From another thread:
Paramatta apparently depends on Ultimo being up and running
NewsRadio isnât based at Parramatta. They could theoretically run it from there, but probably arenât setup with everything they need to run the station as per usual.
Worth noting this morning they still had ABC TOH bulletins and NewsRadio weather some hours. BBC World Service filled the remaining ~55 mins of every hour.
Parramatta is an extension of Ultimoâs network. Radio MCR is still at Ultimo, and on the TV side they probably rely on servers, network, etc.
And if the radio studios were up and running at Paramatta, they probably wouldâve given ABC Sydney priority before NewsRadio.
oh 100% - we all know newsradio is basically a low cost service to fill the gaps when parliament is not on. its actually surprising me to me when they spend money and refresh the stingers. its gone down hill since the old PNN days. local radio rates, newsradio doesnât
Doesnât need to, itâs a service. The ABC is a public service broadcaster.
I get that. Iâve listened to newsradio since around 1996 so iâm a LOOONNG time listener and it has defintly gone downhill over all - too much longform programming and the dip in, dip out news format is pretty much dead.
when you have a limited number of studios thanks to upgrades, it would make sense for the ABC to priortise the higher rating network over the lower rating one, even if they are a service.
Speaking of down hill, why was the BBC on again when I tuned in at 7pm? Does Laura (who supposedly does the evening show) ever do a whole week? Seriously I suspect they got rid of the schedule online and in the app to just do this chopping and changing without any scrutiny.
Itâs easier and cheaper to run BBC/rehashed ABCRN content than it is to employ the news hounds. They did always have some long form programming though, such as NPRâs âAll Things Consideredâ which I donât think they air anymore.
I donât mind long-form current affairs programming on NewsRadio â shows like All Things Considered or Inside Europe from DW are great for weekend listening. My main concern is that if the schedule needs to be padded out with longer content, it should still be focused on news or current affairs.
Some of the current programming just doesnât fit a news-focused station. Hoof on the Till, for instance â a long-form horse racing show â feels completely out of place. Even running the science and religion show is a bit of a stretch in this context.
Surely there are high-quality current affairs programs from other public broadcasters around the world â including Europe and Africa â that could be included instead. It would be great to hear a wider range of perspectives on global news. There must be at least one solid current affairs program from a reputable African public broadcaster that could be added to the mix.
I think Hoof on the Till stopped broadcasting in 2019? I just wished they would treat the station like they do the news channel. Heck even doing a France info (hybrid tv and radio network) for the weekends and evenings would at least be better than the constant BBC World Service/RN repeats. Radio national is already doing repeats on weekend arvos, no need to do the same for NewsRadio.
Have a listen to CBC Radio 1 in the late afternoon/evening our time (overnight their time). Vancouver works the best. They air a plethora of international programmes including some from RN.
As far as Africa is concerned, they mainly get the BBC and CRI pumped in (eg Nairobi) so I donât think they have a well resourced public broadcaster. South Africa would be the best bet .
I have actually lived in north west Ontario and until was a regular CBC listener. I used to stay up and listen to the law report both as someone who has an interest in the law and an expat Aussie to hear an Aussie accent.
I notice even The Law Report weighed in on âthat Mushroom Caseâ this week. There should be an exclusion clause- pardon the pun- on discussing that!
Another evening with no local News programming on NewsRadio. ![]()
They should convert ABC NewsRadio Gosford from 98.1 FM to 1053 AM and ABC Local Radio Gosford from 92.5 FM to 864 AM.
Not going to happen. 864 is right next to 2GB and 1053 will interfere with 2CA
Why on earth would the ABC want to move them to AM?
Because NewsRadio 98.1 FM in Gosford NSW pushes into Power FM Muswellbrook or i98fm Illawarra and 92.5 always had low power reception and wonât pick up the stations thatâs why
