Caroline Jones Scholarship
ABC NEWS is delighted to announce the launch of the Caroline Jones Scholarship, a 12-month cadet position providing financial and on-the-job development for a talented Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person who aspires to be a journalist.
The scholarship is named in honour of the distinguished broadcaster and journalist Caroline Jones AO, who had a more than 50-year career at the ABC before retiring in 2016. Caroline was the first woman reporter on This Day Tonight and the first woman to anchor Four Corners, and was associated with Australian Story since its inception in 1996. In 1997 she was voted one of Australia’s Living Treasures.
“I’m honoured to have this Scholarship initiated in my name by ABC NEWS,” Caroline says. “So many people opened doors of possibility for me. This Scholarship will offer an outstanding career opportunity each year for a young Indigenous person.
“It’s a project close to my heart and I welcome the prospect of more Indigenous journalists taking their place in the Australian media.”
The Scholarship provides an opportunity for the successful candidate to build a career in news and current affairs. He or she will do a range of work placements within ABC NEWS, including with the Specialist Reporting Team, ABC Investigations, the business and digital teams, Foreign Correspondent and Four Corners.
ABC Director, News Gaven Morris says: “This wonderful initiative is a fitting tribute to one of our finest journalists, who remains a loved and valued member of the ABC family.
“The scholarship provides a terrific opportunity for a passionate and talented young Indigenous person to build a career in multiplatform storytelling.”
Applications are open now and close on 8 April, with the successful applicant starting with ABC NEWS in May. More details on the program can be found on the ABC Careers website.

Interesting. Whilst I agree the regional reporters ought to be utilised more, the appeal to me of ABC news is its national and world news. Oh well, suppose I’m a lefty elite for not enjoying petty crime and cats up drainpipe stories.

The BBC can manage to have human interest stories with fairly mainstream appeal. Why can’t the ABC?
I guess it comes down to interpretation of what is a human interest story. I’ve not seen much BBC news to know what they do.
They’re about halfway between ABC and Seven. But their mandate is much more substantial and mainstream than the ABC’s charter.
Bit of a blooper tonight in Melbourne. Ian was doing the intro to the parcel tax and the package started playing over him with VO. Then there was a pause at the end as the auto cue obviously jumped to the next story. Threw to the next one and then you could hear him say “does anyone know what just happened there?” Over the top of the story. He’s not looking too pleased now…

And Paul gave a different greeting in tonight’s bulletin. Previously it was “Paul Higgins with ABC News”, tonight he said “Hello, welcome to ABC News, I am Paul Higgins.”

No, ABC News ACT changes the panoramic photo on their title card seasonally - or at least they did last year so one for winter, autumn, etc.
