ABC Local Radio

Seems that way, but it hasn’t really been Saturday AM or even live for some time has it?

It was reported it came from the MD

They usually dropped it over summer, however I think they have now either axed it, or are going to keep it as a podcast, as ABC Adelaide now starts it’s talkback gardening show at 8am, instead of the traditional 9am start.

It’s been axed - this week’s ABC Melbourne newsletter briefly touched upon what will replace it for Melbourne listeners:

Beginning this week, Victorian audiences can also look forward to more local news and local stories on Saturday mornings from 8am. The extra 30 minutes of local content will feature news and interviews with local reporters, political journalists and commentators about the key issues in Victoria.

Are they still doing it as a podcast?

I don’t disagree to be honest. Always found it a bit of a road block on a Saturday morning. Especially when pre recorded.
You’d hope the have the capacity to do a special show for breaking news or an election or something.

They have done special editions of AM on Sundays, presumably if there is an election or major national event they can do a special Saturday edition.

Wonder if weekday AM could be shunted to podcast and RN only to make way for more local content.

ABC Radio Darwin has announced starting next week they will be taking Overnight programming live (similar to what’s occurring in South Australia).

A comment below explains the arrangement. Following Overnights finishing, there will be a Conversations replay, followed by a portion of the WA Early Mornings program with Ivo Da Silva, before the Breakfast programs commence.

Similar to SA, it will be NT will start getting hourly news bulletins at the bottom of the clock from 7.30pm onwards overnight.

Very happy to let you know that from next week Evenings and Nightlife will indeed be live! During the 1 hour delay between SA and NT we get the second two hours of the program live so you will be able to engage, text in, and call into the show in real time with the SA audience. We do lose the first hour of the show, but it can be streamed in it’s entirety via the listen app. When the timezones re-align in the latter half of the year, the NT will get the full 3 hours of the Evenings program. For Nightlife, the full program will be live all year.

Yes, they’ve been certainly plugging that about SA over the last couple of weeks and over the past week for NT on the Nightlife and Overnights programs. It is good though that it is now live for the whole country with so many talkback topics and the quizzes.

Not sure if it has been mentioned previously but Tim Webster the former Ten newsreader has been filling in on Overnights on the weekends for a few months. I haven’t minded his show although he’s quite active on the Facebook ABC Overnights group and I think he might get in trouble occasionally for having a bit too much music or having the music a bit too much for early mornings! Would be a tough shift to do - you have everything from the shift workers using the radio to stay awake to the insomniacs hoping to get a bit of sleep!

Also listened to the Summer Australia All Over this morning and it’s someone different this year. Nic Healey, although it’s his last week with Macca back next week which is a shame. It’s so much easier listening with others and you get different callers and different topics and even more emotional type calls too which Nic handles much better than Macca would be able to. Ah well, back to dreading Sunday morning radio again until next Summer.

In SA, as mentioned before, they will be taking Nightlife on a 30-minute delay still (epg still lists 10pm start), but they will miss the final 30-minutes of the program for the start of Overnights. At 5:30am Adelaide’s Breakfast program will have a statewide half-hour, before normal morning lineup. On Saturdays, the gap will be filled by a best of the country hour program.

One of the advantages of having an SA only hour for now is that they will be able to continue the weather segment at the start, which is where they list the weather forecast for every major town in SA (A tradition started by Peter Goers). Appears to be a popular segment, and even had a song about it (which was performed at Peter’s last show). Whether they include NT or drop the segment when they take the full 3 hours waits to be seen.

I actually believe they’ll be taking Nightlife live, and missing the first 35 minutes of the program at the start (ie. Coming into the program at 10.35pm Sydney time), rather than putting it on delay.

Fair enough, guess I’ll have to listen tomorrow to work it out. Makes sense that it would also be live because of the Mighty Challenge quiz, so everyone can now participate.

Yes, that’s correct. They come in at 10pm SA time but miss the first half hour as SA didn’t want to lose half an hour of local programming - that was from the presenter Suzanne Hill on one of the Facebook groups about it.

Sounds like some new stings etc from today. One in part is cheesing me off.

Something like “You’re listening to ABC Melbourne on the ABC listen app, smart speaker and 774AM”.

Absolutely nothing about dab which is how I’ve been listening for the last decade. It’s like they’re hoping it’ll fade into obscurity in favour of the app.

They are using the new stings in the capital city markets, plus some regional centres (Gold Coast, Launceston, etc), while others retain the old stings.

In addition to taking Nightlife and Overnights live, SA and NT are now taking weekend evening programming live (including national Friday evenings), meaning that they will get the full Nightlife program live. Sirine Demachkie and Christine Anu are also back presenting national Friday (Sirine), and Saturday (Christine) evenings.

Also SA Sunday mornings presenter Spence Denny will also be filling for Deb Tribe on Saturday Breakfast in Adelaide until February.

And in Regional SA, the statewide regional drive show has now been reduced by half an hour, meaning that they now get the last half-hour of statewide afternoons.
