Andrew Murdoch joins ABC Mildura Swan Hill Breakfast

The ABC is delighted to welcome Andrew Murdoch as the new presenter of ABC Mildura Swan Hill Breakfast.

Recently relocating to Mildura from Perth, Andrew will hit the airwaves on Monday 8 January 2024.

“I am excited to embrace everything this region has to offer, get to know the people that make it tick and put a spotlight on the issues impacting their lives,” he said.

“If you are celebrating, we want to celebrate with you, if you want to say something, we are here to listen, if you have a story to tell, we want to hear from you.

“Although I grew up in WA, I have a swarm of relatives from Sunraysia and they will keep me on my toes and make sure I don’t mispronounce Ouyen or Bealiba too many times.”

Andrew’s love for local storytelling stems from his upbringing in different regional towns in Western Australia. His family eventually settled in Perth where he studied journalism at Curtin University and obtained a graduate diploma in broadcasting from Edith Cowan University.

He started his media career with a job at the Kalgoorlie Miner newspaper and subsequently worked as a producer across Breakfast, Mornings and Afternoons at Perth Newstalk station 6PR.

Zain Nabi, Editor ABC Mildura Swan Hill and ABC Wimmera, said: “I am thrilled to kick off 2024 with a fresh voice for our region.

“Andrew has already proven to be a valuable addition to the dynamic ABC Mildura Swan Hill team. His infectious energy and relatability will elevate the listening experience and keep our audiences engaged.”

Today Debra Pearce announced she will be finishing up as Breakfast host because she and her family are moving to Melbourne and thanked the audience for joining her for the last four years.

“It’s been an honour to get to know the local communities all across the region,” she said.

“I stepped into the presenter role at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic – it was a real baptism by fire, communicating vital health information and updating audiences on restrictions and lockdowns. It was a privilege to support and reassure the local community through this time.

“Since then, getting on the road for outside broadcasts has been a real highlight. Whether it was travelling to Swan Hill or Balranald, or setting up for a morning in Merbein, Red Cliffs or Wentworth – communities embraced the breakfast team and trusted us with their local news.”

Speaking about Andrew, Deb had this to say: “Working with Andrew these past few weeks has been excellent. He has great ideas and already has a strong sense of what the Mallee-Murray region is all about. He’ll bring a lot of fun to Breakfast.”

Zain thanked Deb for her contribution to ABC Mildura Swan Hill: “I would like to thank Deb for her work. Her charming and comforting self, both on-air and behind the scenes, have left a strong impression on the team and our community.”

They were going to have Laura Turner so that must have fallen through

Very big loss, Laura has new irons in the fire to pursue, or so she told ABC.

Former one-half of Heart 107.3’s Kim & Dave, Kim Napier, will be doing breakfast on ABC Northern Tasmania from Tuesday 16th January. Current breakfast presenter, Belinda King, will move to drive.

So who is then no longer on drive and where are they going?

Kim was filling on on drive most recently, so a straight swap with Belinda. Not sure who pre-dates Kim in the drive slot.

Thanks @AustralianAerial, I’m always baffled why these radioinfo articles don’t contain the basic information of in/out.

Fantastic - always a much better show when Kim does it, just not a fan of Belinda.

From memory before Kim on Drive there was Pia Wiirsu (sp?) who was quite good but there have been a number of changes over the years.

Piia Wirsu - seems to have picked up some work with ABC Listen.

Whats going on at the ABC, these posts didn’t magically appear - Antoinette has been quite vocal about the conflict for weeks now.

Meanwhile, this just seems boneheaded

Lattouf is an idiot.

Antoinette has posted on twitter that she is disappointed by the ABC’s decision, believes she has been terminated unlawfully, and is considering her legal options.

It’s a tricky one. I find her comments to be a very poor take on the matter, but she’s expressed them on her own behalf and not on air or in the capacity of her ABC role (which is certainly not as bad as what we’ve seen on Triple J of late).

At the end of the day though, we are in an environment these days where anything you say or have said can be held against you, that level of accountability should apply equally regardless of whether it’s a left wing or a right wing view.

Reflects poorly on the ABC, either their hiring practices are poor or they knew and thought that it’d be great publicity to try and get away with.

It’s clear that the ABC is enforcing their impartiality requirements on everyone who works there (even contractors) - regardless of her views, I don’t understand how she even gets a start on that basis, her views are reasonably well known on the matter and it’s hard to see how she could meet any impartiality requirements of the role

Reacting to it midway through on the basis of complaints is simply poor form

I do wonder though if the posts were the opposite whether it would be an issue or not

Journalist Antoinette Lattouf says she is considering her legal options after losing her ABC radio role over social media posts about the Israel-Gaza war.

Lattouf has been the subject of strident criticism from News Corp and pro-Israel lobbyists.

The ABC has not confirmed whether the posts were the reason she was dropped.

Just as bad as the Victorian school teachers who clearly support the antics of Hamas, openly brainwashing yet another generation.
Founder of Media Diversity, god give me strength. This person can’t have her cake and eat it too.

ABC Sport to bring Australians closer to action at AO 2024

ABC Sport and the Australian Open are delighted to announce an agreement for audio rights to Australian Open 2024.

The ABC will bring all the highlights from Australia’s premier tennis event to audiences live and ad free via ABC local radio network and ABC listen for the first time since 2015.

The ABC will have a strong roster of commentators with Corbin Middlemas, Matt Clinch, Andrew Moore, Quentin Hull and Ned Hall being joined by John Alexander, Roger Rasheed and Paul McNamee providing play by play commentary of the big matches, with a focus on Australian players across the draw, plus all the big finals.

ABC listen is the best place to hear all the action, where audiences will be able to hear the morning and evening sessions live and uninterrupted each day of the tournament, through a dedicated Australian Open button.

The ABC will support live coverage with content unpacking the action from the competition across its platforms.

“We are delighted to partner with the ABC in an agreement that will allow existing and new fans alike to experience the thrilling action of the Australian Open,” said Tennis Australia’s Chief Commercial Officer Cedric Cornelis.

ABC Head of Audio Ben Latimer said, “The ABC is committed to making our iconic sporting moments accessible to all Australians. I’m delighted we have the opportunity to bring the Australian Open to our audiences live and free on our broadcast and digital platforms.”

The Australian Open will air on ABC local radio and ABC listen from the 14-28 January. Further details including match schedules and commentary teams will be available closer to the event.

Audiences can also catch up on all the latest action from the main draw on abc.net.au/news/sport/tennis.

Matt Clinch revealed the new broadcast deal at the start of Grandstand today. He said that Lauren Bordin would also be part of the ABC’s commentary team.
