So any experts on here give us any context as to what went wrong here for the Swans?
Fagan mentioning he has been modelling his teams performance on the Swans makes it even more disturbing.
Could it just be, that the two best teams of the season played off and the other team (Hawthorn, Western Bulldogs, Geelong and Brisbane) on that day was the better one than Sydney? Itâs tough, but thatâs what happens in a Grand Final. There has to be a winner and a loser. Itâs not always going to be fair either, an unlucky yet great club since 2012.
Exactly, and at least the Swans made the Grand Final - there were 10 teams that didnât qualify for the finals, and another 6 who didnât made it to the big game.
Obviously either the pressure getâs to the Swans, or they just have a bad day.
Probably time for a new coach.
Heâs been there since 2010, time for new ideas.
Whilst making 5 Grand Finals in that time is great, only 1 win isnât. When you have the advantages of COLA/rent subsidies, results really should have been better.
Oh definitely I do think Brisbane were the best team all year. Even a lot of their loses they were dominant- just terrible goal kicking.
As a Suns member, a team who has never made finals, I would rather make a GF then not be there. Sydney have been one of the leading teams for years, yes the last few GFs they have played in they havenât come to play but sometimes you have days like that in football.
I get what you are saying. Although I feel making a grand final in 2007 sent port into their darkest times. They werenât ready at the time to play a grand final and got quite lucky. Not saying the same with happen to Sydney though. Hope your suns can make finals next year.
I think today was somewhat saved on a national and neutral level, by Brisbane rather than it being the other way around (Sydney thrashing Brisbane)
Well, the 2024 premiership season is done and dusted; congratulations to the Brisbane Lions once again.
But the AFLW season still goes on.
Sure does - and there is still the trade period, draft, and release of the 2025 Fixture to come.
Now that we have reached the end of the grand final day:
What did you think of the match:
- The Best
- It was decent
- It was alright
- It was bad
- It was the worst
What did you think of the pre-game entertainment:
- The Best
- It was decent - some better performances, however, in recent years
- It was alright
- It was bad
- It was worst than Meatloaf
Brisbane are the first club to hold the AFL and AFLW premiership at the same time.
Here were the predictions from Herald Sun reporters from March this year. Sam Landsberger (who died after he was hit by a car while crossing a street in Richmond in August) was the only person to correctly tip the Sydney-Brisbane match-up in the grand final. Five journalists tipped the Lions to take the premiership cup.
The last time a VFL/AFL team lost four grand finals in a row was Geelong (1989, 1992, 1994, 1995). The Cats then went into a slump, and it was not until the club appointed Mark Thompson as coach that they returned to the finals in 2000. I am not saying Sydney could follow the same fate, but they will sure have to be careful next year.
I think Sydney peaked too early. The Swans were three games ahead of the rest midway through the season. They then suffered five losses in six matches including the 112-point thrashing by Port Adelaide. The losses really jolted the team. Even though they won the next five matches to reach the GF, they were not able to regain the scintillating from earlier in the season.
Sydney were very consistent under Longmire, making finals year after year. But losing four grand finals under his coaching will be a concern. Has the club considered a succession plan?
Brief word for Brisbane Lions. They had a slow start, losing five of their first seven matches, but the turning point was their 34 point win over Gold Coast in the Qclash. From then on, the Lions only drew once and lost three more matches to finish fifth at the end of the home and away season. They then had an ultimate finals performance, beating Carlton at home, before two comeback wins on the road and the ten-goal thumping of the Swans in the decider.
With under 12 months to run on his contract alongside a lengthy term served, it would seem likely they would have the new era pencilled out.
Dean Cox staying no to West Coast may mean something of a succession plan may be lined up at Sydney?
Agree. All year I said Sydney wouldnât win it because they were peaking too early. Brisbane peaked at the perfect time and were riding the finals wave with momentum leading into the GF. Sydney only played 2 games in 4 weeks vs Brisbane playing the last 3 weeks.
Mentioned before in this thread, thrown around ever since the matchup was setâŚ
Joking right?
Longmire has to go, as a club all you want to do is win the Grand Final and clearly he doesnât know how.
Technically third, however the other two played the previous comp before the VFL (VFA). Fagan did play SOO though so itâs not like he was a novice.
And werenât Seven making the case for him
Never the best on ground. Also, how disrespectful to Smith and his family to remove the medal as soon as you get off the stage. What a dickhead.
I think that goal celebration was enough. Heâll probably delay the announcement now it was leaked.
I donât think it should count, given itâs not the same season. If they win it this year too then sure.
You could bet on it I think.
It really does help when youâre up against a side that hasnât played as much. The time off puts you out of whack.
Not even a little bit. Umpiring this season has been completely unacceptable and surely you as a Collingwood supporter would agree. If it wasnât for an umpire wanting to mark his moment Collingwood would have be playing finals.
That 50m penalty had no impact on the game but the same scenario happened twice within 10 minutes and wasnât called again.
