Comedy hits the highs on ABC

562x380

ABC is the undisputed home of exciting, new, original Australian comedy, with millions of viewers flocking to ABC and ABC iview for a fix of home-grown laughs.

In exciting news, Season 5 of Utopia has catapulted to the top of the charts to become ABC iview’s #1 non-kids program this year, as viewers lap up the exploits of the Nation Building Authority’s crack team of bureaucrats, headed up by Tony Woodford (Rob Sitch).

Season 2 of Kitty Flanagan’s award-winning comedy Fisk , available exclusively on ABC iview, was ABC’s most-watched comedy in 2022, and in 2023 it remains one of the most popular shows on iview, as the probate lawyer in the brown suit, Helen Tudor-Fisk, continues to garner a legion of fans across the country.

While launching last week, the feel-good comedy Mother and Son , starring audience favourites Denise Scott and Matt Okine, is proving an early hit, picking up a new generation of fans and notching up a total audience of over 1.2 million people watching the first episode*.

ABC Head of Screen Content Jennifer Collins says “The ABC has a long and proud history of supporting Australian comedy and nurturing comedic talent both on screen and behind the scenes. We’re thrilled to see our audiences enjoying our first-class, diverse comedy offering.”

ABC Head of Comedy Todd Abbott says “It’s always great to see home-grown comedy kicking goals, and we’re super proud that laughs are leading the way in showing people the on-demand delights of ABC iview.”

From the hilarious wild times in Gold Diggers and the madcap comedy of Aunty Donna’s Coffee Café , to the beautifully executed comedy-drama In Limbo, ABC is the home of Australian comedy.

Australia After War

image

From Tuesday 3 October 9.30pm

Australia has a long history of sending men and women to war. From the mass global conflicts of World Wars One and Two, to the smaller Cold War and peacekeeping operations, or even Australia’s most recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan - in just over a century our country has sent close to one million men and women to over forty conflicts.

From the Great War onwards, combining the personal stories of veterans and their families, and contextualized by commentary from leading academics and experts, Australia After War is a comprehensive and thought-provoking exploration of one of the most important icons in Australian life.

Returning from war to civilian life can be challenging. What makes that transition easy or difficult; unremarkable or deeply traumatic; depends on a multitude of factors. Why, for some veterans, is return successful whilst others fall apart? From the Great War to the modern day, this first episode explores the factors that impact on the experience of return for Australia’s service personnel - from the complexities of return; to how public opinion affects the experience of return; to how we look after our returned; and to how war and conflict changes people.

Ep 1 This episode explores the experience of return for those who have fought in Australia’s wars. What is it like to come home after war? And what are the factors that determine the success or failure of that return?

ABC celebrates Arts Week this 18 – 24 September

image

The ABC will once again put a spotlight on the creative arts as we celebrate Arts Week this September 18 to 24.

In 2023, we’re encouraging Australians to practice art and creativity in any form. It could be playing music in the back shed, learning to knit or taking a paining class. This year’s ABC Arts Week theme of “Happy Making” aims to inspire Australians to get creative in whatever way they can and experience the benefits on their mental health and wellbeing.

ABC Chief Content Officer Chris Oliver Taylor said: “I’m delighted the ABC is once again celebrating Arts Week.”

“The ABC itself is a cornerstone of the Arts, and working collaboratively with amazing story tellers both inside the ABC and in partnership with the independent sector showcases Australia’s creativity across the most significantly diverse range of output, across screen, audio and digital”.

ABC Arts Week comes after the ABC announced award-winning broadcaster Virginia Trioli is leaving ABC Radio Melbourne Mornings to head a new arts screen program which will screen on the ABC in 2024.

In 2024, the ABC is set to cement its status as Australia’s home of the arts, with exciting new offerings, increased investment and unrivalled coverage across screen, audio and digital.

Joanna Lumley’s Spice Trail Adventure

image

From Sunday 29 October 7.30pm

Joanna sets off to one of her most epic voyages yet. In this episode she is heading to a remote Indonesian island, Banda, which was once the only place on earth where nutmeg grew.

Discover the fascinating origins and histories of our staple spices as actor Joanna Lumley travels halfway across the globe on an epic culinary voyage.

Lumley takes an intrepid 15,000-mile voyage from the remote Banda Islands in Indonesia to the stunning natural landscapes of Jordan in the Middle East, revealing the story of how West met East and how the battle to control the cultivation and sale of spices dictated the course of history for centuries.

Following in the footsteps of pharaohs, crusaders, explorers and kings – and tasting spice-laden dishes along the way – Joanna traces an ancient route that crosses two continents and the Indian Ocean, taking in remote islands, jungles, mountains and the arid plains of the Middle East where she ends her journey.

In episode one, Joanna is heading to a collection of remote Indonesian islands, so small that her first challenge is finding them on the map. The Banda Islands were once the only place on earth where nutmeg grew. Joanna meets a family who make their living from harvesting them, she uncovers the dark history of Banda’s past and discovers that Banda’s charms once attracted A listers, including Mick Jagger. In the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta Joanna finds out what the attraction is of the 200 million clove cigarettes that are smoked in Indonesia every day. She pops into a cool speakeasy bar to taste a cocktail that is all about the spice and ends up discovering a newfound love of Indonesia’s national pop music.

Professor Michelle Simmons explores “The Atomic Revolution” in her first Boyer Lecture

Professor Michelle Simmons, who this week was awarded the top honour at the Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science, will trace the path from the discovery of the atom to the race to create the world’s first quantum computer in her first Boyer Lecture, The Atomic Revolution on Thursday 19 October.

Her lecture will reflect on what started out a quarter century ago as frontier science to test the bounds of what was technically possible. In that time, she has demonstrated the ability to manipulate atoms into working atomic-scale devices and created a clear pathway for making a quantum computer.

Professor Simmons said “This is a story that links fundamental physics with extraordinary technological advancement and the future of computing. It is also largely an Australian story.”

“My team’s ability to make electronic devices at the level of single atoms puts us at the very forefront of this field and has given us a unique opportunity to build a quantum computer here in Australia.”

“Current estimates suggest that 40% of our economy has the potential to be impacted by quantum computing and that the global quantum computing opportunity could be worth $150 billion per annum by 2040.”

“My team and I are now on a mission to use our atomic assembly technology to build a prototype quantum computer for which all the functional elements are manufactured and controlled at the atomic scale.”

The Atomic Revolution with Professor Simmons will screen live on ABC TV and ABC iview on Thursday 19 October at 8pm. ABC RN will broadcast the four Boyer lectures weekly from Sunday 22 October at 9.30am and anytime on ABC listen.
