Episode 3

In the fallout of the Gunpowder Plot, a family scandal threatens Shakespeare’s reputation. Creating his most epic and tragic work yet, his legacy is at risk of being lost forever.

For the 400th anniversary of the publication of William Shakespeare’s First Folio, this three-part docu-drama series tells the incredible story of how a glover’s son from rural Stratford became the greatest writer who ever lived.

Deep diving into his life story, the place and time he inhabited, and the work he produced, this series reveals a dangerous and exciting world filled with bitter rivalries, rebellion, murder and deadly plague, that sparked and inspired Shakespeare’s creative genius.

Cinematic drama vignettes depict Shakespeare’s life, as a host of surprising and engaging storytellers narrate the series. Interviews include Oscar-winning actors, experts and academics, featuring the likes of Brian Cox, Judi Dench, Lolita Chakrabarti, Jessie Buckley, Gordon Brown, Adrian Lester, Helen Mirren and Martin Freeman.

Tracing Shakespeare’s life story, each episode reveals the multifarious ways the things Shakespeare saw, the people he met and the world he absorbed found its way into his work. To bring his plays to life, interspersed throughout the series is archive of some of the world’s best screen adaptations.

Told in the present tense, like a thriller, the series captures the story of how a young boy, against all-of-the-odds, became the world’s most famous and enduring dramatist ever.

Shakespeare’s life and legacy is threatened when the Gunpowder Plot unearths a secret he has worked all his life to bury: his family are Catholics, traitors to the Crown.

When his daughter is implicated in the fallout, Shakespeare unleashes his most epic work to date: Macbeth, which appeals to the new monarch, King James I.

As Shakespeare teeters towards death, he reflects on his successes and failures, questioning family, forgiveness and mortality as his work is at risk of being lost forever.

Father Brown is back! Filming has begun on series 12 of the internationally successful drama

Hit series made by BBC Studios Drama Productions for BBC One and iPlayer has also been recommissioned for 13th series.

BBC One Daytime has ordered two more series of the internationally popular crime drama Father Brown, made by BBC Studios Drama Productions for BBC One and iPlayer. The news of series 12 and 13 comes as filming for series 12 gets underway in the Cotswolds.

Mark Williams is back as Father Brown, the charismatic clergyman sleuth based on the classic character created by GK Chesterton. The cosy-crime series also sees the return of popular cast members Tom Chambers as Chief Inspector Sullivan, Claudie Blakley as Mrs Devine, Ruby-May Martinwood as Brenda and John Burton as Sergeant Goodfellow.

Following the exciting proposal at the end of series 11, the sleepy village of Kembleford is abuzz with good news as Mrs Devine (Claudie Blakley) and Chief Inspector Sullivan (Tom Chambers) look forward to their upcoming wedding. But when a surprise visit from the father of the groom quickly throws preparations into turmoil, will they even make it to the church?

Mark Williams says: “As we start the 12th season of Father Brown I feel like I’m starting to get to know him. He’s a mysterious sort of bloke, the sort of person who you can never predict other than knowing he won’t do what you expect. The best thing about playing the character is that I am never, ever bored by him.”

Head of BBC Daytime and Early Peak Commissioning Rob Unsworth comments, “Father Brown is a real favourite with Daytime and iPlayer viewers, so we couldn’t be more excited to commission both series 12 and 13 together, giving audiences another two years of new episodes to look forward to, and underlining our continued commitment to commissioning drama in the Midlands.”

Neil Irvine, Executive Producer for BBC Studios Drama Productions says: “I’m delighted that Father Brown will be cycling back onto our screens for a further two series. The show has an enduring magic which has captured the imagination of viewers across the globe - a testament to Mark’s magnetic performance, compelling storytelling and our talented Midlands crew. Series 12 will introduce Father Brown’s biggest fan, amateur playwright Father Lindsey and a deadly new nemesis, alongside the return of some old favourites.”

With a medieval death at a Tudor battle re-enactment, Mrs Devine finding herself accused of murder, Sergeant Goodfellow’s professional future thrown into question and Brenda ballroom dancing on national television, Father Brown and the gang are busier than ever. And when a Cardinal from the Vatican arrives with a top-secret mission for Father Brown, the priest must request the help of his old adversary Flambeau, while a new nemesis lurks in the shadows…

Father Brown, which first aired on BBC Daytime in 2013, is now a global success with 120 episodes made. Father Brown’s 11th series recently concluded on screen and averaged 2.5 million viewers. The series continues to be a hit internationally and is viewed by audiences in US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, India, Italy, France, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Hungary, Poland, Turkey, South Korea and Japan.

Father Brown is a BBC Studios Drama Production for BBC One and BBC iPlayer, commissioned by Rob Unsworth, Head of BBC Daytime and Early Peak commissioning. The Executive Producer for BBC Studios Drama Productions is Neil Irvine and the Series Producer is David Innes Edwards. Helen Munson is the Commissioning Editor for BBC Daytime. BBC Studios distributes Father Brown internationally.

What did he do to get the title stripped?

Sorry didn’t realise he kept the title, and thought I was trying to say that he use to work for the navy. He defiantly keeps his title.

No worries mate, just thought it was “retired” rather than “former”, but I’m not sure myself aha.

I’m sure he would be quite defiant about that.

Explore the spectacular scenery and iconic locations made famous by some of Britain’s favourite books and films.

Inspired by her passion for books, Mel Giedroyc hooks up with her friend and Dorset local, Martin Clunes, to explore the spectacular scenery and iconic locations made famous by some of Britain’s favourite books and films.

In this funny, revealing and heart-warming travelogue, the two friends walk in the footsteps of Meryl Streep’s French Lieutenant’s Woman, stoke up the engine on a steam train ride through Enid Blyton country and having worked up a thirst Mel and Martin sample Dorset’s finest cider on a farm overlooking magical Corfe Castle.

A boat trip to the world-famous Durdle Door on the breathtaking Jurassic coast proves challenging for the sea-sick Mel despite Martin’s best efforts at distracting her by reading bursts of Thomas Hardy and they meet, walk and talk with Raynor Winn, author of the blockbuster No 1 best-selling novel The Salt Path.

Slightly off topic, but a very nice set-up with the studio in Darwin. The seats around the standing desk look much better than when News Channel comes out of the NSW 7pm studio.

Also thanks for the caps @TV.Cynic. Hopefully you can get some caps of the Adelaide (has started but with dawn service replay), Perth and Hobart marches to complete the set.
