These people really are awful.

There’s really no way anyone can defend this kind of behaviour under the ‘Freedom of Speech’ guise. They’re just unhinged extremists that are a nuisance to society.

I can understand where Melanie is coming from,

As working as a female journalist for almost 15 years, I have copped my fair share of abuse.

I remember some point last year. I was reporting for CBS for their US Election Coverage. After finishing my report a man walked up to me and started yelling at me because (from his POV) that I “Worked for a communist network” and I was “Spreading lies”.

It is extremely painful hearing this and I hope that Melanie is OK.

ABC statement on Mark Willacy’s reporting on war crimes allegations

As reported today, the Department of Defence has confirmed there is an active criminal investigation into the conduct of the 2nd Commando Regiment’s November Platoon in Afghanistan in 2012.

Given this investigation, Defence says it cannot release documents and other material about November Platoon to the ABC under Freedom of Information.

Allegations about the conduct of November Platoon were first reported by the ABC’s investigative journalist Mark Willacy in October 2020 (“US marine says Australian special forces soldiers made ‘deliberate decision to break the rules of war”).

Stories about alleged war crimes can be deeply distressing for everyone involved but the conduct of Australian forces, particularly in combat situations, is of crucial concern to all Australians. It’s the role and responsibility of the media to report these matters of vital public interest unflinchingly and fairly.

A complaint about the October 2020 story has been received from a member of November Platoon.
