Griff’s Great Australian Rail Trip

From Tuesday 4 February 8.30pm

In 2015, Griff took a very successful train journey through Africa. Now he’s going to immerse himself in modern Australia, unravel its pioneering history, delight in its Indigenous culture, meet some of its more unique characters, and journey through its most isolated towns and spirited cities. Along the way, Griff will discover the history of the railroads, the people that operate them and the communities that rely on them – because it’s the railways that made modern Australia. This series follows his journey on some of Australia’s most impressive long-distance trains– The Indian Pacific, The Spirit of the Outback, The Spirit of Queensland and the Iconic Ghan - travelling across the expansive outback and along spectacular coastlines.

To kick off the series, Griff explores the unique Australian continent aboard the legendary Indian Pacific. The first of two parts that will take him on a journey 4,352 kilometres across the country- from Perth in the state of Western Australia to Sydney in New South Wales. In this episode, Griff reaches as far as the golden town of Kalgoorlie. Along the way he meets quokkas, miners, an Aboriginal guide, and highland dancers, all the while exploring the state’s vastness and riches. Griff seeks to uncover what defines the West from the rest-and perhaps most importantly- what is a sandgroper?

Grand Designs - Season 16

From Sunday 9 February at 7:70pm

Presenter Kevin Mccloud follows some of Britain’s most ambitious self-building projects in Grand
Designs, as intrepid individuals attempt to design and construct the home of their dreams.

The brand-new series of Grand Designs is as wide-ranging and inspiring as ever. There’s a crumbling 18th-century listed castle in the historic county Buckinghamshire, painstakingly restored and reinvented as a family home for four. In beach side Cornwall, a surfer brings to life a giant steel and glass house inspired by an 80s cult film. There’s a cutting edge ‘healthy house’ near the London Borough of Richmond, meticulously designed to improve the health of two young boys living with life threatening conditions. Kevin Mccloud is once again on hand to share the pain, and celebrate the triumphs, of those risking everything to create extraordinary new places to live.

In episode one, young Spanish architect Jaime and his wife Mimi Fernandez embark on an epic mission to convert a Grade II listed folly in Buckinghamshire into a family home.

Originally designed to exhibit a fossil collection, the folly was gutted by fire and left in ruins for the last 200 years. Giving themselves a wildly optimistic six month deadline to finish before the birth of their second child, it’s not long before Jaime and Mimi hit trouble.

The Saxon burial ground the folly is built on throws up some macabre surprises. Their stonemasons from Madrid let them down and local builders with no restoration experience have to take on the crumbling stonework. Jaime puts all his energies and creativity into the project, using innovative 3D mapping to squeeze living spaces into the tower, but it’s an exhausting struggle. With money running out, the contract on their rented accommodation running out and the birth imminent the pressure to move in proves almost unbearable.

8pm  ABC’s Sunday primetime line-up usually starts at 7.40pm. Unless the broadcaster is planning to cut the news back to 30 minutes and air a new show at 7.30pm, or extend the bulletin to one hour.

It’s just a mistake in their media release and should be 7:40pm.
