Is it entirely within the realms of possibility that as well as the long awaited upgrade to HD, ABC News NSW might also be getting a new set?
Current (or most recent?) NSW set is/was over five years old, but then again why would they upgrade that one before the nearly nine year old news channel set? So many questions!
The presentation of Victoria’s 7pm bulletin or the other programs presented from that set/studio wasn’t really altered that much in the days/weeks immediately before the switch to HD though, right?
Also IIRC, Victoria wasn’t even the first market to get the current generation of 7pm ABC News sets - it was Queensland in 2012, WA in 2013 then Victoria, NSW, SA, Tasmania, NT & ACT (hopefully my memory of the set launch order is about right) all in the space of about eight weeks in February/March 2014.
Of course we don’t really know anything about it yet, but somehow I wouldn’t be overly surprised if this new set is built with a number of programs/bulletins in mind as most are these days.
As for why NSW would’ve been chosen over Victoria, possibly because the latter set will be home to more nationally-screened News & Current Affairs programs? Better to have all the bugs ironed out before shows like News Breakfast, Insiders & Outsiders get their new set.
The now previous ABC News NSW set was launched on February 17, 2014. I’ll have to check if I’ve still got the screencaps from that bulletin, but I definitely remember being up on the Central Coast and flicking over from NBN (who themselves would’ve had a still a fairly new On-Air Presentation package then) just in time to catch the new set!
Personally I’m looking forward to the new ABC News NSW set, especially if we get HD with it. Also because if the ABC’s new set is any good, Nine will probably have no choice but to respond to it (and also the massive beast of a multipurpose set that 10 News First launched in March) with an awesome new look for North Sydney!
At the time, it was quite refreshing to have multiple camera angles every bulletin, compared to before when there’d only be two or three shots per bulletin - a habit that unfortunately seems to have made a comeback in recent months (although if part of that has anything to do with the moving around of set pieces to make way for new stuff, then fair enough I suppose):
