Kweens of the Queer Underground

Stream now

The Queer Underground is a place beyond the flash of Mardi Gras, beyond the pulse of Friday in Taylor Square. It’s a world where labels mean nothing: there are no bears, no lipsticks, no twinks, no femmes - just queerness and acceptance. Three filmmakers shine a light on the heroes and heroines of the queer underground in three, short (10min) films. Stream all on ABC iview.

Three queer stories, three queer filmmakers, three journeys into the queer underground celebrating World Pride 2023.

I Am Kai tells the story of transgender Brother Boy Kai Clancy, as he navigates the traditional roles and his identity within his culture.

Are You Into Labels? digs deeper into the labels that are often used by the queer community to find their tribes and self-identify their sexual interests and asks if they are liberating or limiting.

Lesbians on the Loose celebrates the love story behind a pioneering magazine of the 90s that created a space for Australia’s lesbian community to connect and be seen.

The ABC expands Audio Description service to ABC iview

The ABC is delighted to announce the expansion of audio descriptions to ABC iview, enabling audiences who are blind or have low vision to enjoy their favourite on-demand shows, movies and news in a more inclusive way.

Audio descriptions provide a richer and more immersive experience by offering auditory narrations of visual elements during programming.

With the allocation of dedicated funding in 2020, the ABC launched an audio description service across the broadcast television network. Since then, this commitment has been vital for audiences who are blind or have low vision. In the 2021-22 financial year, the ABC broadcast 1260 hours of unique audio-description content including many premiere events or first-possible releases, across broadcast multi-channels.

Today the audio description service was launched on ABC iview where more than 100 titles (over 1000 hours of audio described content) are available across iOS (iPhone/iPad), Chromecast and Android devices making programs such as Bluey, Fisk, Muster Dogs, Four Corners, Australian Story, The Newsreader and Mystery Road more accessible to more Australians. In the last budget, ongoing money for audio description services was incorporated in the ABC base funding.

The ABC welcomes the bipartisan support that has allowed it to provide and expand audio description services.

“The expansion of audio described content to ABC iview reflects our commitment to delivering world-class content that’s accessible to all Australians,” ABC Managing Director David Anderson said. “Television provides access to a very important aspect of cultural and social life. We are committed to providing inclusive content and services that cater to the diverse needs of our audience, on-demand — ensuring that everyone have access to high-quality ABC content whenever and however they choose.’’

The ABC is proud to partner with a number of community organisations, who are helping raise awareness about AD content on ABC iview within their networks – including Vision Australia, Vision 2020, Guide Dogs Australia, Blind Citizens Australia, Attitude Foundation, Access2Arts, Accessible Arts, Can:Do 4 Kids and Visability.

ABC audio descriptions campaign ambassador Nas Campanella, said that Audio description has been a game changer, enabling her to consume her favourite shows more independently.

“Previously I had to rely on someone to tell me what is happening on screen and hope that someone was free and willing to watch a particular show with me,’’ she said. “The level of detail I received about facial expressions, actions or costumes on screen was dependent on what that person felt I needed to know. It was frustrating. If I watched a show alone and there were sections with no dialogue, I simply missed out on those often important details. It certainly impacted my enjoyment of a show.

“Audio description allows me to have equal access to the same information and finer details as everyone else. And it means I can contribute to those water cooler conversations with family, friends, and colleagues like everyone else.”

According to the latest ABC and SBS Audio Description survey, 95% of people who are blind or have low vision are engaging with video every day or most days. One in three people who are blind or have low vision are engaging with content with audio descriptions.

The first trials of audio-description on the ABC started in 2012. Just 14 hours of content became available. In 2020 the ABC launched its audio description service across the broadcast television network. Today we celebrate the advent of audio-descriptions across ABC iview.

We now have more than 2500 hours of content across linear broadcasting and ABC iview. Wonderful programs like Bluey, Fisk and Mystery Road are now more accessible to everyone.

In the most recent Budget, the Government provided stable funding to the ABC and SBS by introducing 5-year funding terms, to support the independence of the national broadcasters, as well as long-term planning and opportunities for innovation.

Part of the stabilisation of funding included rolling terminating measures into base funding and, as a result, indexed funding for audio description on the ABC and SBS is now ongoing.

This means: AD is here to stay.

What’s more, it is likely to continue expanding on its capabilities.

A family faces a choice no parent wants to make. When your child is desperately ill, who decides what happens next? Heartbreaking drama with Sharon Horgan and Michael Sheen.

Nicci (Sharon Horgan) and Andrew (Michael Sheen) are proud and loving parents to 13 yo Marnie (Niamh Moriarty) and 17 yo Katie (Alison Oliver) - but it hasn’t been easy.

Marnie has a rare form of Congenital Muscular Dystrophy and has been in and out of hospital her whole life. When her doctor, Samantha (Noma Dumezweni), decides it is in her best interests to withdraw care, Marnie’s parents disagree. United in their anger, they prepare to fight the doctors’ decision. However, with Marnie showing no clear signs of recovery, doubt begins to grow: are they doing the right thing?

While Andrew questions whether it might be time to say goodbye, Nicci won’t give up. With their united front cracking, she turns to a religious campaign group for help.

However, to garner support for the court case, they need Nicci to go public with the family’s story. Meanwhile, caught between her parents, Katie seeks solace in her girlfriend, Hannah (Mica Ricketts).

Nicci embarks on the media campaign, and she and Andrew are driven further apart.

The court case is a bruising affair with Samantha savaged on the stand. Hope grows amongst Nicci’s team for their chances of a surprising victory. However, Nicci must confront the damage this is doing to her family, especially when she and Andrew take their turns on the stand.

After hearing all the opinions on Marnie’s best interests, the judge’s verdict arrives. But will their fractured family survive it?

A comedy sitcom based on British comedian Alan Carr’s life in Northampton in the 1980s growing up as the son of a fourth division football manager.

This is more than just a trip down memory lane. It’s a love letter to a time and a town where things weren’t always so inclusive. Told with warmth and wit, it follows Alan’s journey through puberty, adolescence and finally self-discovery.

Against the backdrop of Thatcher’s Britain, Alan experiences sexual awakenings, battles with bullies and navigates the highs and lows of fourth division football. This is a show about school and family, and figuring out who you are when your family are Match of the Day football fanatics – and you’re a little bit Miss Marple.
