ACE Radio (Regional)

ACMA has released a consultation paper for Deniliquin, which is proposing its 106.1 2QN Deniliquin service, currently a HPON licence, to convert to a commercial licence, using the same technical specs.

In April 2020, we temporarily agreed not to take any enforcement action in relation to the use of the ACE Radio’s HPON transmitter to provide the 2QN service on 106.1 MHz to cover the town of Deniliquin. Our basis for this decision was to provide improved audio quality to listeners during the COVID-19 pandemic in the town

Didn’t realise poor AM reception was a symptom of Coronavirus

The regulator is just phoning it in at this point

Unless I’m missing something, why would 2QN on 106.1 be 1kw when Edge on 102.5 is 50kw? Even the original HPON was 10kw

Only thing I can think of is to limit interference to St Arnaud 106.1 HPON (100w Vision).

I can only presume because they’re keeping the AM signal on for the wider area coverage. If it was a straight conversion, they’d logically turn off AM and have similar higher power specs for 2QN-FM.

But that justification for inaction against Ace is unbelievable. They took an alternative service off air and gave 2QN a defacto FM conversion for the last four years, and the regulator is just like “oh that’s ok…”

The only thing is that 2QN on 106.1 was only mono, and always had inferior coverage to Edge.

It will probably now mean 106.1 will be in stereo upon official “conversion”.

It does seem a bit lax but maybe it’s because the licence area population is on the very small side compared to other markets, they might give them more leeway. I imagine the viability is pretty marginal.

At this point the ACMA is pretty much another arm of Commercial Radio Australia…

I cannot think of any other industry where the deck is stacked so far in favour of the incumbent businesses, to the point where significant breaches of the regulations go unpunished (not to even get started on the lack of competition).

Its also probably a reflection of how AM/FM radio as a medium has declined in the face of streaming options.

I agree. It’s basically a protection racket at this point.

ACE Radio Network appoints Chief Commercial Officer

The ACE Radio Network has appointed Jim Glennon as its Chief Commercial Officer.

With an extensive background in commercial strategy and media leadership, Glennon will spearhead the development and execution of the network’s commercial operations across its metro, regional, and digital platforms.

The name Jim Glennon seems familiar to me from the 90s. Possibly on TTFM breakfast doing news or traffic updates.

Female announcer for Mixx FM for Sat Breakfast shift sounds like she’s announcing from her home bathroom. Has cost cutting descended to this? A COVID outbreak?

Sounds amusing. Which market or network wide? Ace love to save cash any which way.

It sounded like that last time when I down that way (2023). Mainly when they were networking.

I agree, it sounds cheap and crap.
