ABC TV - Programs and Schedules

Probably didn’t do well ?

Not at all. There have been quite a few movies that have a short cinema release and go straight to television now. It’s a deal they make. The ABC and SBS have had quite a few in recent years.

Restoration Australia - Season 5

image

Sunday 16 July 7.30pm

Anthony Burke meets self-confessed ‘Architecture Nerds’ Annette and Michael Pitman who own the smallest of all the Walter-Burley Griffin-designed houses in Castlecrag and want to restore and extend the house in keeping with Griffin’s original vision.

In Series 5 of Restoration Australia, host and Architecture Professor, Anthony Burke follows the progress and pitfalls of single-minded restoration enthusiasts who stop at almost nothing to revitalise their beloved buildings.

Throughout the series, Anthony crosses the country providing expert commentary, wise counsel and timely support to owners as they grapple with the restoration of some of Australia’s most treasured old buildings.
Episode One: While Walter Burley-Griffin’s name is synonymous with the design of Canberra, the development of Sydney’s Castlecrag in the mid-1920s was his, and architect wife Marion’s, real passion project.

Anthony Burke travels to Castlecrag to meet self-confessed ‘Architecture Nerds’ Annette and Michael Pitman. They want to honour their Griffin-designed house with a new extension that’s in keeping with the original design intent: Being connected to the landscape.

It will require some serious architectural magic – and on a property deemed to be in a flame zone, they face the added challenge of navigating competing bureaucratic interests of the heritage office and fire-safety compliance. As schedules blow out and expenses creep up, will the pressure of restoring such a notable house be too much to bear?

The Dark Emu Story

image

Tuesday 18 July 8.30pm

A powerful and thought-provoking documentary that explores the cultural impact of Bruce Pascoe’s Dark Emu – the publishing phenomenon that challenged Australia to rethink its history and ignited a debate that continues to rage.

Bruce Pascoe’s 2014 best-selling book – using first-hand source material from British explorers – argues that First Nations people were not only hunters and gatherers but also farmers who were part of a complex economic system.

But Dark Emu has ignited a fierce debate, sparking searing criticism. Academics Peter Sutton and Keryn Walshe published a stinging rebuff of the book, rejecting Pascoe’s theory of Indigenous agriculture, while conservative commentators poured scorn upon Pascoe’s work and questioned his knowledge of First Australians.

Featuring contributions from Bruce Pascoe, anthropologist Professor Marcia Langton and broadcaster Stan Grant, as well as interviews with academic Peter Sutton, The Dark Emu Story is a documentary that delves into the controversy and enables First Nations people to share their remarkable stories that enlighten our understanding of Australian history.

The Dark Emu Story

Tuesday 18 July at 8.30pm

The powerful, revelatory and inspiring documentary The Dark Emu Story screens on Tuesday 18 July at 8.30pm on ABC TV and iview.

Years in the making, this feature length film explores the cultural impact of Bruce Pascoe’s Dark Emu – the book that ignited a raging debate and challenged Australians to rethink our history.

The 2014 best-selling book claims that First Nations people were not only hunters and gatherers but also farmers who were part of a complex economic system. Inspired by the journals of famous British explorers, the book makes the argument that First Nations people settled in villages, lived in houses, devised extraordinary methods of aquaculture and astronomy and were, amongst many other achievements, the world’s first bakers.

But Dark Emu sparked a fierce debate and provoked searing criticism. Academics Peter Sutton and Keryn Walshe published a stinging rebuff of the book, rejecting Pascoe’s theory of Indigenous agriculture, while conservative commentators poured scorn upon Pascoe’s work and questioned his Aboriginal identity.

For the first time, Bruce Pascoe responds directly to the attacks on him and offers rare personal insights on his journey since the publication of Dark Emu. One of Pascoe’s most vocal detractors Peter Sutton explains his major criticisms of the book, which culminates in Sutton and Pascoe coming face-to-face to challenge each other’s point of view. A chorus of compelling and informed commentators, historians and experts, including Stan Grant, Marcia Langton, Bill Gammage and Narelda Jacobs provide vital context and insight.

In the far reaches of the continent, from the rainforest to the desert, First Nations people share their culture and knowledge, shedding light on achievements that are celebrated in communities to this day, and the documentary follows new and unfolding archaeological research that aims to test ‘the Dark Emu hypothesis’.

Rich cinematography is combined with archive, both recent and from the distant past, to illuminate the debate.

The Dark Emu Story delves into the controversy, shares the remarkable stories of First Nations people and enlightens our understanding of Australian history.

Sandi and award-winning comedian, Hollywood actor and marathon running dynamo Eddie Izzard take a trip through the Republic of Ireland’s most picturesque counties from Clare, Kerry to Cork.

National treasure and walking Encyclopaedia Sandi Toksvig ventures to the Republic of Ireland for the first episode in this new series.

On this Emerald Isle adventure, she’s joined by award-winning Stand-Up comedian, Hollywood actor and Marathon running dynamo Eddie Izzard. The trip leaves plenty of time for relaxation, laughter and revealing conversation. Sandi guides the multitalented star to three breath-taking holiday hideaways in County Clare, Kerry and Cork, and the pair bond over home-made apple crumble and fishing rods.

Their first retreat in rural County Clare is a mini modern marvel called ‘Teeroneer’. Full of clever design tricks, this unconventional, prize-winning property is clad in timber and boasts an Extraordinary Escapes First – a sunken kitchen that Sandi just has to cook in, and Eddie has to put her foot in!

From there, the Irish getaway continues in the extraordinary ‘Ark Ranch Treehouse’. Hand-built by one woman, it’s crammed with beautifully crafted detail, invoking an overwhelming sense of childhood adventure which utterly charms Eddie and Sandi.

Their Emerald Isle adventure is rounded up in truly spectacular scenery. Nestled in the mountains and lakes of county Kerry, the stylishly cosy ‘Lost Cottage’ casts its spell over them both. A classic fusion of old and new this remote rental is the jumping off point for Eddie’s very first fishing trip. Steeped in the very essence of wild and remote Ireland, this final location leaves Sandi and Eddie breathless.

Our Vietnam War

Tuesday 15 August 9.30pm Ep 1 of 3

2023 marks 50 years since the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. Narrated by Kate Mulvany, Our Vietnam War tells the story of Australia’s role in the conflict through the eyes of those sent to defend our interests.

2023 marks 50 years since the end of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. Narrated by actor and writer Kate Mulvany, whose father was a conscripted soldier, Our Vietnam War tells the story of Australia’s entanglement in the conflict through the eyes of the men and women sent to defend our interests 5000 km from home.

‘A Popular war’ explains how Australia became entrenched in the war in an attempt to consolidate relationships with the United States. The government of Robert Menzies escalated military involvement, including a birthday conscription ballot that sent young Australian men to fight. While the Australian people were overwhelmingly supportive of the government’s Vietnam policy, small stirrings of dissent begin to appear.

Compass: Hidden Children

image

Sunday 13 August 6.30pm

Brendan Watkins is the son of a priest and nun. It took him 30 years to find out, but he’s not the only one. Brendan meets other hidden children and their mothers, who‘ve suffered from the Church’s silence and denial.

When Brendan Watkins was a teenager he kept his adoption secret because he didn’t want to be targeted by bullies. Later, when he was about to start his own family he was blocked from finding out about his own genetic heritage by an almost impenetrable wall of secrecy from the Catholic Church and the State, before discovering the identities of his own biological parents, a priest and a former nun.

He also discovered that globally there are thousands of children of priests, just like him, who as adults found their biological parents through DNA testing and social media groups. And that while there are often no consequences for the priests, the church often treated these children and their mothers with cruelty and a lack of compassion.

In Australia one such mother tells of being pressured to have an abortion by three priests, and then pushed to have the child adopted after its birth. In Germany, a senior academic from the University of Frankfurt, and former nun Dr. Doris Reisinger, reveals her latest research which reveals hundreds of priests have been involved in forced adoptions or procuring abortions in the last 20 years.

Australia’s peak adoption body calls for a public and independent inquiry, and Brendan and another child of a priest, Linda Kelly Lawless, pursue fresh evidence of the scandal that church and state are trying to keep hidden.

Our Vietnam War

Episode 2 Tuesday 22 August 9.30pm

The relationship between Australia and the United States has never been as close – but a poorly executed military strategy turns into a nightmare for Australian soldiers.

Australia and the United States might be military allies, but their ways of war differ vastly. While the US relied on brute force and massive firepower, Australians looked to subdue opposition forces by winning support from the local population, which meant they were in immediate danger on the front line.

At a political level, Harold Holt distinguishes himself to the US by offering unqualified support for Lydon B Johnson. Johnson’s state visit to Australia received rapturous support, helping Holt win a thumping electoral victory in a campaign largely fought on the issue of war.

Meanwhile, Australian military command came up with a plan for a massive minefield in the Phuoc Tuy regime. Poor execution and surveillance turned the minefield into a nightmare, with many Australians maimed or killed by their own mines. Soldiers who barely survived tell their stories.
