Especially as when it’s footy time a lot of people go off to find non talk alternatives, seems like a slot you’d want to keep as music as possible.

Sounds like ACE is hoping they’ll bring their audience across and increase ratings on Friday drive.

3MP for a while seemed to have some shows as a carry over from their days as MTR, weird gardening shows and stuff on a mostly music station, but seems weird to deliberately add a show like that.

They may have been a carry over from the original 3MP that was shunted to digital only as MyMP where the Sat morn advertorials persisted, then back on AM via Classic Rock Radio where they stayed with SEN.

Graham Mott is assisting Ace with 3MP as he has fantastic knowledge from his time at the radio helm of SCB with originally 3AK/3MP/Magic/3AW.

He has always been a fan of the Coodabeens, hence luring them to AW from the ABC and now again away from the ABC to MP.

It does open the station to different clients. Direct is most of their sales, won’t be many serious agency clients save for penny dreadful ones if any agency is mopping up unsold inventory on a special rate.

I think that Stockman’s Breakfast is still going on SEN, not sure if it’s 1116 or track or the app or whatever, their facebook page is active.

Given ACE Radio already owns 3MP, how will it differentiate the songs to be played on 3MP and Magic 1278?

3MP is 100% easy listening, quite different to what this incarnation of Magic offer which is a lot broader.

I always thought Ace Radio would eventually be acquired by SCA or Grant Broadcasters and be no more. But with the purchase of 3MP and now this, it could eventually be a major expansion of their network interstate.

Could they eventually purchase 2UE, Magic and 4BH from Nine?

I wouldn’t rule it out down the track, but I think this has come about from from
a) Nine not wanting the licences to fall into the hands of a competitor. It’s easy to restrict a lease from competing, but if they were to sell, even the best agreement with ACE for now would fall over if ACE decided to on sell the stations down the track.

b) ACE not wanting to (or having the capacity to) fork out the many millions required to buy the licences.

It leaves Nine to focus on what they’re best at. It’s also a good way of harnessing existing talent, bringing it into the tent, with Ace employing Graham Mott, it goes full circle in keeping knowledge closer to Nine than as a competitor.

We all know Nine have run the three stations as low cost placeholders. Ace can attempt to monetise that and Nine benefit also.

It also shows the benefit of Nine as a radio owner, transferring some of their TV business ideas to radio. The every increasingly myopic and protectionist traits of Australian commercial radio hasn’t seen much of that over the last few decades.

Trevor was on 2UW with Jean Kitson so back to old times. It still hope Tim Webster will turn up somewhere and leave 2CH DAB to rest in peace.

Trevor was actually on MIX106.5 with Jean Kittson back in 1997. He helped take the MIX Breakfast Show from a lowly 3.4% to 7.2% in the space of just 8 months. If you’re correct here Rossco this is a great move by ACE/2UE, Trevor was great on Breakfast most recently on 2CH for its transition from Easy Classics to Classic Hits from 2017 - 2019, then SEN had him wasting away on the Drive Show when they made 2CH DAB+ only.

According to Jon Anderson in today’s Sunday Herald Sun, the Coodabeen Champions will make their 3MP debut on Friday, March 11, at 4-6pm. It will also be broadcast on Ace Radio’s country stations across Victoria and Riverina at the same time.

It seems odd that 3MP having just improved their music significantly would have the Coodabeens on Friday night. Seems an odd mix. I would have though SEN or 3AW would be a better place.
