ACE Radio (Regional)

TR isn’t that strong into Warragul from memory - likewise, Triple M has issues getting into Traralgon (albeit assisted by the 97.9 repeater at Tyers).

It would actually be the other way around. There’s a TRFM repeater in Bairnsdale on 99.9 FM, because the 97.9 FM repeater is occupied by Triple M in Traralgon. So yeah there would be 2 “Hit” stations, but it would actually be Bairnsdale that would have to face the music.

hit99.5 Traralgon
hit99.9 Bairnsdale

I meant if 94.3 & 97.9 had stayed as Hit.

Strange, because where I am (about some 2 hours away from Warragul), I’ve received Triple M from Warragul almost very clearly at times. There was one time in January of this year when I received it and it was at almost local strength, 99.9% no static whatsoever. I received it on long-distance FM. It was a superb catch.

They wouldn’t touch the metros. They would probably care more about rebranding the FM stations in the regional areas.

The regional AM stations that ACE Radio owns wouldn’t be rebranded as Triple M due to the fact they carry 3AW and SEN programming most of the time. They would most likely stay untouched.

From Radioinfo:

3YB FM Warrnambool’s much loved announcer Ray Lougheed is retiring after 37 years of hosting the Down Memory Lane Show on Sundays between 9pm and midnight. His last program for the Ace Radio Network is this Sunday October 13.

Back to the livestreams from ACE Radio, looks like after a month or a couple of months (I suppose), the Streamtheworld streams have finally been killed off for the MIXX FM, Coast FM, Edge FM and TRFM networks, alongside AM networks in Regional VIC/Southern NSW and of course their Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane classic hits stations, rendering their suite of apps on iPhone and Android practically useless.

The only thing to see there now is an advertisement telling their users to jump ship to LiSTNR, and a list of previously played songs, which is surprisingly still active. Majority of their apps now gone from the App Store, only a Horsham newspaper app and an agricultural app (operated by ACE Radio) continue to be available for download.

Their streaming provider is now something that goes like w23liw scahw.

…this year with her contract not renewed by the Ace Radio Network for 2025.

2QN’s studio building in Deniliquin is hosting a book launch tomorrow. Local historian Ian Lea has written a book tracing the 90 year history of the station. There’s an afternoon tea and studio tour afterwards. Former staff and people with some connection to the station have been invited to attend.

I’m in town for it as I worked there during 2008 and 2009. I don’t know if anyone else has traveled for it. The studios were painted once while I was there…it will be interesting to see if Ace have done any decorating since buying the station.

Sounds good!

Are they still simulcasting 2QN on their 106.1 HPON frequency?

Yep!

The clock radio in my motel room doesn’t have an AM dial (sadly) and I rode the motorbike so I don’t have an AM radio on me (although my helmet Bluetooth unit has an FM received that I can never remember how to use). But yes 106.1 is indeed running a 2QN relay. I’m glad you reminded me about it because I’d forgotten and was disappointed I wouldn’t actually get to tune in to the station while I’m here. Problem solved!

I seem to recall the HPON running a country music format back when I worked here.

No worries! All part of the Media Spy service!

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised re 2QN, been like that since at least 2020.

Yes, used to be KIX Country.

I think ACE have a done a full internal refresh from what I’ve seen on socials. I’d be interested in seeing some photos of the place if you’re allowed.

The office area has been remodelled and the equipment racks have moved out of the kitchen area and into what used to be a production studio, but otherwise not too much has changed.

2QN in the far studio, Edge FM in the closer studio. It used to be the other way around.

2QN (there was actually a live announcer for the event today but he kindly shuffled out of shot, although I’d have been happy for him to stay in. Edge FM also had a live announcer this afternoon for the event.)

On the other side, equipment racks in the far room, spare studio in the closer room. I used to read news out of that closer studio.

Equipment racks

Kitchen space at the other end of the corridor. The equipment racks used to be in front of this. There also used to be a fax machine where the bin is.

The corridor between the studios and office space has the obligatory network photos.

Office space. Reception is now an enclosed area whereas it used to just be a desk. There used to be a lot of desks in an open plan arrangement in here for sales staff etc.

Book launch

Exterior

There used to be trees out the front so it used to be hard to see the front of the building.

Great photos!

I think I can I see a flag with the old Classic Rock 102.5 branding in the outdoor marquee.
(which used to be a bit of oddity with the some of the music I heard once).

In its later years Classic Rock was a mess.

Classic Rock and Edge (Wang) use to play some really random stuff back in the day.

Had they always shared the same playlists from back then?

No, I believe (happy to be corrected) when Hobbsy took over the music.

When Ewan Dixon was at Wang, I believe he had separate playlists on FM for Wang and Deni/Echuca.

Yes that is correct. I think it was around 2010 - 12 ish.
I remembered people were complaining about the format change.
