Fran Kelly has now joined Afternoon Briefing from Sydney
What’s with ABC News reporters suddenly using “G’day” during live crosses? Joe O’Brien and Jake Lapham exchanged G’days earlier today and just now Ruby Cornish dropped a G’day at the start of her cross.
Depends on the presenter. I’ve noticed Joe O’Brien do that before. I remember him doing that once before when he had a number of live crosses on the fly. Maybe that’s what he normally does, so when he’s not following a script, he naturally uses it.
I rarely hear “G’day” come out of the mouth of anyone under 40 which is why I was taken aback to hear it come from young reporters like Lapham and Cornish. Perhaps they’re just looking for a greeting other than good morning or good afternoon considering these crosses are sometimes replayed multiple times across the day. I just found it odd and jarring.

I’m under 40 and hear it (and use it) fairly often - not sure it fits on a news channel but could see it used in morning shows etc.

That would make a lot of sense. Plus, it’s shown live in different time zones. It could be afternoon in New South Wales but still morning in Western Australia.

Same here.
I’ve seen Jake Lapham and Ruby Cornish doing live crosses on the 7pm bulletins, pretty sure they reserve their g’days for the morning editions.

G’day is great. It’s an Australian news channel. I say g’day all the time. And also agree with the point it removes a time reference.

Where is Miriam Corowa? Hasn’t been on air in ages.
It’s extremely common and I hear people from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds. Completely normal and appropriate for it to be used on the ABC, especially for the more less structured programming like Mornings.
I’ve seen her presenting the weekly Regional News.
