Following on from your observations in the Albury area, today I passed through Heathcote and Seymour, and Star was noticeably stronger there, near consistent in car reception with RDS whereas Edge was virtually non existent.
It evened up a bit more around Mansfield, but heading over to Benalla, Star was stronger than Edge again.
Mount Beauty was a disappointment though, the Star / Edge relays there (90.1 and 93.3) are both mono and no RDS!
No it would be the AM stations (3CS, 3HA and others) that would get the Star rebrand. 3YB-FM Warrnambool on 94.5 would also have to rebrand to Star FM.
The Mixx FM stations (along with TRFM Traralgon and Edge FM 102.5 Deniliquin) will retain their current names but will adopt the knockoff SCA Hit Network look and branding, in other words, these stations will become Temu Hit Networks. Though the Mixx FM stations and Edge FM 102.5 will drop the FM bit from their name and just be known as Mixx and Edge 102.5 respectively.
Edge FM 102.1 Wangaratta is now Edge 102.1 and has Temu Hit Network branding. Please see earlier posts above.
Whoever is running the new Star FM Facebook page is certainly not afraid to get a bit feisty with some of those who aren’t happy about the new station format.
Live and local radio is important for regional communities. Why are listeners boycotting Star FM because they’ve gone fully local? Don’t they want local voices in their region?
Here in the MediaSpy world we care about live and local radio, but it seems outside of MediaSpy people don’t want to hear local content and would rather listen to something beaming out of Melbourne and Sydney. You either want live and local radio or you don’t.
You boycott local radio, you’re asking for potential death of local news services on these stations, and vital emergency information for your local area.
As much as 3AW’s talk format these days isn’t my cup of tea- I can understand their frustration in some ways, given that 3NE has been taking 3AW’s mornings and nights program for the last 20 years at least (likely longer but that’s the extent of my memory) those programs have managed to build a strong following and fanbase, and to have this removed with no warning would undoubtedly be a bit of a unpleasant surprise.
I do think they could have done more to warn 3NE listeners that the format was changing, but at the same time I suspect they would have had the same complaints regardless.
I do think that they are on a winner though with this format (as long as they are careful with their music mix), there’s a huge gap in the market here for a music station that isn’t just top 40/contemporary hits and they do a decent job of covering that.
I don’t see the change being network wide at the moment, I see 2AY and 3SH in particular keeping some talkback.
Nathan Robb and Karen Prater also fill out the Gold1242 afternoon rooster so how live and local is it outside of breakfast.
I do like the playlist but I think they need to add in somethings like a 80s lunch or classic countdown something to just break it up. I think taking Trevor Sinclair in the evening like Gold1242 and 3YB wouldn’t be a bad thing either
Like the old saying goes, you can’t please everyone.
Those that don’t like the change will always be more vocal, we are less likely to hear from the ones that like the change, but there are probably just as many who do like it too.
And @djpower agree that breakfast is probably the only shift live and local, but I prefer the “look live and local” voicetracking over SCA’s hub approach.
I believe Karen prater is local to Wangaratta. I read once that her and her partner “rohin” who fills in on regional triple m and bay fm broadcast from a home studio.
Yes, they live near Beechworth and setup their home studio well before broadcasting from home was a thing. Karen’s managed to build up a solid freelance career across the Smooth and ACE networks.
I think those whinging about the whole conversion probably misses the 3AW stuff that got dropped and probably don’t have the means or ability to stream 3AW.
I’d be pissed too if I didn’t have other means to listen to 2GB’s footy coverage, although granted they stream and ABC covers all matches.
I don’t like the new brand though. What’s wrong with the heritage name?
I think Ace Radio has done a masterstroke to go FM and put the Transmitter in the Warby Ranges area. It has go Fantastic coverage to the West as well and cover about 75% of the Shepparton RA1 area and in Deniliquin goes FM too, I think they can cover the Shepparton Radio area and end the SCA Duoopoly of the Shepparton Market. The Video attached is Star FM at Tatura near where I live. It has very slight FM Flutter on the Signal but doing a Radio Scan in the car picked it up(Compare to AM here, 3NE and 2QN and Gold Central Victoria are weak at best, Best to listen at night when condition are better).
I was listening all day while driving around Shepparton for Appointments with my Mid 60’s year odd Dad and I was enjoying the playlist, It was a nice mix of music all day. Dad said it first, it was a bit of Doof Doof Music(Might you he likes he AC/DC and Guns N roses) but later in the day he said the music selection was really good. It they get a good Breakfast pairing, I think it will be a winner. I will be switching to it from now on(Previously on ABC Shepparton before that 3SR/Triple M)
