AFL Coverage

ABC has a bit more leeway this agreement. They’re still doing the match for local radio in Queensland and streaming.

3AW is giving Nick Butler a shot at ball by ball calling on the North Melbourne v Collingwood match on Saturday Night. He also does the Showdown on Sunday at Adelaide Oval(second half).

ABC had Gerard Whateley and Corbin Middlemas calling last night’s Adelaide v Sydney match at Adelaide Oval. No Peter Walsh or Michael Manley. I reckon Peter may be in Ballarat today to commentate the Western Bulldogs-Port Adelaide game.

Whateley usually travels for Friday night games out of Melbourne.

Herald Sun reports St Kilda veteran Leigh Montagna will make his AFL commentary debut this Friday night for Triple M’s coverage of Hawthorn-Western Bulldogs match. Montagna will call alongside Luke Darcy, with Chris Judd and Nathan Brown doing special comments, and Neroli Meadows on the boundary.

He actually commentated Richmond v Brisbane at Etihad Stadium on 16/07/2017. That only went to air in Brisbane on 4MMM as 3MMM was covering the Carlton v Western Bulldogs game at the MCG on the same afternoon.

Mark Howard actually made mention on-air that Montagna was commentating that game across town so at half time of the Carlton v Western Bulldogs game they actually replayed some of Montagna’s commentary on 3MMM.

Maybe he’s filling in, because Howard is doing cricket.

I felt so bad for Gerard Whateley because he had to call the Melbourne-Colllingwood match after losing a colleague in Drew Morphett. Same thing with Quentin Hull at the Kangaroos-Lions match at the Gabba.

Or the 6PR team doing the Essendon vs Freo game given the last game Drew called was the GWS vs West Coast game last week from Sydney.

Really interesting feeding call 2 of the Cats v Swans game into Adelaide too. Not sure the logic there when every other market gets call 1.

It happened quite regularly during the regular season, especially on Friday nights, that FiveAA would take the Sydney-centric call. The only reason I could see is that the pre-game on the main call usually started at 6pm, while the Sydney-centric call started later, meaning FiveAA could cleanly enter that call without having to reduce their drive show. Presumably the same thing happened here, or FiveAA opted to maintain consistency of commentators, or both.

Interesting last night hearing the same mach called by different AFL Nation commentators last night on Talking Lifestyle and Super Radio Network.

Given the ratings of both stations, you may well be one of the few in NSW who heard both (or maybe even either)

The time has come! Same commentary team will be heard on both Talking Lifestyle 954AM and 2SM 1269 in Sydney.

SEN is the only radio station confirmed so far to broadcast the two-match International Rules series between Australia and Ireland, starting this Sunday at Adelaide Oval. ABC won’t cover the match because it is airing the women’s Ashes day/night test from North Sydney Oval at the same time.

SEN was joined by ABC Radio Perth to broadcast tonight’s second International Rules test at Subiaco Oval.
