Is Pearl the stereotypical 3MP listener?
Sheâs a regular caller to Coodabeens âtailbackâ ie a character who lives on âThe Peninsulaâ and when pressed to clarify if itâs the Mornington Peninsula replies with variations of âyes, I said The Peninsula dearâ. More a reflection on a typical older boomer whose life doesnât extend much beyond their home suburb, complaints departments and tailback radio. The joke is sheâs been waiting on hold for another program or has mistakenly called the Coodabeens.
Thanks @Frankie, never heard the show.

Which station was it on previously?
ABC local radio.
I canât imagine ACE would have had big $$$ to throw around, so had ABC already let it go?
But I guess it will remind a lot of people that 3MP still exists. So many people wonât have heard anything about 3MP since the '90s!
I think it will work. There used to be a similar program called âFooty Fixâ (ie. jovial, light-hearted look at footy) on SEN which was 4-6pm Fridays which I feel has left a void since it finished. Coodabeensâ might fill that void.
Iâm surprised SEN didnât have a crack to sign the team up
Be way more logical than a non-sports station like 3MP.
According to an interview Ian Cover did with The Age today, it was the Coodabeensâ decision alone to depart the ABC. Apparently, the teamâs contracts had only been renewed on a yearly basis for the past decade and when they were offered their latest one year contract, they decided to explore other options.
there could not have been many âother optionsâ if the best one was 3MP? Will be tough going from the ABCâs flagship to a station currently sitting on around 1% market share but I hope it works out well.
Cooda-what? Iâve said it before, Melbourne is like a different country lol
Perhaps Ace see it as much for their regional network than metro Melbourne. I think they mostly all cover AFL.
Is there a fan base in centres like Ballarat, Bendigo or Shepparton? Perhaps they could go on Community radio there?
Since it seems be a predominately AFL-centric show, itâs reasonably unlikely that Coodabeen Champions was broadcast on ABC Local Radio in NSW (well, outside border regions where the market dynamics are a bit different) or Queensland where Aussie Rules is pretty much a niche affair.
For about a decade they did a national Sunday (later Saturday) night show all year with a mix of music, interviews and lifestyle content. Pretty sure Jeff Richardson was regular fill in for Macca for quite a while too. Theyâre success was despite their Saturday mornings show being about Aussie rules footy (not just AFL) they werenât elite footballers - only one played a handful of games at the top level.
I believe the Coodabeensâ Saturday morning show was broadcast nationally on ABC Grandstand DAB+.
But clearly not many northerners noticed!
Well Triple M has done it for Years?[quote=âVidiot, post:388, topic:14565, full:trueâ]
Big mistake. How can you build a music radio station then take a two hour slab out for a talk fest? Especially one thatâs based on footy and is more suited to community / ABC radio.

Well Triple M done it for Years!!!
Yes, but they went full in with sport (footy calls etc). And lots of blokey talk shows. Bit different to an easy listening music station trying to build an audience for the format!!!
3MP for a while seemed to have some shows as a carry over from their days as MTR, weird gardening shows and stuff on a mostly music station, but seems weird to deliberately add a show like that.
Especially as when itâs footy time a lot of people go off to find non talk alternatives, seems like a slot youâd want to keep as music as possible.
