I think it will do very well for ABC (despite having been on BBC First last year), though I thought it might have been shown on Sundays.

In My Blood It Runs

image

Sunday 5 July at 9.30pm

The critically-acclaimed documentary In My Blood It Runs screens in July on ABC and ABC iview.

This heart-warming observational documentary about history, learning, love and resistance premieres on Sunday, July 5, 9.30pm on ABC and ABC iview.

Told through the eyes of charismatic 10-year-old Arrernte/Garrwa boy Dujuan and his family, the film charts the challenges Dujuan faces both in his school and on the streets of Alice Springs.

In his community Dujuan is recognised as a child-healer and a hunter. He speaks three languages, yet despite his depth of wisdom and intelligence, Dujuan is failing in school and facing increasing scrutiny from welfare and the police. As he travels perilously close to incarceration, his family fight to give him a strong Arrente education alongside his western education. We walk with him as he grapples with these pressures, shares his truths and somewhere in-between finds space to dream, imagine and hope for his future.

In My Blood It Runs reveals the complexities First Nations communities face negotiating colonisation whilst maintaining their cultural identities and practices through self-determination, the revitalisation of languages and connection to Country. It is a deeply moving insight into a side of Australia rarely depicted on screen.

Directed by Maya Newell. Produced by Sophie Hyde, Rachel Naninaaq Edwardson, Larissa Behrendt, Maya Newell. Collaborating Directors: Dujuan Hoosan, Carol Turner, Megan Hoosman, James Mawson, Margaret Anderson, Jimmy Mawson. Associate Producer, Lisa Sherrard and Alex Kelly. Executive Producer/Senior Traditional Owner of Alice Springs, Felicity Hayes. Advisors, Margaret Kemarre Turner, Mrs Abbott Perrule, William Tilmouth, Ameila Turner and Jane Vadiveloo with partner organisations Children’s Ground and Akeyuelrre Healing Centre Production company, Closer Productions. In My Blood It Runs was developed and funded via GoodPitch Australia through Documentary Australia Foundation, and received principal production investment and development funding from Screen Australia. Financed with support from the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program, Screen Territory and South Australian Film Corporation.

Romper Stomper will probably get pulled now.

Interesting choice of having Australian films back on the ABC. Is this the first time Muriel’s Wedding has aired on the ABC (and ad free)?

I think so.

Muriel’s Wedding had it’s Australian FTA premiere on Nine way back on September 21, 1997. The network had the rights to the movie for at least a decade (I seem to recall Nine airing it as recently as 2006), possibly longer.

It was shown multiple time last year across 10’s channels.

Vera - Season 9

image

From Sunday 12 July at 8.30pm

Following the huge success of series eight, award winning actress, Brenda Blethyn dons her infamous mac and hat to play the unorthodox but brilliantly perceptive Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope, in four chilling feature length episodes set against the backdrop of the North East.

In the first new episode, entitled Blind Spotwritten by Paul Logue, Brenda is joined by a strong ensemble cast which includes Peter Davison (Toast of London, Doctor Who), James Atherton (Coronation Street, Porters),Jodie McNee (Britannia, Little Boy Blue) and Adrian Lukis (Collateral, The Crown).

Bright and ambitious,Joanne Caswell is a newly qualified HMP forensic psychologist working in Newcastle. When her body is found dumped at a landfill site far from home, Vera alights on the fact that Joanne had been looking into the crime of a former patient who recently committed suicide. Vera must follow the trail Joanne has left behind to uncover who might have had a motive to kill her.

Kenny Doughty returns as Detective Sergeant Aiden Healy, who over the years has proved himself to be a strong and reliable partner to DCI Stanhope. Completing Vera’s team is Jon Morrison who plays DC Kenny Lockhart, Riley Jones who plays DC Mark Edwards and lbinaboJack who plays Vera’s newest recruit, DC Jacqueline Williams, who transferred from the Fraud Squad in series eight. Paul Kaye (Game of Thrones, Three Girls) joins this new series as Pathologist Dr.Malcolm Donahue.

Other actors appearing across the four feature length episodes include Dean Fagan (Coronation Street, Homefront), Mark Addy (Game of Thrones), Patrick Baladi (No Offence, Stella), Elizabeth Berrington (Vanity Fair, Little Boy Blue), RobertJames Collier (Downton Abbey, The Level), Natalie Gumede (Jekyll & Hyde, Coronation Street), Daniel Ryan (Innocent, Mount Pleasant), Steve Evets (Girlfriends, Bancroft), Mark Wingett(The Bill), Claire Higgins (The Worst Witch, The Syndicate) and Ian Eddington (Doctors, Coronation Street).

The four self-contained crime stories have once again been inspired by the bestselling novels and characters created by acclaimed crime writer Ann Cleeves, who received the Diamond Dagger Award at the Crime Writer’s Association in 2017 for a lifetime achievement for sustained excellence.

moved to more appropriate thread

It’s good to see the ABC airing movies again, the only network to have aired zero for a long time now, around 2011 or 2012 (prior to they used to air lots). The oldest recording on my DVR is “Raging Bull” on ABC 2 with the old yellow logo from 2011.

The one’s they’re airing over successive Sundays “Muriel’s Wedding” (last week), “Mao’s Last Dancer” and “Bran Nue Dae” are all licenced by Roadshow, who Nine have had a very long relationship with.

Maybe ABC were able to get rights to some titles on the condition it was just one run and then revert to Nine, also being a public broadcaster might’ve helped. I think TVT reported it was due to coronavirus impacting programming.
As seen with 10 in recent years, got rights to some Roadshow movies, then after airing a few times they ended up back on Nine.

Nine still appear to have the first look / first run with them though.

Though ABC ME had some movies over the Easter weekend, according to the guides.

Shaun Micallef’s On The Sauce

image

From Tuesday 21 July at 8:30pm

image

ABC and Screen Australia are pleased to announce the eagerly awaited Shaun Micallef’s On The Sauce , a 3-part documentary series about Australia’s drinking culture, premieres Tuesday 21 July at 8:30pm on ABC and iview.

There are many facets to Shaun Micallef – comedian, actor, writer, hugely popular TV presenter. Perhaps less known, he’s also a dedicated teetotaller. So, when his sons hit drinking age, it got him thinking. What kind of drinking scene are they about to dive into?

Revealing a rarely seen personal side, Shaun shares all sorts of intimate stories, from his self-combusting grandfather to the reason he chose to stop drinking. He meets a variety of everyday Australians, from those who love to drink to those who’ve sworn off it. Along the way, he’s joined by experts who share some eye-opening facts about the “demon drink”.

In this thought-provoking series, Shaun attends an all-girl pub crawl, an alcohol-fuelled B&S ball and an 18th birthday celebration, to gain a better understanding of Australia’s long held love affair with booze.

Shaun also catches up with young abstainers and those recovering from addiction, which makes him question whether Aussie attitudes to alcohol are changing, and how this will impact his own three sons?

Shaun is confronted by the highs and lows of alcohol consumption and witnesses the changing shape of our national pastime. Where are we heading as a nation? And how does Shaun feel after getting drunk for the first time in three decades?

Production Credit: A CJZ production for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Principal production investment from the ABC in association with Screen Australia. Created by Shaun Micallef. Series Director Tony Jackson. Written by Shaun Micallef and Anthony Griffis. Executive Producers Shaun Micallef, Paula Bycroft, Andrew Farrell and Michael Cordell. Grand Designs Revisited

From Sunday 19 July at 7:40pm

Strathaven, Scotland

Kevin McCloud returns to Strathaven in Scotland, to meet flying Instructor Colin MacKinnon and his partner, hovercraft instructor and trapeze enthusiast Marta Briongos. They are part of the very select few who can claim to own their own airfield. In fact, their love of flying is so great they decided to live on the airfield too. Their ambitious plan was to build an incredible metal sculptural home inspired by aircraft hangars right next to the runway.

But the difficulties of building their elegant design soon became apparent – bespoke metal homes are hardly the norm in Scotland and finding people to do the work proved tricky. Then with the project barely off the ground they had to contend with violent rain, snow, and the worst storms for a hundred years. With work slowing to a snail’s pace, what was supposed to be a year-long project stretched into its third year. When the money eventually ran out, Colin and Marta were forced to down tools before they could move in.

Six years on however, with Colin and Marta now in residence, Kevin is finally able to see the finished house in all its metallic glory and discover if their magnificent structure has transformed their lives in the way they’d hoped.

Written and Presented by Kevin McCloud. Series Producer, John Lonsdale. Director: Alex Steinitz. Executive Producer, Cal Turner. A Boundless West production.
