AFL broadcast rights 2025-2031

DAZN are lining up already to try and cut the AFL contract, I can give you that as an exclusive right now … They’re already going ‘Hang on, we’ve paid too much for this’

But is there anything they can actually do? Did they not see how much Foxtel paid for the rights beforehand?

Is it possible that DAZN will stop broadcasting AFL matches in 4K next year to save costs?

Can you provide a time in the video/pod where DAZN is talked about?

Found it. Single sentence tangent to a point about the makeup of the AFL Commission and administration 40 minutes in.

Well isn’t this interesting. This was a terrible deal to begin with. DAZN don’t seem to be a reliable partner. Sports should be thinking twice about signing a rights deal with them.

They could borrow Sevens Law team that went after CA over the first cricket rights they held.

I am sure DAZN will be happy when they see the Cricket Rights they have brought now.

Needs a refresh of this meme… new 10 logo :stuck_out_tongue:

Because their administrators were not as clever in developing their game and accessibility like the AFL has been.

They probably should sack Delaney. He’s the fool that signed these deals. He’s the one that hoodwinked the sports bodies saying they can’t survive without Fox.

If DAZN are saying this about the AFL, it doesn’t bode well for the NRL rights.

These things are always approved at board level - it’s not one man doing it.
And you know what, he was probably right they couldn’t survive without Fox’s money. But the tap is clearly about to be turned somewhat off by DAZN.

Some things can be learnt by the way DAZN has been involved in an ongoing dispute regarding Ligue 1 rights in France… DAZN could withhold Ligue 1 TV rights payment as conflict remains unresolved - Yahoo Sports

Golden opportunity for the AFL to fix their broadcast problems. Channel 10 is too weak to own the entire AFL rights, but they could be the perfect substitute for Kayo. 10 probably needs the AFL more than the AFL needs them given 10 has been on a sharp decline since losing it.

I think DAZN knew what they coming into, I would expect existing agreements to continue, unless a mutually acceptable alteration can be found and agreed between DAZN/Fox, Seven and the AFL unless the situation were to become so bad that we find Fox unable to meet its debts, which would be a highly suspect situation for them to be in so soon from purchase.

Realistically speaking, the easiest thing fox could do is sell their games to a FTA network, like what the FTA networks used to do back in the day to fox. They could even sell their rights to simulcasting thursday or friday night games, which would cause a considerable uptick in audience on 7, which they would appreciate. However, if they don’t want the rights at all, then 10/Paramount should be making a play at the rights, however, the rights (as a whole) would have to be completely changed as 10 simply couldn’t air Fox’s friday night football that also airs on 7. The only problem is, i don’t think the AFL would get the same money from 10/Paramount that they are currently getting from DAZN. I also don’t think the possible partnership of 7/10 could give the AFL the same money as well. It is a tricky situation, that’s for sure.

Gary O’Keeffe, Seven’s head of AFL, said the network would work closely with the league heading into 2026.

“Thursday-night footy has fast become a staple of the AFL calendar, and we’re proud to play a key role in its success and look forward to it remaining a fixture for years to come,” O’Keeffe said on Tuesday.

“At Seven, our passion for the game – and making it as accessible as possible – is at the forefront of everything we do. Without question, we want to deliver the best matches, between the best teams, in the best timeslots for viewers.

“We will continue to work closely with the AFL to advocate for the most compelling fixtures for Australian viewers, to ensure the most in-form teams can be seen live and free all season long.”

Dillon said the AFL was constrained by several factors when it came to late scheduling changes.

“It’s always a balance. We like to give our fans certainty to organise themselves. We have a big number of fans who travel, particularly for interstate games. Just getting that balance right is really important for us,” he said.

I disagree.
Reportedly, 10/Paramount offered $6 billion for a 10 year contract, which is more total than this current deal, and ‘only’ $43 million less per year. Only reason the AFL didn’t take the offer, reportedly, is they were concerned about 10s ratings, consistently coming in fourth behind 7,9, & ABC. If DAZN gets stingy, I could see 10 being in the best financial position, or at least level pegging with Nine. Seven would be left in the cold if they tried to go solo without a premium service.

I dont know about the contract between 7 & Fox & AFL. But I would think that if DAZN lets the AFL go then 7 would keep their section?

So maybe the way it works is that the paid streaming (Paramount/Stan etc) gets the simulcast with 7 & 10/9 would get Saturday games since that’s Fox exclusive. The only difference would be the local matches but I don’t think 7 would care that much about losing the local Saturday matches.

The AFL would have to get a reduced price from who ever replaces Fox - especially if it’s a FTA and if AFL has to stick with their contract with 7. If they get a streamer only like Prime then they could probably get something similar to Fox.

All this is pure speculation based on a 30 second sentence from Eddie & something that wouldn’t happen for probably a few years.
