ABC Radio end-of-year appeals raise $1.5m

Listeners to ABC Radio across Australia have donated more than $1.5 million to charities in the lead-up to Christmas.

For the first time, the ABC has brought all its charity and fundraising events together under one name – ABC Gives – with campaigns running in all states and territories in November and December.

The ABC once again partnered with trusted local charities to support Australians doing it tough in the lead up to the holiday season. All funds raised go directly to chosen charity partners in each state and territory.

The Director of ABC Regional & Local, Judith Whelan, thanked all those who gave generously to the ABC Gives campaign which ran across its network of eight capital city stations and 48 regional bureaux.

“We have run charity fundraisers in most states at this time of year, but this is the first time we have brought them together to give them greater impact – and the results have been stunning. It is wonderful to see such generosity at this time of year and to see the difference it can make for those in the community who need it the most.”

Lifeline Australia Patron and former Chairman, John Brogden, thanked ABC NSW and “all the wonderful listeners” for their support of the charity. “It has given a very real boost to the 4,500 crisis supporters who will be giving up their time with friends and family to support people in crisis this Christmas period.”

Foodbank Victoria CEO, Dave McNamara, said: “To say we are completely overwhelmed is an understatement. Thanks to the generosity of ABC Radio Melbourne listeners, we are able to ensure that more than 650,000 meals are on the tables of vulnerable Victorians this Christmas. In 91 years of operating, this has been one of our most challenging. It is the warmth and support from communities across the state that provides the motivation and financial capability for our team to continue to assist all Victorians.”

Anglicare WA CEO, Mark Glasson, said: “West Australians have always been a generous bunch, but they’ve exceeded all our expectations with their support of ABC WA Gives. Demand is already increasing on our services from people who are on the verge of homelessness. We expect this will only get worse over coming weeks, so the money raised through the WA Gives Appeal will be put to almost immediate use to help people who would otherwise be facing a very bleak Christmas.”

Although the on-air campaigns finished yesterday, donations can still be made through ABC Gives, up until New Year’s Eve.

State and Territory tallies to 9 December 2021 are:

New South Wales . $328,000 raised for Lifeline
Victoria: $334,600 raised for Foodbank
Western Australia : $417,500 raised for Anglicare
South Australia : $55,000 raised for Foodbank
Tasmania : $172,115 raised for ABC Giving Tree
Queensland: $126,000 raised for Meals on Wheels
ACT: $46,000 raised for Lifeline
Northern Territory : $51,000 raised for The Salvation Army

On a per head basis, Queensland and South Australia terribly underperformed.

ACT has more than double the NT population, far more affluent and much bigger audience, yet NT also out performed them in a big way. Shows you the Canberra audience aren’t that generous.

It’s interesting to see the breakdown there and it looks from my quick sums that Tasmania has outperformed all of them per capita with 34c for every Tasmanian raised, NT next with 21c per resident and WA third with 16c per resident.

ABC Radio Adelaide Breakfast presenter Ali Clarke quits the station

That’s big!

This will end her 30 year association with the ABC in various stints. I first saw her as Elle McFeast on Friday late night show Live and Sweaty in the early 1990s.

Not sure there is an obvious replacement for Ali on 891. She is very popular.

Matt will be great, always enjoyed him filling in on 774 breakfast. Hope this will mean he’ll be a standard and regular fill in on other shifts now

We’ve hit rock bottom at the ABC for summer programming?

A far less than enthusiastic Kat Davidson (wife of B105 bfast’s Stav Davidson) on Brisbane bfast today. Seemed subdued, wasn’t the usual breakfast radio feeling.

Content was extremely light on. Four person fatal plane crash barely discussed, Qld’s bungled and delayed covid reopening also light on. No mention of glacial vaccination figures, well behind NSW, ACT, Vic, Tas, SA and NT.

After 9am, program goes national to Cathy Schnitzerling.

It’s the woke folk.

Lot of people for a shift covered by one or two presenters

Yawn. If you bothered to read the article, you’d know Alice, Matt and Lisa are covering a shift each. The rest are regular guests.
