Nine did a good job with Hendo in 2009. Disappointing stuff from the ABC.

That’s what i thought; but that’s the info supplied! The program was also marked as a “premiere” and “repeat” so not sure what is going on.

I believe that actually is Peter Harvey.

While it’s good that the ABC will do a look back on the year/decade for New Years Eve, I kind of would’ve preferred the specials to be done by ABC News rather than The Weekly so all of the serious news events (to say there’s been many of these this year/decade is a massive understatement) can be looked back on appropriately.

Of course, it’ll also be very interesting to see what sort of back up plan there is for the ABC’s coverage if Sydney’s NYE fireworks have to be cancelled due to smoke haze (recent news reports seem to suggest that we’re stuck with it for months, probably even the whole of Summer) - a strong possibility with the way things are going at the moment.

Red Cross joins forces with ABC this New Year’s Eve.

2020 is now just around the corner and unfortunately many Australians have faced devasting months of bushfires, droughts and floods.

ABC and the City of Sydney are pleased to announce that we will welcome the new decade in the spirit of love, community and togetherness by partnering with Australian Red Cross on a joint appeal for disaster relief and recovery across the country.

Hosts Zan Rowe and Charlie Pickering will be driving the callout for donations as they host our Party of the Decades concert, live from the Sydney Opera House, starring some of Australia’s top performers. Soulful singer-songwriter Marlon Williams, the Cruel Seas Tex Perkins, Augie March guitarist, singer-songwriter Glenn Richards, American rapper Aloe Blacc, rock chick Natalie Foster, Jazz bassist Steve Kilby and legendary musician Russell ‘The Real Thing’ Morris are all on board.

They will join previously announced artists, Kate Miller-Heidke, Phil Jamieson, Vika and Linda Bull, Angie Hart, Mojo Juju, Adrian Eagle and Casey Donovan as they perform the memorable songs from recent decades. From the rock-n ’roll classics of the 60s, to the high tempo disco hits of the 70s and present-day classics – the hits will keep coming.

But before they rock the main stage, families can enjoy the New Year’s Eve House Party with music, games and dancing! Hosted by Susie Youssef and Nazeem Hussain and featuring performances from Baker Boy, Regurgitator and Shonen Knife, this New Year’s Eve show will have everything you need to get the party started from the comfort of your own home. Expect celebrity appearances, some of your favourite ABC Kids and ABC Me stars and a countdown that will travel the country before the fireworks light up the sky in celebration at 9pm.

Funds raised on the night will enable Red Cross to continue its important disaster relief and recovery work, giving people the support they need in emergencies, including the bushfires and disasters yet to come. The Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund currently includes recovery programs, practical support and emergency grants in communities affected by the recent bushfires.

Donations can be made via the Red Cross,

Online at: nye.sydney/donate
Or by calling: 1800 733 276

The live concert will be broadcast to Australia via ABC TV, iview, ABC Radio and to the world via ABC Australia and ABC Online.

The 9PM Fireworks could be postponed until 10.30PM if the winds are too strong from what I heard. However it could be held earlier than the above time.

ABC needs some contingency plans if this happens but it should go off without a hitch.

I heard on BOM that gusty, cool southerly winds will blow into Sydney on NYE night. If the winds are too strong during the night, it is likely that family fireworks may be cancelled.

Fireworks will only be postponed if there’s 90km/h winds on the night. What exactly happened in 2002.

Something they are terrible at doing on NYE coverage. The broadcast was severely delayed last year too. Fireworks didn’t start on my TV until 12:03 atleast.

The only thing I seem to enjoy is the concert. However I’m working over New Years so I’ll miss out thankfully.

Who could forget their first ever broadcast?!?

It was an absolute train-wreck with Twitter flooded with complaints that night when they took over from Nine. Hosts Lawrence Mooney and Stephanie Brantz looked drunk on air. Nothing went right at all but the coverage has improved over the last two years.

Also, their 2014, 2015, and 2016 coverages were given a fair bit of critcism. In 2016 the hosts almost missed the countdown while they were chatting with Hoodoo Gurus on stage prior to the Midnight Fireworks.

Last year was the same thing. They wouldn’t shut up.

ABC needs to cater their coverage to all, not the quirky yet confusing audience they currently cater to with their programming. No one wants to see kids programming past 6:00pm.

And although I’m sure this will never happen, wouldn’t it be great if the ABC had New Years Eve coverage with a truly national feel rather than a show which only focuses on in Sydney?!

Granted that simultaneously covering the displays all four capitals which follow the AEDST timezone would be a logistical nightmare (unless you were to do something like playing the Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra & Hobart displays in a split screen format), but at least give the states/territories who follow their own timezones some relevant live coverage rather than a delayed telecast from Sydney!

And expensive. Why would anyone choose to watch Fireworks in Canberra when you can watch one of the biggest displays in the world in Sydney?

Why would anyone choose to watch fireworks - an event made for outdoor viewing plus the accompanying sounds etc - on TV?

Except maybe kids and their parents in the lead up to the family fireworks.

They suck on TV.

They don’t look the same on TV at all.
