Yes. As you said - important to the commercial networks. ABC is not a commercial network.
Its still important to the ABC too - NSW had a stable presenter line up until recently.
Youâve just contradicted yourself.
Thereâs a heap of reasons why presenters may be unavailable; reporting, in-depth specials, sickness, leave etc. The budget that ABC had in years gone by has gone.
Theyâre just spreading resources around more efficiently.
Not at all.
But agree that the ABC doesnât have the budget to deal with absences or other unforeseen circumstances.

Yes - as discussed here
And here
Did Glenday? Feel the only person to do that consistently was Bourchier, who personally made it a thing. But because itâs Bourchier it always felt forced and incredibly unnatural.
James, Jade, Dan, and Adrienne have all said it
Guess he chooses not to, maybe he feels itâs not appropriate.
Do other ABC newsreaders outside Canberra use indigenous language in their presentations?
I donât think so - I think either itâs a decision by the local team, or they donât do it in other states/territories due to them being broadcasted across multiple language groups (unlike the ACT).
Correct me if Iâm wrong but I think it may have something to do with the fact that itâs generally said by Indigenous presenters according to their heritage/state. Dan Bourchier is Indigenous (although I think heâs from Darwin) and it seems like heâs greeting them using the local language in the Canberra area. Not sure if Adrienne Francis has Indigenous heritage but could be possible.
Narelda Jacobs always greets the audience with a âKayaâ when she presents as thatâs the equivalent of âHelloâ in the Whadjuk Noongar people who are the First Nations people native to Perth.
Hope that makes sense.
No. Iâd never heard of it being used until seeing on these forums that Canberra uses it on its news.
No, nor do they have such extensive acknowledgements of country at the start.
Itâs not doing the ABC any favours, will be taken the wrong way outside the far left circle, Canberra isnât completely left wing either.
