AFL broadcast rights 2025-2031

With all this chatter, I thought something major had happened with the rights.
Haven’t gotten this excited since Gecko!

Oh I don’t think anyone doubts that. But suggesting is just a whinge fest is a bit disrespectful to those that might not be as privileged as those of us that can afford it. I can understand how upset many fans are. We need to remember as well that we might be getting Thursday, Friday and Sunday FTA games but that is only 3. There was a time we were getting 4 or 5. Which means the fans with less supporters are the ones that don’t get to see their club play. I can understand the frustration of that supporter. AFL is like religion to many victorians.

Not denying that. There maybe Saturday nights on 9/10 but you would most certainly be paying for Thursday night coverage on Stan/P+. Just look at how many subscriptions you need to recoup $600 mill a year.

But they are also selling advertising too.

That’s a real growth market from a decade ago.

How can you state both of those things as being facts when we have no idea what Nine’s or Ten’s coverage plans (and how they were planning to utilise Stan & Paramount+ respectively) would have been?

By the same token, we also don’t need people who can’t put aside their biases and assess things objectively…

I think the issue was that the deal was slightly changed from the original announcement. It was meant to be that R0-8 as Fox exclusive for non VIC & then R0-15 for VIC.

The addition of Thursdays until R22 changed the Vic to be Fox exclusive all season (which is a fair trade off tho I still think that 7 should get R23 & R24 on Saturday night) but I don’t understand why the non Vic teams games were changed to be WA & SA to be R0-9 & NSW & QLD to be R0-11.

Could be that either there are a certain number of games per team that have to be delayed that wasn’t able to be covered in the first eight round’s due to the delays, or more concessions by Seven for additional Thursday and Sunday night matches.

I pay $40 a month for Kayo and they still can’t fill a single ad break in their exclusive Super Saturday coverage for either code.

I don’t see how it survives through 2031.

Not sure if streaming works the same, but I know pay tv providers can only get so much money from advertising (iirc can’t exceed the amount they get from subs), so that would already put a hard limit on the # of ads. Combined with streaming being seen as a less appealing medium than regular pay tv, plus the fact they can’t fill the gaps with ads for Foxtel programming like they normally would, and you have a recipe for lackluster ad-breaks on Kayo.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the Foxtel service is helping to subsidize Kayo tbh

My favourite was the “no ads” ad on Kayo during the rugby league half time about 15 minutes ago. It was funny.

Then my Kayo feed dropped out for two minutes or so. No joke.

What about the Jamison product placement tonight and the fact the after match coverage is named after them? Is that not advertising? It’s not just adverts…

Then they need to find a way to get rid of the 5 minute break fillers if they aren’t selling any commercials.

I’m still traumatised from that time it glitched out and played the whistling Telstra ad five or six times in a row.

The night before the election EVERY ad on Kayo was from the Liberal Party - didn’t get them very far.

They said 3 games delayed per team but it ended up being different for all teams.

Crows: 4 games delayed through R0-8
Power: 4 games delayed through R0-8
Eagles: 2 games delayed through R0-8
Dockers: 2 games delayed through R0-8
Swans: 3 games delayed through R0-10
Giants: 4 games delayed through R0-10
Lions: 5 games delayed through R0-10
Suns: 5 games delayed through R0-10

Based on the initial R0-8 plan the NSW & QLD teams would of slightly changed

Swans: 2 games
Giants: 3 games
Lions: 5 games
Suns: 4 games

I remember reports of 12 games over both SA and WA, and another set of 12 over NSW/QLD. Which would explain the 4 for the SA teams and 2 for the WA teams (helped along by the WA teams playing more Sunday games than the SA teams).

Can’t explain what happened in the northern states though.

It was first 12 Saturday games for SA & WA teams and Maximum 24 Saturday games for QLD & NSW. I think it was in the broadcast details on the afl website but that’s not there anymore.

Love my footy on Kayo, thanks to my Club Membership.

I pay Foxtel as I am a Pies fan and have zero interest in WA footy and the Eagles/Dockers

Yeah that has been a huge savings for me too. I am not really impressed with kayo though. I feel very lucky and privileged to able to afford it. Would love to see more games come back to FTA. But it will never happen.
