Another big loss from ABC radio Perth. Geoff Hutchison was a great radio personality who will be sorely missed.

However the station’s page still has Debra Pearce as breakfast presenter.
Anyway, that’s a significant career move for Laura.

Cricket coverage on local radio tonight going out with bumpers for “ABC Radio and BBC Five Sports Extra”. The omission of Radio from the BBC name aside, never heard of them co-branding the coverage like this.

They did it for the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup at the very least, and I believe for the Women’s Ashes just gone. And they would have for the COVID-affected parts of the Men’s Ashes (when there was a remote joint broadcast by ABC Perth). They do mention they are on the BBC normally anyway, however it’s not a joint broadcast.

BBC 5 Live Sports Extra is the digital sports overflow channel’s name as far as I’m aware.

Changed earlier this year with the broader rebrand to just ‘BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra’.

That name is a bit of a mouthful…. At least in Australia, “ABC Sport” (our DAB equivalent I guess) is much simpler and I think a better one at that.

ABC breaches accuracy rules in Victorian logging stories

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has found the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) breached broadcasting rules by misrepresenting risks associated with the findings of the Office of the Conservation Regulator (OCR) in Victoria during three radio broadcasts in April 2021.

Statements in each of the broadcasts conveyed that the OCR had found logging breaches by VicForests had put Melbourne’s drinking water at risk. The ACMA found that these statements by the ABC did not accurately reflect the OCR’s published statements.

The breaches occurred during broadcasts of ABC NewsRadio Breakfast, ABC Radio Melbourne Mornings and a news update on ABC Radio National.

An ACMA investigation found no evidence that the OCR had found such risks associated with the logging breaches. As a result, the ABC broadcasts breached accuracy requirements and misrepresented the perspective of the OCR in attributing these findings to the regulatory body.

ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin said the facts presented in the ABC’s reports did not meet the standards set out in its own code of practice.

“When we assessed the factual material presented in the ABC news reports we found they did not meet the standards expected of it as a public broadcaster,” Ms O’Loughlin said.

“The assertion that the OCR had found a significant risk to Melbourne’s drinking supply exaggerated the impact and seriousness of the breaches found by the OCR. This could have raised considerable concerns for the ABC’s audiences about such a critical issue as water quality.

“The ABC attributed a perspective to the OCR that was not present in their published findings and in this regard has let down its audience.”

As a result of the ACMA’s finding, the ABC will issue a clarification on its website, circulate the ACMA investigation amongst relevant staff and include the findings in future staff training.

Good to see this mentioned. This was a flagrant error by a few certain people keen to invent a story where it didn’t exist rather than do the right thing as a journalist and dig deeper to what was substantive.

ABC in Victoria has form for this and clearly a culture that continues to be propagated rather than purged as it should be to re-establish respect & trust.

Remember the ABC covering up their own content and discussion of past content in the wake of fatal and widespread Gippsland fires?

Many of Sarah’s ABC colleagues and Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek had paid tribute on social media.

ABC launches end of year Gives appeal

image

The ABC Gives appeal launches today, Thursday 17 November, with the online donation website live and remaining open until New Year’s Eve.

Donations can be made here: ABC Gives

The ABC has a proud track record of supporting communities in times of need and connecting audiences to causes that matter.

Following what has been another difficult year for many, ABC Radio teams across the country are partnering with several charities to support those who need a helping hand in the lead-up to the festive season. And we need your help!

As living costs rise, access to necessities can become out of reach for some parts of our community. Donations – no matter how big or small – will support vulnerable communities and will help us spread some joy during the holiday season.

Listeners can support their local community by donating to their state’s chosen charity. All funds raised will go directly to charity partners in each state and territory.

Charities participating in this year’s appeal are:

  • ACT – Oz Harvest

  • NSW – Oz Harvest

  • VIC – The Smith Family

  • NT – Foodbank

  • SA – Foodbank

  • QLD – Foodbank

  • WA – Foodbank

  • TAS – The Giving Tree Appeal

Off the back of the success of the 2021 ABC Gives campaign, which raised $1.7million, ABC is once again uniting on a ‘Day of Giving’. Six ABC capital city stations and 48 regional bureaux will be presenting dedicated coverage with fundraising taking place on Tuesday November 29, inspiring Australians to give back to organisations making a difference.

ABC Perth and WA will be holding their dedicated ‘Day of Giving’ on November 24 and Tasmania will follow on December 7.

Brighten your community. Donate now!

From ABC:

ABC Hobart Breakfast:

On 24 October presenter Ryk Goddard, when referring to the late mining magnate Lang Hancock, stated that "He wanted to euthanize the whole of the Aboriginal people…”. What Lang Hancock actually said was “The ones that are no good to themselves, can’t accept things, the half-castes and this is where most of the trouble comes, I would dope the water up so that they were sterile and would breed themselves out in future and that would solve the problem.”

The ABC Hobart Breakfast presenter also stated that Gina Rinehart is “still defending that comment” made by her father, Lang Hancock. Mrs Rinehart has never defended her father’s comment and Ryk Goddard’s statement is a breach of the ABC’s editorial standards for accuracy (2.1).
