Compass returns in March, with new host Indira Naidoo

Broadcaster Indira Naidoo has been appointed as the new host of ABC TV’s Compass, launching the new season on Sunday, 19 March, 6.30pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.

The popular journalist and author brings to Compass a sophisticated understanding of the changing nature of Australian spirituality and the ethical dilemmas we face. Indira will combine her new role with presenting ABC Radio’s Evenings program which airs across Sydney, Canberra and regional NSW.

Born in apartheid South Africa, Indira grew up in Tasmania, South Australia, England and Zimbabwe. She’s reported for and anchored 730 Report, ABC Late Edition News and World News Tonight on SBS TV.

For the past 13 years Indira has also been an ambassador for The Wayside Chapel, Sydney’s homeless crisis centre in Kings Cross.

“It has been through my connection with the Wayside Chapel, meeting a cross section of people from different faiths and backgrounds, that I have begun to explore my own spirituality more deeply,” she said.

Recently, Indira published her best-selling book ‘The Space Between The Stars’ where she explored the healing power of nature following the death of her sister during the pandemic.

While Indira does not identify with any one faith, she’s eager to find meaning and connection – like many Australians are she believes.

“That’s what I hope Compass can continue to bring our viewers…. a broad investigation into how to connect more deeply and meaningfully with the land and with each other,” Indira said.

Compass is unique in Australia for its focus on religion and ethics- but this year will broaden that focus to newer forms of spirituality and bring a sharper journalistic lens to stories of social justice, an emerging scandal in the Catholic Church and the tricky interplay between sexuality and religion. With appearances from Jeremy Fernandez, Narelda Jacobs, Chloe Hayden and indigenous surfer and artist Billy Bain.

Compass is one of ABC TV’s longest running shows, airing since 1988, with legendary broadcaster Geraldine Doogue the primary host.

“Geraldine is one of the country’s most incisive journalists and thinkers so I’m delighted she will present a couple of specials for Compass this year,” said Indira.

Knowing The Score

ABC sets the stage for trailblazing doco Knowing The Score

The ABC is thrilled to announce the television broadcast of the documentary Knowing The Score will premiere on Tuesday, 21 March at 9pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.

Executive produced by Academy Award-winning actress, Cate Blanchett, Knowing The Score gets up close and personal with celebrated Australian conductor Simone Young, a woman who has broken many glass ceilings within the male dominated world of classical music.

Cate Blanchett, Executive Producer says, “Simone Young is one of the world’s most significant and trailblazing maestros and it is a great privilege to be a small part of this insightful documentary that celebrates her life, her work, and her triumphant return to Sydney.”

This deeply personal doco captures Simone‘s triumphant return to Australia for her appointment as the first female Chief Conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 2022. Knowing The Score catches the build up to, and includes Simone‘s first performance at the reopening of the Sydney Opera House, emerging after two years from the shadow of COVID-19.

Simone‘s career’s many highs and lows go from young trailblazer to a woman midcareer and at the top of her game - until the shock rejection in 2005 from her own country when her contract is not renewed by Opera Australia in a blaze of humiliating headlines and media speculation.

Knowing The Score celebrates the tough but inspiring journey Simone Young has taken as a woman determined to be her best and reminds us how artists positively impact society.

Production credits: Knowing The Score is a Serendipity Production for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Principal production investment from Screen Australia in association with the ABC. Financed in association with Screen NSW, NDR Arte and Seelmann Films with philanthropy via Documentary Australia Foundation. Executive Producers Cate Blanchett, Georgie Black, Mitzi Goldman, Jonathan Page. Produced by Margie Bryant. Consultant Producer Michael Napthali. Written and Directed by Janine Hosking. ABC Manager Factual Julie Hanna, Acting ABC Head of Factual and Culture Richard Huddleston.

Sunday 19 March 6.30pm

New host Indira Naidoo presents the story of former socialite Glen-Marie Frost, who suddenly became homeless in her 60’s, and now helps women with housing and financial literacy.

Compass returns on Sunday, 19 March, 6.30pm, with new host, popular journalist and broadcaster, Indira Naidoo.

In this episode, Indira Naidoo presents Glen-Marie Frost’s story of riches to rags. A glamour girl of the 80s, her career and social life seemed unstoppable. Until one day, divorce and health issues led to financial difficulties, and eventually sleeping in her car. Despite her contacts and career, Glen-Marie was homeless.

Women over 55 are the fastest growing group of homeless Australians. Now Glen-Marie is on a mission to help older homeless women, and ensure younger women are financially literate.

What’s with ABC really butchering live events with very awkward hosting combinations and poorly produced segments between acts, there is some decent stuff in there but my god it’s a really hard watch at times. Not sure who thought Jeremy, Brihony and Rhys were a good trio together

Hate to break it to you but Sophie “Chopper” Elsworth has apparently decided that the coverage wasn’t impartial enough, whatever that means. Was she expecting ABC to interrupt Mardi Gras coverage with a straight pride parade or something? (btw I didn’t even click on the link in the tweet the headline is ludicruous enough. I had to check it wasn’t from the Sky News Parody account!)

Also not falling for the bait :fishing_pole_and_fish:

They should be promoting this hard, like they do with British series even if they’ve been on a subscription service.

Van der Valk - Season 3

Friday 24 March at 8:30pm

Amsterdam’s famous detective is back. Set in Amsterdam, the series follows the work of Commisaris Piet Van der Valk – a street-smart and unapologetic Dutch detective who navigates the lively and enigmatic city, solving mysterious crimes using astute human observation and inspired detection.

Episode 1 – Freedom in Amsterdam - Friday 24 March It’s a new day and a new dawn as Van der Valk (Mark Warren) welcomes two new Sergeants to the team – impulsive hotshot Eddie Suleman (Azan Ahmed) and technical whizz Citra Li (Django Chan-Reeves). It’s a baptism of fire as the tragic murder of a charismatic young freerunning star reveals a dark heart of corruption and rivalries beneath the surface of this dynamic sport.

Episode 2 – Redemption in Amsterdam – Friday 31 March The use of an Indonesian ceremonial sword as a murder weapon takes Van der Valk and the team deep into the world of colonial museum artefacts and the thorny issue of restitution – with an unlikely link to the cold case (and Piet’s very first) of an apparently vicious juvenile child killer.
