That does not affect the 7pm news
Strong chance Michael Rowland is added to Melbourne 7pm roster.
Just noting in Queensland, Lexy Hamilton-Smith presented ABC News QLD last night.
Regular presenter Jessica van Vonderen is in Cairns, ahead of a news broadcast from the region tonight focusing on the Far North Queensland federal election seat of Leichhardt. She briefly previewed this during the bulletin last night.
Wednesday 30 April -
Ishkandar Razak presenting in Victoria tonight.
As flagged - ABC News Queensland with a partial OB tonight.
Jessica van Vonderen live in Cairns with initial election stories and live interview with retiring MP for Leichhardt Warren Entsch.
Afterwards, back to the studio where Lexy Hamilton-Smith had the rest of the days news.
And weatherman Adam has been missing all week too. He seems to be off more than on.
Lots of people are on leave this time of year, nothing unusual. And I don’t remember Adam being away all that much.
I reckon Adam is on air presenting weather every two weeks or so.
Yes, I’ve noticed that, too. I’m not quite sure what I think of him just yet… he’s no Paul Higgins.
It’s a requirement of ABC Melbourne to only work 5 out of 20 days a month and then to split the 5 days over the month.
Laura Tingle named ABC Global Affairs Editor
Laura Tingle, one of Australia’s most respected and accomplished journalists and commentators, is taking up a posting as the ABC’s Global Affairs Editor.
Global Affairs Editor is a key role in the ABC’s international reporting, contributing expert reporting and in-depth analysis of world events across all platforms and able to be deployed to enhance our coverage on the biggest global stories.
Tingle will work in News’ International team alongside our network of foreign correspondents, the Asia Pacific Newsroom and Foreign Correspondent. ABC NEWS has correspondents in 11 overseas locations and another seven local reporters based around our region under the Pacific Local Journalism Network.
Tingle has been with the ABC since 2018 as Political Editor for nightly current affairs flagship 7.30. Her 40-year career also includes being political editor of The Australian Financial Review and working forThe Australian, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. Her awards include two Walkley Awards for Excellence in Journalism.
Laura Tingle: “I’m exceptionally excited to have the opportunity to use my experience to report back to Australians on the big events around the world that also shape our nation.
“I started my journalistic career at a time when Australia and the world were being challenged and transformed by the forces of deregulation and the freeing up of global trade.
“Forty years on we are in even more uncertain times. It’s so important that the national public broadcaster has Australian eyes on the world putting the significance of major global events into context for local audiences.”
ABC Director, News Justin Stevens: “Laura Tingle is an exceptional journalist with the experience, knowledge and skills to help audiences make sense of the extraordinary times we’re living in.
“International reporting is a cornerstone of the ABC NEWS service. We have an outstanding group of foreign correspondents and technical specialists and Laura will add even more firepower to this busy and productive team.”
Tingle will take up the new post mid-year and ABC NEWS will be advertising for a new 7.30 Political Editor.
The role of global affairs editor has been vacant since incumbent John Lyons was appointed as Americas editor in February this year.
“Posting” but she’ll be Australia based correct?
I’d imagine so, I recall John Lyons on the News Channel most weeks doing live studio stuff. They seemed to send him off when big global stories had been taking place for live reports.
I’d say these two wouldn’t be far off retirement, they are mid 60s.
Tingle told Mediaweek that when she first saw the job advertised she thought to herself: “This has got to be the best job in journalism other than the one I’ve already got”.
Despite boasting a 40-year career in journalism, Tingle said she still needed to apply for the role.
“Everybody’s got to apply for things,” she laughed.
“The job was just one of those things where I just thought not only could I do that, but I really want to do that. Plus, it was time for a change”.
UPDATE 9/5: Tingle told The Guardian Australia’s Amanda Meade a bit more about her application process.
When a job ad for global political editor, replacing John Lyons, hit her inbox, she saw an exciting opportunity. Far from being parachuted by Aunty into a “plum new gig”, as the Australian reported, the political editor for 7.30 faced an interview panel of seven inquisitors from the ABC’s international division.
Iskhandar Razak was hosting the Victorian bulletin again this evening, and I detected a lot of small uncertain pauses when starting his reads between the stories tonight. He seemed a bit wobbly, I thought.
He was throwing his hands around at the end of the bulletin. Not sure why.
Just give me the news without all the weird shit. Not interested in anyone’s bizarre presenting abilities. I really don’t think they need a weather person in Melbourne either.
Isk sometimes does an Auslan sign off.
