthorn and Essendon) the following night and at Allianz Stadium (Sydney, GWS Giants, Brisbane, Western Bulldogs, Richmond and Gold Coast) on the Saturday.
Is that actually going ahead? I thought it had been scrapped.
SEN is going to likely add Crocmedia’s Jack Heverin for calling this year, replacing Matt Granland.
More likely they’ll just take more AFL Nation coverage rather than produce their own.
strong text i agree AFL Nation will be on SEN in 2-18.
SEN in 2017 covered Fri night, Sat early, Sat night and Sun early. Took Sat twilight and Sun twilight from AFL Nation. Heverin not only worked for AFL Nation but also did presenting on a fill in basis for SEN (including his now permanent shift).
Wouldn’t mind betting that SEN cover Fri night and take AFL Nation for the rest.
SEN has a good stable of callers now. Gerard Wheatley, Anthony Hudson, Kevin Bartlett and Jack Heverin. Of course, they also have some of the AFL Nation callers too thanks to Crocmedia.
Herald Sun reports today that former Port Adelaide captain Warren Tredrea has switched from Triple M to 3AW to provide special comments for matches in Adelaide.
So far only SEN confirmed as doing AFLW.
They are just doing the Friday Night match this week.
Last year ABC Newsradio broadcast AFLW on Saturdays with the Grand Final on ABC Local Radio in AFL states and ABC Newsradio in NRL states. But with ABC Newsradio covering A-League this season, the ABC may not broadcast AFLW matches this year until the GF.
ABC Melbourne / Grandstand doing tonight’s match.
SEN and FiveAA will broadcast all three nights of AFLX tournament from Adelaide (Thursday), Melbourne (Friday) and Sydney (Saturday). Talking Lifestyle in Sydney will also broadcast the final day of AFLX from Allianz Stadium.
ABC Local Radio and Grandstand Digital will broadcast this Saturday’s AFLW clash between Carlton and Brisbane Lions.
ABC Radio’s AFL commentary team has undergone a reshuffle for 2018. 3-time premiership coach Mick Malthouse, who was recently sacked by SEN, has joined the ABC and will provide special comments for select games, mainly on Thursday nights. Kelli Underwood, who commentated mainly on Saturday nights, will call Friday night matches for the first time.

AFL pre-season is being broadcast on Classic Rock 1377 in Melbourne this afternoon instead of SEN.
Crocmedia’s AFL Nation is broadcasting two calls of Richmond v Essendon for Melbourne’s Classic Rock and 3AW (see line up below).
Week 2 schedule for JLT Community Series. Note that in Melbourne, the broadcast will be on Classic Rock on Thursday and Saturday. Also the starting time for Gold Coast v Geelong is incorrect, it should be 4.30pm AEDT.
AFL Nation commentary line-up for week 3 of JLT Community Series. Note that in Melbourne, coverage of Port Adelaide v Adelaide will be split, starting on Classic Rock and finishing on SEN.
Kelli Underwood will not be able to host Sunday Session and call Sunday 1.10pm game for ABC Radio this year, after she was revealed as co-host of Fox Footy’s Sunday coverage at last night’s season launch. Kelli will call Friday night match for ABC Radio this year, and continue to host Offsiders on Sunday mornings on ABC TV.
