AFL broadcast rights 2025-2031

I think Nine put up a $500 million per year offer to pressure Seven to fork up more money for the FTA rights, a trick Nine last used in late 2005 when bidding for the 2007-2011 rights (this was mentioned earlier in this thread). This may solve the issue of the matches split between paywall and FTA, but still won’t be good news for fans in NSW and Queensland as Nine already has its hands full with rugby league and union.

I reckon this could be a good move for Nine. Move their multichannel spectrum completely into Full HD so that sport can be played on any channel as necessary (same goes with Tennis during the summer). Heck, perhaps even a “9 Sport” HD channel?

Getting 2007-2011 rights deal vibes about this…

Ape Escape Ape Escape2 GIF - Ape Escape Ape Escape2 Monkey ...

And Here We Go Joker GIF - And Here We Go Joker Heath Ledger ...

Would have to get into the nitty gritty of what 9/ Stan are offering coverage wise ie FTA coverage, interstate teams etc, but in any case genuine competition is good to ensure the best result both financially and otherwise.

Their work with the Tennis and Union is encouraging in terms of production quality and FTA exposure at the very least.

$500 mill from Nine and Stan? I’d be happy with this!

What was 7/Fox/Kayo’s offer?

500 mil is nice but it really is only a small increase on 473 mil 7/Fox currently pay.

Would think 7/Fox still in the box seat.

I would’ve thought all bidders would’ve gone closer to 600m. Let’s wait and see what’s happening. Is 9 pushing the others higher or will paramount push to 600. Let’s hope either way they push 7/fox to the wall on the cash.

Considering the AFR reported a few weeks ago that Seven and Fox submitted a bid of above $510 million a year, $500 million probably won’t be enough. Not to mention that the AFL won’t agree to a flat deal that results in the value of the TV rights not increasing (compared to the original 2017 - 2022 agreement).

I hope Nine do get the rights to AFL.

Nine actually bother with their AFL shows Footy Classified and Sunday Footy Show, unlike Seven and Ten who has axed them all.

Nine’s sport coverage is superior to Seven, with the Australian Open coverage etc. being widely supported by MediaSpy.

One of the only differences if Nine get rights would probably be that Nine would air non-FTA matches on Stan Sport instead of Foxtel/Kayo.

What is annoying with all of this is the constant leaks and speculation on numbers. Who is leaking this commercial in confidence matters. It’s atrocious.

If 7/fox are to get them let’s hope they’re pushed to pay way over the odds for the rights. It will serve them right for signing a dud deal.

The true pinnacle of assessing the quality of sports coverage, Media Spy.

I’ve just jumped in and are Nine actually in the lead?

As with pretty much every aspect of these negotiations, we don’t know.

Article says they’re a 50/50 chance.

Given this story is actually from a News publication does it give it more or less credibility?

Is it a nine news publication?

It’s from News Corp.

I’m not sure but the article does say that Seven need to up their bid to $200m/ year to get back in the running; so it could be that putting that pressure on Seven is the the main point and the most real thing written in the article. Hopefully not.
