A teen tennis prodigy’s French Open success is shattered by a devastating tragedy. Five years later, her world is rocked once more when her former coach returns home having won the French with his new player.

Teen tennis prodigy Justine suffers a career-ending tragedy on the world stage at the French Open. Five years later, she seems to have healed, but her peace is shattered when her old coach Glenn returns home, having won the French Open with a new player. When Justine makes an explosive allegation against Glenn, the stately world of tennis is rocked by lies, deceit and a desperate bid for control.

Justine Pearce was a dynamic young sports prodigy who had a meteoric rise in the world of Grand Slam Tennis. Glenn Lapthorn was Justine’s maverick coach with whom she shared an intense rapport. Together, they reached the semi-finals of the French Open. However, tragedy struck on court, and Justine’s dream of sporting glory was cut brutally short, alongside her professional career.

Five years later, Justine is a physiotherapist at her old tennis academy, Longwood. It seems like she has finally healed, physically and psychologically, from her humiliating downfall on the global stage. But when Glenn wins the French Open with his new protégé Gianluca Barzaghi, he returns in glory to the UK with his wife and family to join the board of Longwood. Glenn’s prodigal return triggers a massive emotional upheaval in Justine, who is devastated that her former coach has accomplished their shared dream without her.

Thursday 1 August 8.30pm

In Glasgow, hiking enthusiast Karen wants to build a modern-day mountain hut in the heart of the city, while next door, her neighbour William has plans to build something eccentrically old-fashioned.

Inspired by hikes in the Scottish Highlands, shop owner and jewellery maker Karen is building her version of a mountain hut in central Glasgow.

After a five year wait to get started, the project finally leaps into action when Karen and her two neighbours agree to collaborate and lay out all of their foundations together using the same contractor. But building an architecturally ambitious house in close proximity to neighbours, comes with its own set of challenges.

Next door is retiree William, who in an architecturally progressive street is building something deliberately old-style – a home cloaked in textured grey render called roughcast. His initial plan is to get the professionals in to build the house - but his love of DIY gets the better of him, and bit by bit he takes on more and more of the work himself.

Thursday 8 August 8.30pm

Tired of living on top of each other in a tiny house outside Glasgow, Amanda and Chris decide to build a home for themselves and their children. We also return to visit Joanna and Ben’s Wild West house on the same street.

Amanda and Chris and their three children live just outside Glasgow in a very cramped house, so when the opportunity emerges to self-build a generous family home close to the city centre, they jump at it.

But with little previous experience of self-build and a limited budget, they decide to forego the services of an architect and design the house themselves, an ambitious timber clad box with patterned brick.

We also return to Joanna and Ben who built an American ranch style house and have been adding to their unique vision – making it a standout in central Glasgow.

The Secret Life of Our Urban Birds - Perth

image

Tuesday 13 August 8.30pm

Dr. Ann Jones is on her latest birding adventure, this time across Perth. Uncovering the secrets of majestic wedge-tailed eagles to sexy splendid fairy wrens, she learns why the locals are so passionate about their charismatic birds.

Right in the heart of the city is the Black Swan whose numbers bely an uncertain future. Digging into its genetics revealed an ominous discovery; bird flu could wipe out the species.

Up in the Perth Hills, the Splendid Fairy Wren has a problem of a different sort: love. The female wants both territory and eye-candy. If the male isn’t blue enough, it doesn’t stand a chance.

When it comes to their offspring, finding food is key and one pair of Wedge-Tailed Eagles has got it sussed.
On the other side of Perth, Fairy Terns have found a great pick-up joint, right on the Swan River. But a housing crisis has hit them hard. Human disturbance is rife and camouflage from predators is everything.

Humans disturb birdlife in many ways, but habitat loss is a major contributing factor. Deforestation is leaving one of Perth’s endemic species, the Black Cockatoo, on the brink of extinction. But to add insult to injury, their few remaining hollows are being poached by an outsider – the Rainbow Lorikeet, which was introduced to Perth in the 1960s.

The only way to keep an eye on bird dynamics is to conduct surveys – and The Great Aussie Backyard Bird Count is a vital conservation tool. Ann joins one school in Perth which has more reason to take part than any other.

George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces - Season 12

image

Thursday 15 August 8.30pm

Four shipping containers become a one-off accommodation, and a trailer is turned into a pretty in pink beauty parlour.

Amazing Spaces is back, with some of the most eccentric, ambitious, and passionate self-builders George Clarke has ever met! From a man rebuilding his glamping business after a devastating fire, to a dreamer creating the world’s smallest canal and lock for his narrow boat! From an actress moving up the four-wheel property ladder, to a young couple turning a derelict pumping station into a deluxe holiday home. All that, plus a disused nuclear bunker, a tiny tuk tuk, and a skip! And, not to be outdone, George attempts to create an elegant airborne cabin from an old industrial scissor lift! He also heads to Denmark, home of gorgeous and minimalist architecture.

In episode one, George has the ludicrous idea to turn a rusty scissor lift into a cabin in the sky! He also starts his Denmark trip visiting a modern take on the old Viking Long House.

Meanwhile, after a bus from series two tragically burned in a fire, its owner replaces it with an ambitious new build made of four shipping containers, and a beautician and her daughter create a four wheeled beauty parlour that can proudly claim to be the pinkest thing to ever appear on the show!

Compass Returns - Indira’s Road Trip with the President

image

Sunday 18 August 6.30pm

In this Compass special Indira Naidoo travels to the place she reported on for many years but never visited, on Timor Leste. Road-tripping with President Ramos-Horta as her guide, Indira finds out what has become of the world’s youngest democracy and what the future holds.

Join journalist Indira Naidoo on an extraordinary journey to Timor Leste, her guide is none other than President Jose Ramos-Horta - key architect of this independent nation, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and old friend of Indira from her days as a young journalist covering the conflict in the 1990’s. But until now she has never visited this fledgling nation.

On this road trip through the vibrant landscape of Timor Leste Indira finds out how far this nation has come since independence and how far they still must go.

Indira’s conversations with Ramos-Horta on the road give us rare insight into the visionary leader’s personal experiences and the sacrifices that shaped the destiny of a nation. He takes her to the Presidential Palace to see how he is personally tackling childhood malnutrition and shows her the filming of his weekly TV chat show, The President Horta Show.

This is one of the poorest nations on Earth with 40% living below the poverty line. Indira learns that basic needs such as housing, clean water and enough food are still out of reach for many.

However, the people of Timor have an unshakeable faith - 98% are Catholic, but many, especially in the rural regions, also practice animism along with their Catholicism. Indira is given a rare opportunity to witness some animist sacred rituals.

Timor Leste has a young population – the average age is only 21. Indira finds that despite Timor Leste’s challenges the young people of Timor Leste love their country. But they are worried that the country’s reliance on depleting oil and gas funds and its ageing leaders like President Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao from Generation ‘75 may leave them at risk in the future.

After 22 years of independence Compass sheds light on the soul of a nation that has overcome adversity but still has a long way to go. A visually rich and emotionally resonant story, offering an intimate portrayal of a nation’s struggle, resilience, and the hope that drives them forward.

Van der Valk - Season 4

image

From Friday 30 August 8.30pm

Van Der Valk and the team are pushed to the limit as they try to bring down the matriarchal head of a criminal empire who may or may not be guilty of the crimes she’s accused of committing.

Two whistleblowers are being held under police protection prior to a court hearing that could bring down Bibi Franken, the matriarch of a criminal empire and a former adversary of Van Der Valk. When the first whistleblower is ambushed, Van Der Valk and the team are called in as emergency protection.

The situation is complicated by the fact that team member Eddie has gone missing and the protection officer they have to work alongside is Kalie Tenkers, a former flame of Van Der Valk’s. Fair to say there is no love lost between the two, especially given that Kalie is a suspect.

When Van Der Valk himself is caught up in an explosion, it seems clear that criminal matriarch Bibi is doing everything she can to derail the hearing. Or is she?

When Bibi comes forward, protests her innocence and offers Van Der Valk and Lucienne the chance to work together to work out exactly who is doing this and why, Van Der Valk has a tough decision. To team up or to go it alone?

With those close to him under threat, Van Der Valk is pushed to the extreme as he has to puzzle how a network of crimes link together in order to reveal the shocking truth of who’s really behind them - and why.
