Grand Designs UK - Season 20

image

Sunday 16 April 7.30pm

Colin and Adele build an eye-popping curved glass family home in the south Manchester suburb where they grew up. But things go wrong when there’s a manpower issue with the contractors.

Colin and Adele are adventurous types, not afraid to explore the more hair-raising corners of the planet. Through his film production company, Colin has even filmed in North Korea with dictator Kim Jong-un. However, his next production will involve his biggest challenge yet - building an eye-popping curved glass family home in the south Manchester suburb where the couple grew up.

Colin and Adele have followed their globetrotting instincts by engaging a Swedish architect, an Italian interior design company, and a Latvian building company. But will this multinational team click together, or will their plans get lost in translation?

Right from the start their £700k construction budget comes under stress when Colin refuses to compromise and goes with an expensive engineering change to make the house look like it’s floating. However, it gets a lot worse a few months in, when there is a manpower issue with the contractors Colin paid up front to build the entire structure.

Delays inevitably stretch out; progress is negligible, and Colin and Adele are tens of thousands of pounds out of pocket. As the pandemic strikes, with barely a few walls installed and winter rain pouring in, the build is on life support. Colin and Adele, facing financial ruin, will now have to summon every ounce of adventurous spirit if they’re to turn disaster into triumph.

Midsomer Murders - Season 23

image

Sunday 16 April 8.20pm

Series 23 sees us back in the fictional picturesque county of Midsomer.

Each episode follows DCI Barnaby and his trusty sidekick DS Winter, as they endeavour to solve perplexing crimes while also exploring the quirks of this delightful but deadly county.

EPISODE 1
Deep in Blacktrees Forest, on the edge of Blacktrees-on-Marsh, is a concealed, state of the art, bombproof shelter. Since attending the scene of a terrible flood over two decades ago, Warren Kaine has grown increasingly terrified of life and the spectre of imminent disaster. Fear of terrorism, mad cow disease, tsunamis, asteroids, global warming and financial meltdown burrowed into his brain so deeply that he plunged his life savings into the building of the shelter.

Warren’s extreme paranoia has drawn other survivalists to the village and now Midsomer’s very own doomsday prepper group meet once a week to prepare for the end of days. But after the controversial ousting of a member, Warren suddenly has a target on his back. Preaching survival at any cost comes back to haunt him in the worst way imaginable as the Blacktrees Prophecy claims its first – but not last – victim.

Easter Sunday reasons perhaps?

Following news of Kenny (Doughty) and Ibinabo’s exits, The Rising Tide, a feature-length episode based on the eleventh Vera novel written by Ann Cleeves, will be their final appearance in the series, and will air later this year (on ITV).

A couple of interesting acquisitions from AMC. Given the late timeslots and dropping all episodes at launch probably trying to drive iView numbers.

Also from AMC : Kevin Can F*** Himself on ABC Plus getting similar binge treatment.

Unusual for the ABC to show a repeat movie on the Saturday rather than showing new episodes of another drama series.

Sink your teeth into two supernatural supershows coming to ABC

ABC TV and ABC iview will have you on the edge of your seat when it premieres two of television’s hottest supernatural drama series Mayfair Witches and Interview with the Vampire, produced by AMC Studios and based on the famous Anne Rice novels. Both series will air weekly on ABC TV, with all episodes available to stream on ABC iview from Friday 5 May.

Mayfair Witches is a thrilling 8-part series starring Alexandra Daddario (White Lotus) as Rowan Fielding - an intuitive young neurosurgeon, who discovers she is the unlikely heir to a family of witches. As she grapples with her newfound powers, she must contend with a sinister presence that has haunted her family for generations. It also stars Harry Hamlin (LA Law), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire) and Tongayi Chirisa (Crusoe).

Interview with the Vampire is a 7-part sensuous, contemporary reinvention of Rice’s revolutionary gothic novel starring Jacob Anderson (Game of Thrones) as Louis de Pointe du Lac, Sam Reid (The Newsreader) as Lestat de Lioncourt and Bailey Bass (Avatar) as Claudia. It’s an epic story of love, blood, and the perils of immortality, as told to journalist Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian).

Chafing at the limitations of life as a Black man in 1900s New Orleans, Louis finds it impossible to resist the rakish Lestat de Lioncourt’s offer of the ultimate escape: joining him as his vampire companion. But Louis’s intoxicating new powers come with a price, and the introduction of Lestat’s newest fledgling, the child vampire Claudia, soon sets them on a decades-long path of revenge and atonement.

Mayfair Witches premieres Friday 5 May at 9:15pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.

Interview with the Vampire premieres Friday 5 May at 10:10pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.

Sam Reid as Lestat takes a bit of getting used to after The Newsreader :vampire:

Ningaloo Nyinggulu

From Tuesday 16 May at 8:30pm

Discover one of the last intact wild places left on Earth with its most prominent defender, author and conservation activist, Tim Winton. A stunning three-part series premiering Tuesday 16 May at 8:30pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.

Celebrated author Tim Winton takes us to one of the Earth’s last truly wild and intact places. Its First Peoples call this global treasure Nyinggulu. The rest of us know it as Ningaloo.

Located on a remote edge of the world’s largest island, where red desert meets turquoise waters, WA’s Ningaloo region is comprised of three entwined ecosystems: Ningaloo Reef, Cape Range and Exmouth Gulf.

A region that has supported humans for over 40,000 years, Ningaloo is a wonderland of biodiversity and a refuge for many species endangered or extinct elsewhere.

Written and narrated by one of Australia’s most beloved novelists, this is the first in-depth documentary series about one of the globe’s least-known marvels.

In this spectacular series, the notoriously reclusive Tim Winton shares his passion for this World Heritage treasure, showcasing its vital role as a beacon of hope for humanity.

In the company of Traditional Owners, scientists, experts and friends, Tim explores Ningaloo’s origins and the mighty forces that shape it; delves into the remarkable links between its ecosystems and species; traces the human relationships and migratory pathways that sustain it; and offers insights into the challenges ahead.

Written, produced, and filmed on the lands and waters of the Yinikurtura, West Thalanyji and Baiyungu peoples, in Western Australia, this series has been filmed in consultation with Traditional Owners and cultural advisors, and is supported by the in-depth research and professional guidance of almost 100 experts from fields including archaeology, geoscience, biology, ecology, speleology, marine science, and eco-tourism, all deeply immersed in caring for the creatures, land and plants they work with.

PRODUCTION CREDIT: An Artemis Media production in association with Matter of Factual for the ABC. Major production investment from Screenwest, Lotterywest and the Western Australia Screen Fund in association with Screen Australia. Financed with support from the ABC and Love Nature. Exec Producer Celia Tait; Writer, Narrator and Executive Producer Tim Winton; Director, Co Producer & Additional Writing Peter Rees; Line Producer Karen Williams; ABC Commissioning Editor Stephen Oliver.
