I must admit… it is frustrating trying to watch the News Channel at the moment. They seem to be focused on the NSW press conference, but are missing other information coming in from around the country. It’s lacking… but at least they have acknowledged the problem.
It’s bad when the best way to get news is not a (formally) respected, publicly funded news channel but either sky news or twitter
Funding cuts fuelled by ideology will do that.
Really think we’re making excuses here. I don’t know how funding is preventing ABC from being able to air more than just one state’s press conference. Local crews would be at each state press conference and would be streaming it back live to be broadcast on social media pages - I have no idea why the News Channel producer can’t then just cut away from the NSW or Victoria presser after the initial comments.
Nothing of substance really happens after case numbers and hospitalisations are announced. Airing an hour of back-and-forths with the NSW press pack isn’t informative. Seems to me that the ABC are using them as a convenient filler. Cut away if there’s something more pressing.
They have stated the reason why… they are currently dealing with staff shortages due to covid.
I also agree with you - but if you’re barebones already, and add covid, something will have to give.
So move control and the studio out of Ultimo to other states to share the load like they did during the NSW lockdown last year.
The NSW centric content on N24 has always been an issue, but it’s about twice as bad during summer as it seems the junior kids get to act up and have even less awareness of the country outside of Sydney than their superiors.
It’s not just ABC Sydney… but it’s affecting ABC newsrooms right around the country.
Kirsten just made a similar statement before throwing to a “best of” episode of The Business
While most of the Q&A is shit viewing, there have been times (especially in NSW) where they’ve further clarified or dropped a new bit of news in answering an early question - I guess they’re trying to cover off that and cutting away when it starts to get in the weeds
Yes but If each city controlled a couple of hours here and there it allows Sydney to concentrate their staff on specific areas of the day, rather than spreading them throughout the day like they seem to be.
For example, you could have Sydney cover morning as they usually do, but then afternoons could be from Brisbane, late afternoon from Melb, evenings from WA/Syd again. Means that Sydney wouldn’t have to provide staff for the whole day and can have more people on when they need them.
I dont understand why they couldnt replay the most recent news broadcast (with an appropriate on-screen indicator that its not live) rather than go to the 1000th repeat of some best of
Isn’t this what BBC News does when it can’t show a live bulletin for whatever reason? Surely it wouldn’t take much to keep at least one bulletin recorded per day for cases like this. In most situations, a few hours old news would be ok if issues are preventing some bulletins from being live.
Quite like that desk concept, better than what they settled on.
It sounds like someone is cutting concrete in the studio today.
A new segment of sorts on the news channel. Joe O’brien will talk to Patricia Karvelas and discuss about what’s happening in politics. The chats will happen on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
What’s happening with Afternoon Briefing?
Greg Jennett is the new host of Afternoon Briefing.
His first bulletin is Monday, January 31.
