As Channel 10 has decided not to renew the NBL as it is deemed “too niche” perhaps it’s time for the ABC TV to get the free to air rights to it.

I don’t believe this is the case. They’ve been renewing annually after ESPN get the rights. Not even sure the espn thing is long term.

The NBL would probably go to SBS before ABC just to keep the sponsored content in their broadcasts.
First year of a three year deal there.
That’s what I was thinking. I can’t see the ‘Hungry Jacks NBL’ being broadcast on ABC. especially since the broadcast is done by NBL & there is a lot of commercial agreements etc on the broadcasts so I can’t see ABC getting it.
SBS did have FTA NBA & ALL NBL before they signed with ESPN & been renewing with 10 annually.

Except the ABC had the rights to the NBL about 10 years ago (albeit late night replay)

I think it is a condition of the ABC’s VFL rights deal.

I get that this Smithy’s appears to have naming rights to VFL but am stunned how or why ABC would agree to including the name and logo (and one promoting alcohol) in its broadcast given how averse it is to mentioning commercial brands at literally any other time.

Yesterday, the match was played at Wilsons Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval. It was referenced as only Beach Oval verbally.
Actually, they called it Trevor Barker Beach Oval in the opener but called it beach oval a lot (probably because the name itself is long)
The graphics had the actual full name with the sponsor

According to the ABC and YourTV online guides, this match is yet to appear on the ABC’s Victorian schedule. I think it may have something to do with finding a replacement program for Victoria after the match broadcast ends, before it rejoins the national feed at 3.25pm.
This is the current afternoon line-up for Sunday.
UPDATE 24/4: as of this morning the VFL has still not appeared on the schedule of any ABC channel. I wonder if this match will be live on iView and ABC Listen only?

Confirmation that today’s VFL match won’t be shown on TV. It is streaming on AFL website as well.
