The North Water

image

From Saturday 13 May 8.15pm

From multi-award-winning writer and director Andrew Haigh, this five-part drama series is a thrilling tale of struggle and survival in the land of blood and ice.

1859 Disgraced ex-army doctor Patrick Sumner (Jack O’Connell) joins The Volunteer as a ship’s surgeon, hoping to lose himself in the tough physicality of an Arctic whaling trip. But the ferocity of the elements is matched by the violence of his crew mates. In particular, is Henry Drax (Colin Farrell), a harpooner, and a distinctly brutal force of nature.

As the true purpose of the expedition becomes clear, confrontation between the two men erupts taking them on a journey far from solid ground and way beyond the safe moorings of civilisation.

Starring Jack O’Connell, Colin Farrell , Stephen Graham (The Walk-In), Tom Courtenay, Peter Mullan.

EPISODE 1
Patrick Sumner, hoping to escape the horrors of his past, finds himself on an ill-fated journey to the arctic that throws him into the path of brutish and dangerous harpooner Henry Drax.

Ragdoll

image

From Saturday 13 May 9.15pm

From the makers of Killing Eve, based on the novel by Daniel Cole, the gruesome discovery of a human “Ragdoll” sets detectives on the trail of a killer who also lists six more people due to die.

A stylish psychological thriller from the makers of Killing Eve, based on the novel by Daniel Cole.
Six people have been murdered, dismembered and sewn into one grotesque body – nicknamed the ‘Ragdoll’. Assigned to the shocking case are DS Nathan Rose (Henry Lloyd-Hughes), recently reinstated to the London Met; his best friend and boss, DI Emily Baxter (Thalissa Teixeira); and the unit’s new recruit, DC Lake Edmunds (Lucy Hale).

The ‘Ragdoll Killer’ taunts the police by sending them a list of his next victims. And with those victims to protect, the heroes soon come under intense public scrutiny.

A darkly witty, gruesomely imaginative serial killer thriller, Ragdoll also focusses on fascinating but flawed friends struggling with the consequences of institutionalisation and trauma.

Sister Boniface Mysteries

image

From Saturday 13 May 7.30pm

First there was Father Brown. Now, say hello to Sister Boniface. This clever, Vespa-riding nun is the police’s secret weapon for solving murders in this divine Father Brown spin-off.

From the makers of Father Brown and Shakespeare & Hathaway is the new light-hearted murder mystery series starring a Vespa driving, crime solving Catholic nun: Sister Boniface (Lorna Watson).

EPISODE 1

At the Great Slaughter Mangold Wurzel Festival, festivities come to an abrupt halt when a young woman’s corpse is found within the Aunt Sally dummy.

Meanwhile, DS Felix Livingstone (Jerry Iwu), on secondment from Bermuda, has wound up in Great Slaughter rather than his intended employment at Scotland Yard.

Sister Boniface (Lorna Watson) speedily introduces him to the case and the victim is identified as Grace Pearson (Daniella Phillips), housemaid to the Bellamy Family - a trio of eccentric siblings Electra (Silvia Presente), Edwin (Michael Marcus) and Fabian (Fred Fergus), who recently became wealthy after the sudden death of their uncle. A death which Sister Boniface begins to suspect was anything but natural.

The unintelligible accents, unorthodox policing methods, not to mention the boss’s reliance on a Catholic Nun, leave Felix reeling. But can the addition of this reluctant recruit help the gang to solve the case?

Folau

Thursday 18 May 8.00pm (Part 1)

The story of one our most gifted and controversial athletes and how a social media post landed him in the heart of our culture wars. PART 1 traces Folau’s family background and his rise to the top of the Rugby world.

This two-part documentary is the much-anticipated story of one of Australia’s most gifted and controversial athletes, and how a social media post landed him at the heart of our culture wars, derailing careers in the process. For the first time Israel Folau’s story is examined in all its multi-layered complexity, featuring crucial Pasifika voices and exploring the nexus between freedom of religion and speech, the rights of the LGBTQI community, and how far the workplace can reasonably go to balance the two.

PART 1 traces Israel Folau’s upbringing in the devout Christian traditions of the Pasifika community, whose other ‘religion’ is rugby. It follows his meteoric and record setting rise through three football codes, culminating in 73 appearances for the Wallabies. While initially grappling with the pitfalls of fame and fortune, when his father Eni experiences a major health scare, Folau re-evaluates his choices, setting him on a path that will alter the course of his career and life forever.

Production credit: 2 x 60 mins. An In Films Production. Principal production investment from Screen Australia and developed with support from Screen NSW. ABC Commissioning Editor: Jo Chichester. ABC Head, Screen Sport & Events: Kath Earle. Director: Nel Minchin. Producer: Ivan O’Mahoney.

Originally slated for November last year but bumped from schedule at the last minute.

“We are still working on the Folau documentary and clearing footage which has meant pushing it back in our schedule," said at the time.

With the Coronation of King Charles on Saturday (6 May), i understand that there will be many “segments” surrounding the event. It’s usually the same for Royal Weddings and funerals - due to their lengthy duration.

But what’s the point at for having two segments (between 6 and 7.30pm)? One’s titled “Arrivals” and one is “Arrivals Continued”. That’s something Seven and Nine will do. lol.

Apart from that, another good schedule for the ABC.

Miriam and Alan: Lost in Scotland and Beyond - Season 2

image

From Thursday 1 June 8.00pm

Actors Miriam Margolyes and Alan Cumming rip-roar across Scotland and beyond, as they take in some spectacular and far-flung locations, reconnect with old friends and rekindle old memories.

Episode 1

TV’s ‘golden odd couple’ are back as Miriam Margolyes and Alan Cumming continue their rip-roaring road trip antics across Scotland and beyond.

Our duo kick off their Scotland leg on the ‘Harry Potter Express” steam train, before it’s campervan time again, as they drive to the glorious Cairngorms where Miriam finally gets behind the wheel of a tandem scooter. Looking like a bank robber in her midge-repellent hat, the pair get stuck into some very modern orienteering and have an emotional close encounter with reindeer. All before heading to the east coast to hook up with dear friend and actor Brian Cox at his old stomping ground, the Dundee Rep.

As an ordained minister of the Universal Life Church, Alan reveals he’s been given the special task of conducting an LGBTQIA+ wedding, which takes their journey towards Loch Lomond. A route that sparks childhood memories of holiday crushes for Miriam - whilst Alan insists on a stop off at the quant village of Luss, to relive his early career playing an evil woodcutter in the legendary ‘Take the High Road’.

The episode builds to a celebration to remember in more ways than one, as Miriam gets her kit off for some pre-wedding pampering in the form of an outdoor massage, before donning her sequins and giving a unique read of ‘The Owl and the Pussy-Cat’, whilst Alan weds his cousin and gives Miriam a whirl on the dance floor.

Designing A Legacy

image

Sunday 4 June 7.30pm

In Designing a Legacy, architectural nerd Tim Ross travels the length and breadth of the country seeking an alternate story of Australia; one that shows how great design better connects us to place – and to each other.

Tim Ross is on the hunt for great Australian architecture. In this two-part series he journeys to find and share his passion for buildings with people whose lives have all been touched by the power of good design. From celebrated Australian architects to eccentric American millionaires, and from school kids and surfers to social housing tenants, a cast of great characters show him the amazing buildings in their lives …because Tim knows that when we create architecture, it also creates us.

While Tim is as happy as any of us to ogle at extraordinary homes, his love of design goes deeper than this. While beautiful and luxurious buildings can inspire us, he passionately believes that even the simplest things, when designed well, make our lives better…. and not just the buildings we live in either. There are all sorts of spaces in our lives which can have this effect.

Tim tracks down some of these structures and offers a new story about how our buildings shape us, today and into the future, acknowledging the millennia of human history this is all built upon on this continent.
Episode one, “Country”, deals with our understanding of place and country and how, since the European idea of architecture imposed itself on this continent 235 years ago, it has been slowly coming to terms with the complexity, uniqueness and beauty of the land on which we live.

Dolphins: Is Our Love Too Deep?

image

Tuesday 6 June 8.30pm

Dolphins: Is Our Love Too Deep? is an investigative documentary that looks at the impact humans are having on wild dolphins through popular hand-feeding tourism programs in Australia.

Dolphins: Is Our Love Too Deep? is a ground-breaking investigative documentary that explores the impact humans are having on wild dolphins through hand feeding tourism programs in Australia at Monkey Mia and Bunbury in Western Australia, and Moreton Bay and Tin Can Bay in Queensland.

Hand feeding in some of these locations has caused a litany of problems including high calf mortality, aggressive behaviour, and reduced survival rates in the wild. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg, with mystery surrounding the deaths of female dolphins at Monkey Mia over the last five years.

The documentary examines research from the world’s leading marine scientists, as well as the views of marine biologists, environmental groups, conservation advocates and governments, who all have differing opinions on the issue.

The film investigates and challenges our insatiable need to interact with wild dolphins and lays bare the challenge of our all-consuming desire to get back to nature and the stark reality that we could be loving some dolphins to death.
