Grand Designs New Zealand - Season 8

From Thursday 29 February 8.30pm

New Zealander Mark Ahearn and his Australian wife Liz are taking time out from their hectic lives in Perth to build a family holiday home in Abel Tasman, however as soon as they set their plans in motion, the universe systematically attempts to unravel them.

Ever since he was a child, Mark Ahearn has loved holidaying in the Abel Tasman National Park in New Zealand. Now based in Perth, Western Australia, he and his Australian wife Liz have decided to take a year out from their hectic lives to build their own family home for themselves and their toddler Winter, overlooking Ligar Bay.
After a few false starts, they’ve put the reins of their specialised concrete business and their two busy cafes into the hands of others and made the move to New Zealand so Mark can embark on building their legacy family home.

Their Christchurch based architect Greg Young has designed a home for their steep site that is a modernist take on the Kiwi bach, comprising of four interconnected glass boxes angled to take in the breath-taking views of Abel Tasman.

While Greg is confident in Mark’s ability to pull his build off, he’s also under no illusion that there is the risk that it could all go catastrophically wrong.

Ominously, it’s almost like the universe reads his mind…

Sally Wainwright’s multi-award-winning police drama returns for an unmissable final series.

When Sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) discovers the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir, it sparks a chain of events that bizarrely leads her straight back to Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton).

Melbourne International Comedy Festival

With only four weeks until the red carpet is rolled out for the biggest night of Australia’s comedy calendar, the hosts for both The Gala and Opening Night events have been announced.

With a rapidly growing fan-base, Festival favourite Lizzy Hoo will host The Gala, proudly supporting Oxfam. And just one week later and to officially open the Festival, New Zealand’s Guy Montgomery will take charge of the Opening Night Comedy Allstars Supershow.

Lizzy Hoo said of the announcement:
‘When I performed at my first ever Melbourne Comedy Festival I arrived in the city and saw the flags, posters, spruikers, and thousands of people lining up for shows all over the city – I was blown away by just how big it is. I never imagined then that I would I get to host one of its biggest nights.’

With a huge cast of the Festival’s brightest stars taking to the stage at St Kilda’s iconic Palais Theatre – Lizzy will host the comedy extravaganza which supports Oxfam’s mission to eliminate poverty and tackle global inequality.

On Wednesday 27 March, Guy hosts the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Opening Night Comedy Allstars Supershow – the ultimate kick-off to nearly four weeks of uninterrupted comedy.

Guy Montgomery said of the announcement:
‘It is a sad indictment on the state of Australian comedy when they have to ask a New Zealander to host one of their most prestigious shows. In truth, I am unbelievably flattered and excited. I hope I don’t bomb.’

Both The Gala and the Opening Night Comedy Allstars Supershow are sold out. Limited final release tickets may be available closer to the events. Both will be recorded live at the Palais Theatre and screen later on ABC TV and ABC iview.

The Gala airs on ABC TV & ABC iview on Wednesday 27 March at 9pm. Opening Night Comedy Allstars Supershow airs on ABC TV & ABC iview on Wednesday 3 April at 9pm. Both specials will remain available to stream on ABC iview.

It will be available on iView in Australia this Friday at 11pm AEDT, and will air on ABC TV next Thursday (March 7) at 11am.

Friday 29 March 7.30pm

Costa makes some furry friends at Australia Zoo; Jane tours a tiny garden with big character; Hannah augments her autumn crop supply; Sophie hammers flower colours into buntings and Clarence revels in a rosy delight.

Happy Holidays gardeners!

Costa meets the residents of Australia Zoo and explores the role plants play in providing food and habitat for them. Jane visits a small garden with big character, full of potted native trees, shrubs, and even a wildflower meadow – all in a courtyard designed to park a car on.

In Hobart, Hannah makes the most of autumn by succession planting winter greens, and sowing broad beans, peas, and garlic, while Sophie immortalises the colours of her garden in striking flower print buntings with the help of her hammer.

Clarence revels in the new, robust, Aussie-bred rose varieties blooming at the Wollongong Botanic Gardens, plus Jerry showcases unconventional citruses; Millie diagnoses ailing tomatoes, and Tammy adds green glamour to fences.
