It’s fascinating to me that in 2026 they are choosing to re-emphasise the AM frequency. I always assumed the decision to go to “ABC Radio Melbourne” was to make it sound more like something you can listen to on the internet. Now they are winding that back! I would love to know the thinking. It gives me heart that my beloved AM band is apparently not going anywhere anytime soon. It’s really remarkable how resilient it is, a technology that just refuses to die
How’s 720 Perth going then?
True, but as I’ve learned on here they had the room on the FM spectrum to move over where we don’t in most of the other capitals. The way some people talk you’d think all analogue radio and especially AM is on deaths door and everything’s just going to be streaming & internet within 30 business days, but that doesn’t seem to be the case
Is it just me that’s noticed not only have they added the frequency, but they’ve also replaced the letters ABC with the wavelength symbol?
My understanding is that the person who often fills in for Macca, Warwick(?) Long is a much better option and at the public broadcaster already
Are they looking at switching the other cities over?
Unless you’re in Perth ![]()
Angela Catterns, who did a great job a few weeks ago, is also another option.
Warwick Long already has his own daily show as host of the Victorian Country Hour.
Andrew Dado on radio tonight covering well for Renea
He must live nearby I wish they had him on more.
Warwick was more insufferable than Macca imho…
Always liked Angela Catterns when I once tuned into 2UE on a remote SDR and she always was very enjoyable to listen to..
That’s just his style, the commercials don’t offer any prospective into regional life the way Macca does. He also brings a conservative balance which is often missed by critics of the ABC and is probably the only reason they’ve never gotten rid of the program.
The reason why I didn’t want a bar of listening to Denis Walter on 3AW nights was that it became too topical, became too political especially with that segment “What’s in Tony’s (Tony Tardio) head” and had nothing sort of the hijinks that came with unscripted and a purely talkback program that Nightline was.
I’ve never voted for a right leaning political party in my life though I still think that in order to ensure the ABC stays balanced that you need Macca. He’s not a hardliner who often gets the attention of either management or the regulators but rather someone who reminisces and often resonates with his callers… that’s if hes interested in what they’re talking about of course ![]()
Have you tried listening to 3LO on DAB+….
I can hardly receive it half the time, and there’s only a few walls between me and the transmitter…
Considering half their programs aren’t rating well, they might as well revamp their entire local schedule and convert to FM at the same time (there’s gotta be at least a single VHF frequency left in Melbourne even if you rejig the community stations around)
Just over $25,000 was raised for Our Village by the end of today’s ABC Melbourne breakfast, which included Sharnelle Vella’s baby shower. Sharnelle’s husband Nicholas Koutrigaros was also in the studio, but only spoke a few words with her and co-host Bob Murphy.
There should be some photos and videos on ABC Melbourne’s social media pages later today.
The donation campaign continues all day today.
Along with the logo change, sounds like they have reverted the station name on-air dropping “Radio”. So back to just “774 ABC Melbourne” which was the previous on-air identity.
A dozen videos from Sharnelle’s baby shower broadcast are now available on ABC Melbourne’s FB page.
Update 5/3: $34,000 was raised for Our Village by the end of Wednesday.
Some amendments to the Saturday Morning line-up in Brisbane, according to the schedule and website program pages.
Saturday Breakfast from 5am until 9am now with Mel Bampton.
Saturday Mornings from 9am until 12pm now with Sally Rope.
We’re still navigating a major outage but Mel James is back with our Brekkie show this morning until 9am!
Tune in on 97.3
Our ABC colleagues in Bega will be bringing your local news and other programs will return as soon as possible.
Thanks for your patience
