Even though it’s Rugby, if they put it on analogue radio it would still rate better than Macca

Sounds of Summer on ABC Sport

As footy season winds up, ABC Sport and Summer Grandstand are preparing for a long hot summer of cricket.

Audiences can hear all the action from a huge summer of cricket through the dedicated button on ABC listen and across our local radio network.

The soundtrack of summer is already underway with our coverage of the Australian Women’s T20 International series. In November, we’ll turn our attention to covering the Men’s ODI cricket series against Pakistan.

The ABC recently announce former Australian and Queensland coach Darren ‘Boof’ Lehmann will join ABC Sport’s broadcast team for the upcoming summer of cricket.

Lehmann has spent six seasons with the Brisbane Heat Big Bash League franchise, capped with the Heat’s title win earlier this year.

Lehmann will be joined by Indian cricket legend, Sunil Gavaskar.

Returning commentators in 2024 include the voice of Summer Jim Maxwell alongside Harsha Bhogle, Alison Mitchell, Corbin Middlemas, Andrew Moore, Clint Wheeldon and Quentin Hull.

They will be joined by experts Glenn McGrath, Stuart Clark, Tom Moody, Jason Gillespie and Phil Jaques.

Respected sports journalist and host of the ABC’s 2024 AFLW podcast, Sam Lane will join Summer Grandstand following the departure of Karen Tighe.

Joining Sam across the weekends, is mad sports fan, broadcaster and comedian, Anthony “Lehmo” Lehmann.

Audiences will be able to hear every ball of the summer with the ABC recently renewing and increasing our partnership with Cricket Australia for a further 7 years.

The agreement will allow the ABC to continue to provide all Australians with access to all Test Matches, T20 Internationals, One Day Internationals and Women’s Big Bash League played in Australia. The new deal will also see the ABC cover Men’s Big Bash League for the first time in over a decade.

Last summer’s ABC cricket coverage saw ABC listen achieve its highest weekly users on record, with 517,000 people using the app in the week of 21 to 27 January representing an 11% increase when compared to the same time the year before.

The Grade Cricketer will also be a part of the ABC’s summer cricket coverage, bringing their unique brand of commentary and insights to lunchtimes across the test series.

Australian Open and ABC extend audio partnership

The Australian Open has announced a five-year agreement with ABC Sport for audio rights at AO 2025.

The agreement continues the partnership formed in 2024 which brought all the highlights from Australia’s Grand Slam to audiences live and ad free across the ABC local radio network and ABC listen.

“The ABC has been a fantastic partner of the Australian Open and we are delighted to extend and expand our collaboration,” Tennis Australia’s Head of Media Business Development John Garcia said.

“Together we look forward to connecting with an even wider fan base across multiple platforms and bringing all the on-court action and human stories to ABC listeners.”

In 2025, the ABC’s roster of expert commentators, including Corbin Middlemas, Andrew Moore, Quentin Hull, Ben Cameron, Lauren Bordin and Catherine Murphy, will be joined by John Alexander and Roger Rasheed to provide play by play commentary of the big matches, with a focus on Australian players across the draw, plus all the big finals.

“The ABC is delighted to continue our partnership with the Australian Open,” ABC Head of Audio Ben Latimer said.

“Audiences across Australia tuned in to the ABC during the Australian Open 2024 across ABC local radio, ABC listen and our ABC Tennis Podcast which was launched to coincide with the event.

“This partnership will allow us to increase our coverage over the next five years and build a deeper connection between the ABC audiences and Australian tennis.”

ABC listen is the best place to hear all the action, where audiences will be able to hear the morning and evening sessions live and uninterrupted each day of the tournament, through a dedicated Australian Open button.

The ABC will support our live coverage with content unpacking the action from the competition across our platforms.

Australian Open 2025 will air on ABC local radio and ABC listen from the 12-26 January. Further details including match schedules and commentary teams will be available closer to the event.
