ABC News (Radio)

Plus they only have 5 minutes to fill - and probably only room for 30-60 seconds of sport given they’ve got to keep viewers updated on the rest of the days news.

These comments were mentioned in The Australian’s Media Diary today.

Jim Maxwell’s short-pitched delivery to the ABC over sports coverage

And in the context of recent internal criticisms of the skewed priorities of the ABC News department, it raises the question as to whether the same level of scrutiny will be applied to the broadcasters’ sports division.

Has Maxwell breached the ABC’s (supposedly) strict social media policy with his criticism of the organisation’s sports coverage?

Will he be disciplined by the ABC’s social media police? And how do you discipline a journalist of Maxwell’s standing and experience if what he says is demonstrably true?

old man yells at cloud vibes on his Twitter, where he posts A LOT. I’d be telling him to pull his head in.

NewsRadio has updated music - rolled out on Monday

More generic library music crap. It is remarkable they don’t use the remixed majestic fanfare or updated TV news theme.

I noticed today that ABC News Radio are not broadcasting parliament. I know that the streaming and DAB services don’t but the local FM outlet is just broadcasting the main ABC News Radio program feed. I was always under the impression that it was legislated that it had to be broadcast, unless there has been a legislative change that went unnoticed. Can anyone shed some light here?

It’s been parliament all day in Canberra. Odd.

Could be a switching error

Normal analogue transmission in Perth on 585 - still Parliament. Might only be happening for the newer FM (which are mainly regional) frequencies?

Similar in QLD - Brisbane AM is Parliament.

All the surrounding FM frequencies are on News Radio - Gold Coast, Sunshine, Wide Bay, Rockhampton, Toowoomba etc Also NNSW and Coffs.

They usually broadcast parliament on the FM frequencies, hence why I was wondering if there was a very quiet legislative change regarding broadcasting of parliament. I can’t hear any of the AM NewsRadio stations where I am.

I believe News Radio takes a national ABC bulletin at :00 and :30 headlines. The :00 sounds like it has an opt-out, which News Radio continues through. Does anyone know which other stations take these bulletins?

I believe all the Local Radio stations take State bulletins, and even Radio National takes the State bulletins based on where they transmit?

Does ABC have a twice-hourly National bulletin for the benefit of News Radio and random other services? (maybe Local takes it if there’s an issue with their State’s bulletin? Maybe it’s provided online? Maybe Radio Australia? Maybe Classic FM whenever they broadcast news?)

I’ve been wondering this since News Radio ditched their 15-minute rolling format back in 2021 (?) and started taking traditional bulletins at :00 and :30. Hopefully someone here knows.

The Wikipedia article has some out of date info, which provides some clues but doesn’t help a lot: ABC News (Australia) - Wikipedia

News Radio has its own national news bulletins at :00 and news headlines at :30 (Sydney time). Radio National and Local Radio share the national bulletins, especially on weekends.

Interesting. I had assumed it would be unusual for ABC to spend money creating more bulletins for a fairly low-rating station. Did they already do national bulletins pre-2021 and just re-purpose them?

Classic FM also broadcast state/territory bulletins when they have news in breakfast and drive. 102.3 Canberra has ACT content.

I’m pretty sure the national radio bulletins are used for ABC Radio National (only on streaming/ABC listen app), for the Breakfast and Drive shows on ABC Classic (only on streaming/ABC listen app) and ABC Radio Australia? On AM/FM radio, Radio National and Classic takes the local statewide news all day until 8PM on weekdays.

Then pretty sure all ABC radio stations use the national bulletin from 8PM on all platforms right until the Breakfast slots. The national bulletin is also used for smart speakers and the national news on the listen app.

On weekends, ABC local radio stations stop local news after the 12pm bulletin as it is sports all afternoon. National news only on digital and after the sport finishes for the day on radio. The national news is also heard on Radio National and NewsRadio (No news on Classic after the Breakfast show on weekends).

Possible that Radio Australia also takes them (or at least the TOTH ones)

News Radio will be taking the BBC World Service feed all weekend due to studio works/upgrades. I don’t know why they can’t just broadcast from a different studio.

Isn’t Parramatta studio available?
