What needs an update is 730. I won’t hold my breath
730 would be on par for needing a refresh along with News Breakfast, that show is a mismatched mess.
I did liked the original remixed ABC News theme when it first launched in 2005 but was modified due to copyright concerns and lasted until the launch of ABC News 24 in July 2010
Is it a remix? Apart from the bit at the opening, it sounds like a different tune altogether.
So funny.
Then and now: The classic ABC TV News Theme is back with a few changes.
Sounds like a decent remix - hopefully there are less trumpet in the headline bed.
Isn’t the trumpet the point?
Gosh that brings back the mems.
Got nothing against the Trumpets - just think that it might be a bit hard to hear the presenters read the headlines with it playing. To be fair, upon hearing it again, the Trumpets are less noticeable than when I first listened to the theme.
Hopefully there are few alternative mixes like the past couple of themes.
Either way, good move by the ABC to bring back the iconic theme - now, if they could bring the Majestic Fanfare remix over to radio.
Not a fan. This is way past it’s use by date.
I hope it’s done just to make it a better looping bed for News Channel usage, and that they have a headlines cut of the music including it, but they seem to have dropped one of my favourite elements of the original theme.
I can’t music words well enough to explain it better, but it’s the short note sequence at around 19/25 seconds into this clip of the original.
Feels kinda empty without it.
That said, this is the right sound of ABC News on television. Majestic Fanfare is radio news - and while I liked the variant of it they’ve occasionally used in promos, this is a much nicer outcome than if they went down that path for TV, which I assume they considered.
I’m sure there will be a number of alternative mixes created like they did with the current theme.
Poll time:
- Better than the current one
- Just as good/bad as the current one
- Worse than the current one
The ABC News Samba
Oh! I’m surprised they’ve somewhat let the cat out of the bag early. During Peter Wall’s interview, he mentioned that a special package was being put together about how this came to be, which I thought would appear on Monday as well.
I will say I had somewhat of an idea on what to expect, given Mr Wall said the “complete remix” with “a lot of energy added” uses,
“the same trumpet player, Dick Montz playing the trumpet”
and adding,
“it’s not that different, its just made for today’s viewers and today’s technology”
when referring to frequency range.
Back in 2016 when the talk of reviving it came about, I was under the impression it was going to be a complete reimagining with entirely a new rendition.
But given the extraction of the 24 individual music tracks, it makes sense they would want to retain the integral elements, like the reverberated piccolo trumpet, which is its most defining feature.
It is a noticeable omition, though it was also a element that was altered over time, as the 1998-2005 variant omits it as well:
And given it needs to work on mediums other than television, it would be nice to get varried versions, like when showing the weather during ad breaks for example.
‘Majestic Fanfare’ on ABC Radio though is being left untouched.
I’m gonna reserve all my judgements till Monday. Given it takes advantage of a high frequency range, I imagine it’ll sound a lot richer on a multi-speaker setups and headphones now than the original.
And I’ll wait till @WAtvVideos makes a cut with all the little elements included
Speaking of Mr Wall’s interview, I highly suggest you all check out the full version on Friday’s ABC Canberra Mornings show, seek to the 1:04:04 mark. He touches on the 2005-2010 theme and other small titbits as well.
Something I did notice through multiple replays with the portion you are referring, was that it sounds like that has been replicated through a technical beep-booping sound effect in both sections.
It’s hard to make out since the audio is played out from David McDonald’s computer speaker setup rather than a direct capture, but I’m sure it’ll sound more apparent in full on Monday.
Will reserve my judgments till I hear it on air and what it’s accompanied with visually,
