In an excellent example of talk radio craft skills, ABC Sydney morning presenter Cassie McCullagh took what could have been a small dull topic and transformed it into two days of an engaging story arc.

Yesterday she introduced the topic of cars and trucks keeping their engines running while parked.

In a similar example earlier in the day on the same station, breakfast hosts Robbie Buck and Wendy Harmer tapped into the zeitgeist of the flooded city of Sydney to talk to an expert in cleaning mould from clothes and houses.

I reckon there will be something somewhere for any disciplinary action, however while I initially thought it sounds like someone drunk or on something, I think there can be some medical conditions which can lead to episodes like this. Diabetes can I believe and mental health etc… So, hopefully the person is alright.

Does Adelaide take the national bulletins at that time of night? Surely it would be on 30 mins delay if so.

Hang about, audio has surfaced.

He doesn’t sound well at all there.

He really doesn’t sound well. Under a lot of stress there. Why they let the two fuck offs through to air is beyond me - did he or a panel op slip at those moments?

Not at all, knowing a few diabetics, sounds like a hypoglycemic episode. Not helpful to speculate.

Begs the question as to how it got to air in Adelaide or do they do live bulletins for CST?

That’s true too. Although some people can’t tell the difference between a hypo or a breakdown, as I’ve found out.

Believe it’s live for CST/CDT but broadcast from Sydney.

Wouldn’t surprise me if there’s no delay for the news bulletins (or any program that doesn’t take talkback callers, for that matter).

Panel ops? Not for the news.

He definitely didn’t sound okay at all. Good that someone at radio MCR paid attention and switched to RN’s or Radio Australia’s bulletin.

hearing the audio just now I feel sorry for the guy, this isn’t just some casual swearing accidentally getting caught on mic, there appears to be something wrong like he may be distressed or unwell or something. I hope he is getting looked after.

Awful incident, never nice to hear that. It takes me back to the Mark Esterhuysen episode in South Africa about 10 years ago. Although his rant was calculated and a swipe at his bosses.

Good thing that it seems like the ABC are concerned for his welfare rather than just sacking him.

Indeed, could have easily been a panic attack, or any such thing. Good to see welfare concerns are paramount these days. Hope he’s ok.

Article from News.com.au mentions that he’s been working in journalism and presenting for 35 years. Hope he’s okay.

It was 10pm on a Saturday, and the presenter was apparently very experienced. Wouldn’t be surprised if everyone behind the scenes was a bit taken aback by the situation and didn’t react immediately.

Yeah, he’s been with Nine, Seven and now the ABC for a while and is quite experienced. I’m hoping he’s alright, it definitely didn’t sound good.
