AFL Coverage

Would they send Gerard Whateley over to Launceston to cover the Crows/Kangaroos game, or does do Blues/Magpies? Not likely, but you never know!

I guess it’s more likely that Peter Walsh or Anthony Tucker would go to Launceston to cover that game. Walsh did work in Tasmania back in the day.

I wonder how many announce booths(that’s what we call it in America) are available in Launceston? Foxtel, ABC, 5AA, MMM and Crocmedia are all covering that game.

Some might do it off tube? Alternatively, space can usually be found at grounds in outdoor seated areas.

Firstly, the game is in Hobart, not Launceston.
Blundstone Arena has significant facilities - the venue map shows 3 media areas - 1 on the South-western wing, and 1 behind the goals at both ends of the ground. I would imagine that between them they have enough space for 4 radio calls, TV facilities and print journalists.

Crocmedia yesterday started a new Friday afternoon preview show called AFL Nation Countdown. Regular presenters Kane Cornes, Damian Barrett and Mitch Cleary will join host Tristan Foenander and reporters from AFL website for the live three-hour program every Friday between 3pm and 6pm AEST. It will be streamed on both AFL and AFL Nation websites.

Michael Maney, David Lithgow and Rod Jameson call the North Melbourne-Adelaide match for ABC Radio in Tasmania, SA and WA.

Does ABC really an "A or “B” team, or does it depend on where the match is? like for example Gerard Whateley doing games at the MCG, Quentin Hull doing games in QLD, etc.

ABC is all location same with the NRL.

Not always. Up until and including the 2016 season, ABC did not broadcast the Sunday 3.20pm match played in Victoria unless it involved a non-Victorian team. This season ABC broadcasts the second half of the 3.20pm match in Victoria after the early match on radio (the full call of the 3.20pm match is on AFL website), followed by the second half of the 4.40pm match.
Also, if both Saturday afternoon matches played in Victoria involve local teams, ABC will only broadcast one match.

I just meant that the teams are on a location basis when they do broadcast games, obviously they’ll have their A & B teams in Melbourne if they have 2 games on the same day.

So for next Sunday in China MMM and 5AA I know are covering the game (and possibly 3AW given they have the rights as it’s the designated A game on Sunday). Suspect MMM (and Gold FM given its the Suns playing) will get a studio based call, but not sure what 5AA are doing with their callers.

Richmond vs Freo and North vs Sydney are the other games on Sunday so a MMM team will need to be at both games for Perth (Mix 94.5) and Sydney markets (possibly digital) should they choose to go down that route.

Maybe 3AW would take 5AA’s call if they are on site.

But Bruce is going over for Seven, so maybe the 5AA tram goes too, and 3AW takes the 5AA call.

Fiveaa are going to China, Steven Rowe, Tim Giniver and Mark Bickley are travelling.

As someone said Maney, Lithgow and Jamerson called the game in Tasmania. Tucker and Walsh called Port v West Coast.

With Matt Clinch moving back to Melbourne Tucker, Maney and Neil Cross are sharing the call of Adelaide Oval games with Peter Walsh.

Usually, Gerard Whateley, Matt Clinch and Alistair Nicholson cover the “bigger” games. Then down the line they have Walsh, Tucker or Maney in SA, Wheeldon or Sprigg in WA, Hull and Price in QLD, and Middlemas and Forbes in NSW.

Assuming then that 3AW would take the 5AA feed for the China game, while sending their own crew for the North/Sydney game.

Is it common for everyone but SEN to call Melbourne based game? the one exception seems to be Sunday 1.10pm- but even then ABC covers the 3.20pm game from quarter time.

Back into Melbourne? Yes.

Last week ABC did the whole 3.20 match into Melbourne after leaving the 1:10 early and joining the 4:40 midway.

It has been so since the start of this season. A new feature of the new six-year radio broadcast deal.
