The Sydney Opera House website has also revealed the performer line-up.

Artists will be accompanied by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

ABC to focus on generosity of the Australian spirit this Australia Day

The ABC will focus on the communities most affected by the ongoing bushfires as part of its 2020 Australia Day coverage.

The ABC will broaden its Australia Day coverage this year to include stories from the regions that have been impacted by bushfires. Emergency broadcasting, however, will remain at the core of its service for those communities still under threat from bushfires.

In addition to the coverage of The Australian of the Year Awards and Australia Day events, the ABC will share stories from those Australians living in bushfire affected communities – stories of generosity, solidarity and community spirit. Those stories will be broadcast across all platforms including ABC’s local and regional radio networks, television, online and on the corporation’s social media platforms.

The ABC’s Managing Director, David Anderson, said the Australia Day weekend had always given Australians the opportunity to reflect on what makes us who we are, as well as celebrating the things that bring us together as a nation.

“That has never been more important than now. As the ABC continues to bring communities the emergency information they rely on, we will also take the opportunity to tell Australians the stories of bravery, determination and resilience that we are seeing in communities across the country in the face of these unprecedented events.”

Mr Anderson said the ABC’s New Year’s Eve partnership with the Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund had closed after raising $13.3 million funding recovery programs, practical support and emergency grants. He said the national broadcaster would continue to promote all the key charities supporting bushfire affected communities. A list of all major national and state-based charities can be found at abc.net.au/appeals.

Underpinning the ABC coverage will be four key Australia Day events, starting with the Australian of the Year Awards live from Canberra at 7.30pm (AEDT) on Saturday 25 January, hosted by Kumi Taguchi and Jeremy Fernandez. The WugulOra Morning Ceremony will be broadcast live from the Barangaroo Reserve, Sydney from 7.30am on Sunday 26 January, followed by the Flag Raising and Citizenship Ceremony live from Canberra starting at 9.00am. Australia Day broadcasts will end with the Australia Day Live Concert from Circular Quay, Sydney featuring many of Australia’s most-loved artists.

Across the same weekend, ABC Local Radio will broadcast the Golden Guitar Awards live from Tamworth on Saturday 25 January and triple j will broadcast the Hottest 100 Weekend on Saturday 25 and Monday 27 January.

Program highlights (all times are AEDT):

The Australian of the Year Awards celebrates its 60th anniversary live from the National Arboretum, Canberra. Broadcast on ABC TV + iview, ABC Local Radio and ABC News Channel from 7.30pm on Saturday 25 January. Hosted by Kumi Taguchi and Jeremy Fernandez.

The Australian Dream

Sunday 23 February at 8:30pm

The not-to-be missed feature film uses the inspirational story of Indigenous AFL legend Adam Goodes as the prism through which to tell a deeper and more powerful story about race, identity and belonging. The film unpicks the events of the 2013-15 AFL seasons and asks fundamental questions about the nature of racism and discrimination in Australia.

Walkley award-winning writer Stan Grant and BAFTA award-winning director Daniel Gordon joined forces to tell this remarkable story of one of the most decorated and celebrated players in AFL history. Goodes; two-time Brownlow medalist and former Australian of the Year, is the very epitome of resilience and survival. A cultural hero, he continues to fight for equality and reconciliation.

This powerful documentary has screened at several international film festivals, including Melbourne International Film Festival,Toronto, London, Telluride and Hawaii. It has also won numerous awards including the Walkley Documentary Award, AACTA Award for Best Documentary, Best Feature Film Production and Feature Documentary Production of the Year at the 2019 Screen Producers Australia (SPA) Awards, MIFF 2019 People’s Choice Award Best Documentary, Audience Award Best Documentary Feature at the Hawaii International Film Festival, and the Student Choice Award at the Philadelphia Film Festival. The documentary was also nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards 2019. In February the film will screen at FIFO (Festival International Du Film Documentaire Oceanien, Tahiti).

Directed by Daniel Gordon. Written by Stan Grant. Produced by Sarah Thomson, Nick Batzias, Virginia Whitwell, John Battsek. Executive Producers, Paul Wiegard, Andrew Ruhemann, Ben Simmons, Julian Bird, Joel Kennedy and Tommy Gordon. ABC Commissioning Editor, Jo Chichester. ABC Head of Regional Local Sports & Events, Kath Earle.

The Australian Dream is an Australian-UK co-production between GoodThing Productions and Passion Pictures. Production investment from Screen Australia, Lorton Entertainment, ABC and Film Victoria. Australian distribution by Madman Entertainment. International sales by Lorton Entertainment.

The Australian Dream is the first of many programs and content offerings that will feature across the ABC as part of our Walking Together project. Walking Together will reflect, listen and build on the shared national identity of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people and in doing so, celebrate Indigenous culture and invite all Australian’s to walk together on the journey to reconciliation.

From the episode synopsis, it should be series 19 which originally aired in UK in 2018.
Also, why interrupt the series after two episodes just to show Spicks and Specks 90s special? That special can wait until every episode of series 19 has been shown.

Champion Girls

Compass returns to start 2020 with a look inside Physical Culture.

Fun, upbeat music is the soundtrack to a sport that fuses dance styles such as jazz, ballet, hip hop, contemporary, aerobic dance and yoga! The innovative choreography is designed for maximum variety and fun.

The unique sport was brought to Australia by Danish immigrant Christian Bjelke-Peterson in 1892. Recently celebrating 125 yrs, Physical Culture was used to train the WW1 troops, introduced into schools to become what we now know as PDHPE and is the precursor to our current gym culture!

Champion Girls dives deep into the wonderful world of Physie. As a ballet dancer, the director never knew what to make of this slightly unusual dancing activity. Until she ran into an old friend who at nearly 40, was fully entrenched in the Physie world. Apart from being impressed she was still dancing at the Sydney Opera House, she wondered what has held her in this world for so long? She knew a story was waiting to be uncovered.

A true intergenerational community of great strength and colour was found. Grandmothers, mothers and daughters of all ages coming together to learn the perfect combination of movements designed to increase strength, fitness and flexibility. The benefits are increased coordination, rain development, confidence and friendships for life!

It’s so much more than fake tan and big hair! This hardly known activity for girls and ladies has stood the test of time. With 10,000+ members across the globe, Champion Girls, explores cultural and personal significance of this unique and important cultural space.
